Hey all. I gave Canseco bute yesterday and today before trail riding. Yesterday, he seemed OK, pretty cheerful, not too different. But, today he was like a new horse, perky, cheerful, responsive, alert, ready to go for a nice long ride (well, not that long 1-1/2 hr) but no tripping, skipping dropping. The point is, I have to believe the bute definitely helped him and he does have some level of pain but I hate to think that I need to give him bute before every ride. So, I have heard that a few people here have used BL Solution and I wonder what the results were and if it might be better long term. Thanks. Sharon L.

I buy B-L Solution by the gallon. I give it to my foundered horses and to my mare with the bad hocks. It is wonderful...it is an alternative to Bute. One ounce is equivalent to 1 gram of Bute. It will not trash the liver and the kidneys like Bute used long term may. You can overdose it with no ill effects. I usually start them out at two ounces a day...one in the a.m. feeding and one in the p.m. feeding. Then one ounce a day for maintenance. If you are planning a ride or an event, give them two ounces that morning instead of the one.
It has also been shown to have some anti-inflammatory properties along with pain relief. It is a combination of two natural substances, devil's claw and yucca. You cannot however give it to pregnant mares.
Cheapest place to get the liquid is CountrySupply.com for 41.91 a gallon. I have just now located a website that sells it in powder form even cheaper so am thinking of trying that next time. They also sell it in pelleted form.
Best discovery since Bute!

I've also used BL successfully, and I believe so had Linda York...

I use BL Pellets on my old arthritic gelding. I even tested it. Took him off of it for a while, and he REALLY went lame! So, he is back on it now. He still limps but is not as painful. It really works!

I have used it on my gelding ever since it first came out...he was born with sesmoiditis which also caused ring bone...he is fine...I thought sure I was going to have a lame horse...but at 15, he's still going strong...
Just remember tho..you CAN'T give it to pregnant mares... :runaway:

Sounds great! Am thinking of daily 1 oz and bute before a long ride. Good plan?? Carol, will you share the website for pellets as the liquid would freeze in our barn come winter. Thanks to all!! Sharon L.

I use the paste, which is probably the expensive way to do it. Thanks to this thread, I just ordered the pellets too! Let's hope the picky little wench eats it!!!!!

Okay putting on my Steward's cap. If you plan on showing, Devils Claw is a forbidden substance. You can use bute at least 12 hours before showing but not Devil's Claw.

Shoot, my picky wench eats it without feed! Must not taste bad at all.
