Is anyone familiar with the bloodline/colors/any info concerning a mare named Gahisa or her sire Tolu. I have a colt born this spring and is shedding his baby coat. I expected a dark chestnut with sabino markings but he is looking very roan now. If anyone can help it would be appreciated. :-?

I am not familiar with the blood lines, but here is a handy site about color that might help you.

Well, She was a bay mare born in '57, imported by Meridian Meadows(que tal horses), but I've always wanted to know who Tolu was, too, as there was another mare by him, Faborita, but she was grey...she had a good fino son Cese Figueroa bred, by Toledo, Faborito Royal...and I think Gahisa had the mare Phyllis Guadreau owned, Culebra, by Relicario, no? Had a really successful showmare named Valkris Fantasia out of her....both were bays, so I dont think its a case of the color changing after the horses were registered(as grays often do!)
But, as far as roans are concerned, the 2 que tal mares I recall are Lisana and her mom, Lisana de Vargas(Lisana being by Hilachas, and multi-fino champion producer-pic of her in Dave Jones' book), who had alot of white as well as being roan/almost sabino looking....Dos Fierros, dam of Embello que tal(now, THAT was a super versatility/reining horse! by Belmonte/Resorte III)and Mora Azul, dam of Fiogon Que Tal (national champion in pleasure, ridden SIDESADDLE)...who was a blue roan..and his sister, Enviadora, who a friend of mine used to own, a good producer....Oh, and Morita was an imported blue roan mare, too....
In judging how/where in the APF studbook some of these mares are located, I'd say at least SOME came from the same farm is Hilachas, as MM bought at least 20 mares from them. (Eusubio Vargas, name of owner)

I'm curious what are the coat colors of the parents of the foal?

His Dam is Moongoddess Mako, she is light palomino,I did notice a lot of white hairs in her coat since I actually looked for them. I just never considered that she could be roan. His sire is Alejandro de Vez, a dark liver chestnut. If I can figure out how to post a pic this weekend, I will. Thanks so much for all the info!! That part of my mares pedigree has always been a mystery to me.

But MoonGoddess is registered as a cremello. Whether she's that, or a light palomino, depends on her eye color. If her eyes are blue, she's cremello, if they're brown, she's very light palomino. My bet is that she's cremello, and that yes, much of the hair in her coat will appear white. Roans always have much darker heads than bodies.(their true bodycolor)

Her eyes are dark amber, she is palomino, but, her legs are getting dark now and the whole bottom of her tail is black, and there are a good percentage of her mane hairs that are black now too, her color changes a little darker each year.

Blaze on a hot day, his white hairs don't show up in this pic, I will take some where they can be seen. He is almost 2 1/2 months in these pics.

Its probably rabincano markings, that's not really a TRUE roan, but white hairs, especially thru the flanks, belly, rear....I have a dark brown mare with rabincano, but from her PR lines. I guess I'll have to try to take a picture of her, it shows pretty well on her darker color.....

I think I have to agree, Stella. I think it may be from Coral LaCe as I have seen a lot of rabicano spots above the tail on more than a few of his offspring and his grandbabies. I think mine just may have more than his fair share. It is coming in under his throat, flank area and at the base of his mane with white hair but much more sparce all over his coat.

That's interesting - since Marci is a Coral g-grand-daughter and has the flecks in her flanks - shich increases each year. I thought it would have been from her sire, who was born black, turned grey.....

No marci, it wouldnt be from having a grey in her background, but with the Coral- I rode him once bareback, I dont recall him having rabincano ticking, but it used to be quite prevalent in PR horses, more than Cols, and since Coral was bred mostly to PR mares, or 3/4PR mares, its likely coming from the female lines. (hey barb p, help us out here!)
