Average size of a paso mouth

How about the size of bridles? Monty has a BIG old noggin - full horse size on the last notch!

We use bit guards with a size 5 to pick up the extra 1/4 inch.

I am looking for the "average". If you have a horse that is 4 3/4, another that is 4 1/2, or if you use an "average" sized bit, I want to know. Fill in the poll accordingly. You know like the "average" shoe size of a woman is what 7 1/2, but I'm a size 9?

I'm too lazy to measure the mouths of the pasture ornaments myself. I thought this would be easier.

IMO a lot of pasos have bits that are too small if I figure what my experience has been as the usual way...3 pasos that I had 'came with bits' ranging in size from 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 (with bit guards)...I had my equine dentist measure each of their mouths and she said they should all be using size 5....after I switched to the bigger size they all seemed a lot happier carrying their bits....and there was no 'play' in the bits either...if in doubt, have someone 'measure' their mouths to be sure you have the right fit!

Chinook, Brandy, Bonnie, Lula, Kahlua, Sultan all would measure 4 3/4 but the five with the bit guards is fine and has just a little bit of extra room but not too much. BeeGee and Arwen (not bitted yet) are true 5's and so is SloughP but he is a paso wannabe (FL Cracker). Brilliant will be a 4 3/4 for sure as he has his mom's teacup muzzle. Maybe even 4 1/2 because I remember using 4 3/4 with a bit guard on Brandy and Chinook and they weren't too tight. Adriel will probably be a five. She has a more slender face and head than Arwen but she's gonna be a BIG girl. As a yearling she's all legs like thoroughbred yearlings and she's already at least 13 3.

So far so good, keep voting. I was thinking 4 3/4 to 5 inches was a good size to have as a standard.

It was 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 when I was in PR. Looking at those old bits, I don't think I have one with a mouth that small anymore.
