I have two vets I absolutly love. One I don't use as much as the other due to distance and in-abilty to get his associates to travel this far in an emergency. However he was instrumental in providing nicknames for my horses.

He came out one day for normal maintenance stuff.

When he arrived we first shoved about 15 butts in his face for rabies shots, yelling out names as they were done. This was dogs: Tank, Riley, Goldie, Rambo, Taz, Waldo and a few others. Then came the cat butts: Sasha, Sheena, DC, Bubba, Jinx, Dixie and a few others. Now time for the horses. By this time Waldo had stolen his gloves at least 4 times his fingers & brain ware frozen.

He was not having fun but since we were prepared and friendly (and had check book inhand) he was still able to count the dollars & figured even though he was at a nut house he was making money & we were not total neanderthols. Time for all shots & coggins for horses.

Bless his heart, he had heard us call them by the barn names and thought he was doing ok. Barn names are in parenthesis. The Apps went by fine, Britches Jessie (Jessie), Sheza Classy Brat (Brat), Rock my Britches (Scooter), Then came the Pasos. At this point he was a bit "distracted". He did good with Regalada, at Heilo Caliente he was a bit perplexed. Nieve Dorada was tolearable. Then it came time for "Bandolero de Coral Mako" (who was way smaller then his name). At this point the vets eyes started to glaze over. We becamed worried that he was not really competent as a vet. The last horse was Favorito de Picante. The vet went Hummm. drew blood and left rather quickly.

A few days later his office called to confirm a few things. My horses names seemed a bit odd to the girls in the office....

one horse was named bit$h is jessie (britches jessie)
One was h#ll caliente
one was Salsa Boy (Favorito de Picante),
Some thief horse (Bandolero)
also some Rock & Roll horse (Scooter)

is this a 'nickname' post, or a vet joke post? Sounds more like vet stories.

My vet was here and we were doing WNV, coggins, and health certificates on several of my horses. After about 3 horses, while filling out the papers, he asked, "Is this a mare or a gelding"....at which point I reminded him that HE was the vet, not I!

.....

My vets don't remember ALL my horses, they do remember ONE though...Diablo (no nickname needed!). Rusty confessed to me that whenever I called, they PRAYED it wasn't for Diablo. LOL (he really isn't THAT bad!! But he has tagged Joe twice  ). Anymore I always stop ALL conversation and make them pay attention when we do Diablo.

Hopefully for his sake he remembers to bring a clipboard or a taperecorder next time he visits the nut house .

And I should add a 'name' story.

I acquired a Pug/Spitz cross named "Chubby" when his owners were transfered to Germany. My husband's office-mate is a vet who frequently calls in scripts for my animals for us. He had called one in for Chubby and the pharmacist got quite the chuckle out of filling a script for "Chubby Nudell"...

I got a reminder card in the mail the other day for the dogs shots. Said it was time for Kiley and Whistle to have their vacs.
The vet assistant today also had to have the name spelled. It is WIFFLE, like the wiffle ball. Must be something wrong with the way I say it!

For the sake of simplicity one of my vets actually named three of the horses that were here - if anyone remembers "Mac", "Nabisco", and "Prince"!!!

(For those that don't understand - I believe a few of our BB friends actually have or have known these 3 guys!)

Pete (rescued from Texas in 108 degree weather) was nicknamed for Texas Pete Hot Sauce - when he finally got his papers, he was officially Chucuano's Pistolero Pete - still just 'Pete' to us

Nancy was the nosiest horse I have ever seen - hence 'Nancy Drew' which became Nancy de las Viejas

Katie was born the day after my sister Linda's birthday and shortly after we lost our 13 year old cocker spaniel, Katie. Registered name is Katía Linda de las Viejas

Polaris had a huge star when she was born... Polaris de las Viejas

Emi's '05 colt is still looking for his name, but I think we'll stick with the star thing and go with Scorpio de los Viejos

filly - Arwen's Amulet - her mother is our "Harriet Potter", the inbred wizard mare. She was born under the crescent moon that is on her mother's face, bon our son's birthday, so he had naming rights. He's a Tolkien nut, thus the magical Arwen, but we added the Amulet because our horses are our good luck charms. All the horses in the herd LOVED her.. She was their little treasure.
Arwen loves people and is extremely self assured so she also is very opinionated and when the vet came to check out her lame foot, it was her opinion that he hurt her with the hoof tester once and he wasn't going to do it again. Even crosstied with five pounds of carrots it was about 30 minutes before he was able to get her sedated so he could check it out and do some XRays. At three she's number two boss mare under her mom and over three other alphas and two other mares. One tough girl! She broke five rope halters and numerous leads before we went to doubling them and she didn't do it to go anywhere. She just stood there. She just did it because she could! Maybe her nick name should be Queen KONG????

I suppose the funniest nickname on the place was given to my one-eyed mini mare (she lost an eye as a yearling). My farrier, a crusty, bronc-riding cowboy, calls her "Popeye".

Earl, I've tried the 'alpo' trick with Diablo...doens't work.

What DOES work is riding his greasy little butt daily.

My gelding Burlon lives up to his name which means jester/teaser. He's always looking for a way to entertain himself which usually involves pestering his pasturemates.

For some reason, many people, my husband included, have a hard time with my horse's Spanish name. Seems ridiculous to me since it's very easy to pronounce and it suits Burlon perfectly. Anyhow, when Burlon first arrived, John insisted that we call him Oscar (as in Mayer). John tried, but thankfully the name did not stick.

A few months after Burlon was here, we moved the horses to a farm closer to home. Wouldn't you know it, Bryon, the farm manager, immediately dubbed him Baloney!

My standard poodle Lucky also goes by Fritzi, Fritzi Boy, Gassy Wonder, and the Great Fartzini (my daughter's contribution when she was just 10)!
Lucky, obviously, or should I say unfortunately (hehe), has a very memorable habit!

We had a grade draft mare one time that had the ends of both of her ears missing. Apparently she was foaled early, in a freak spring storm and most of her ears fell off. Her name was Nikita but to this day my husband always refers to her as "Suzie Stubs." She looked like she had little round mouse ears. Nikita was a very good driving and riding mare, but she was rather strange to look at.

...Gassy Wonder, and the Great Fartzini...
...has a very memorable habit!
Around our house, with a contribution like that, the common cry is:
"Speak again! Oh, Great Toothless One!"
or
"Blow me another kiss!"
Not to forget to mention; barking tree spiders, coughing frogs and squeaky wood floors. (we have carpet over concrete) :-?

I have 9 dogs, and each has approximately 4-5 pet names. It always takes forever for newcomers to my home to get them straight. Sometimes I have a hard time remembering their "real" names :) I usually call Mia Lita, "Mi" but this causes confusion if I am not home at feeding time, asking "Has Mi been fed yet"...

Chippewa, our yearling mini colt, has grown such a huge winter coat we've started calling him Buffalo Boy!

One of our kittens is a color point with a huge fuzzy coat - named Cotton Bottom

His two sisters are The Hula girls (china doll and miss monkeyshines) because they talk with their tails.

SloughP has become Loopy because he's such a nut

Classy, our mini mare, has become The Diva because she thinks she's so much better than all the other minis because SHE has BIG friends who can whup their butttts!

Well, lets see...I'm a great one for nick names depending on the mood I'm in or what the horse has done recently.

Zar - Missy, Prissy, Queen Zar
Rosie - Monkey Butt, Sweetheart
Buddy - Mutton Head, Butt head
Diablo - Mr D, D-man, Mr. Whimpy
Santiago - Santi-man, Mr. Smooth
Trooper and Baby are nicknames

KD (dog) - Fuzz butt
Dendra (Chocolate lab) - Cocoa bean, alligator eyes,

Kalia (bengal) - Trouble (I don't think this is a nickname, I think this is her given name in cat)
Yasha (Siamese) - lard butt, tubby
Annie and Hattie (outside cats) have no nicknames but come to their own name.

My ex has a palomino gelding pastured at his house. My son decided that his name was "Fred" since his dad didn't know the horse's name, we just call him "Yellow". Anyway I ran into his owner at a horse expo in Durango and asked her what her horses name was. She told me his name is "Charlie" and laughed when I told her Casey calls him "Fred", like that was such a far stretch from his actual name....

Be careful with those nicknames. Years ago I bought a little QH gelding to train and resell. His name was Mr. Spanish Dun by Dunn Played. Brought him home and put him in a short paddock of single strand electric wire. He got out 4 times the first day! The last time I went to fetch him I said if that horse goes AWOL one more time I’m gonna shoot him. We called him AWOL from then on. Got the horse riding good and he was a honey but no “heat” for what I wanted. Sold him to a family with three little girls for walk/trot classes. This family did not know much about horses, but the Grandpa had managed a QH farm that stood Awol’s sire at stud and Grandpa knew horses. He came to check Awol out before the purchase. He gave his approval for the sale, but he quizzed me plenty as to why I called the horse Awol!!!!!
