Aussie-((((HUGS))))) to Little Ashley for me. And Brookie too.
Day two, we wanted to do the beach, but it got overcast and the air had a bit of a chill in it, so we did some shopping and visiting. We drove by a beach for me and happend upon a hang glider about to take off of a cliff above the ocean. The pix don't really show how high up we were b/c I zoomed in on the ocean. lol The boats were HUGE.
It was so neat to cath this guy, he just literally hopped up in the air and caught a current. 8-)

THE QUOLL
Our family all have fluffy throats, pink-tipped noses, spotted coats.
Each night in search of food we creep, but daytime finds us asleep
Across three Australian states we used to roam; now just tasmania is our home.
THE WOMBAT
Big and round with solemn faces, my family lives in bushy places.
We graze on grasses through the day then to hour burrows creep away.
Though we look mild and cuase no fear we bowl you over if you come near.

Are you serious? Do you have any idea to whom you have said this? Try showing horses, judging horses and being on the National BOD. Then we can talk. When you are away from home more weekends out of the year than you are at home, then we will talk. Until then  And poor poor pitiful you having to go to Australia. I just hate it for you.

I AM away from home more weekends than not. I go to these shows too ya know...just cuz I ain't all special like a judge or nuthin. ;-) Before these 5 weeks, I was in Vegas, at Youth Mundial, Extravaganza, and Last Chance, New York, and Spectrum. Miami Summer Fest was somewhere in there. I'm either driving or flying, or entertaining someone in Miami. Or the show is here in Miami.
After my brief rest this weekend...PasoFan is coming to town. I have to drive to Sebring Friday night, Saturday we are going to the beach for a ride...driving to WPB. Then spending Sunday doing Miami Paso Farms.
I guess that doesn't sound too bad hmmmm? But anyway, my point is...I get to spend about one weekend every 6 weeks at my home. So I appreciate it. Two weekends in a row happens about once a blue moon.
Australia was a pleasent get away from the horse world. After Nats...I was about showed out.

Now, you guys might be wondering what kind of food they have Down Under.....well, I didn't get to try too much of it b/c I ended up cooking some home food for my Cuz several nights.
Her first request was Southern Fried Chicken. Finger lickin good. 8-) The Dixie Pride makes the best. Complete w/mashed taters and gravey, and veggies.
Then we made a roast, rice and gravey one night w/fresh corn another night.
And for an encore, I did some fresh Scampie w/Dixie Pride. Yummmmm.
We also served Asparagus. I made some fried okra for an appetizer at Tara's request. She loves the stuff.
One interesting thing I did get to try was Deep Sea Bugs. That is what they are called when they catch them. After they are cooked, they are called something different...but I forgot what that was. Tara will have to remind me.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b385/pasogirlz/DownUnder1101.jpg
These are cooked whole and served cold. You tear off the head much like a crawfish, and then break the tail shell down the middle and remove the meat. It was delish! And reminded me of Lobster. They are often called poor man's lobster.
I did got out to dinner one night w/my pal Jen on Manley Beach. She took me to Ribs and Rumps. I had Kangaroo steaks. I found them tasty and tender. Melt in your mouth. Some say Roo meat has a strong gamey flavor, but mine was quite nice. (Probably raised on a farm, not wild. ;-) )
Some other interesting things I noticed was that the pickles tasted different. Not as strong. And the relish was much different. :-? I tried to make some deviled eggs for the Christening reception and ended up chopping up my own sweet pickles for it. But they turned out great, and everyone ate them up...asking what was in the deviled eggs.

So Friday night, I took a walkabout ;-) and rode the train into Sydney to hang out w/Jen. 8-)
To give you some back ground, 4 years ago when Tara got married, she had her wedding here in the states. She brought her whole wedding party to Vegas for the bachelor/ette parties, and the wedding was held in California where she is originally from. This is where I met Jen...her best Aussie friend. I had heard all about how great she was. How she was quite the horse woman, how beautiful her horses were, and how I would love her. How could I love her? I already hated her.
Well it took all of about 2 seconds after we met...and we were happily yacking our heads off about horses. 8-) Instant pals. I even talked her into coming to Fla before she flew back to Oz...and she did. We TORE UP Miami. 8-) I hated to see her go.
**This was pre-Paso for me btw***
So now that I am all Paso-a-fied....I could not WAIT to introduce Jen to them. I think I yacked my head off the entire time about Pasos. I tried to teach her all I know in our short time together. Gait, Trocha, Puerto Rican vs Colombian horses, bits, Pleasure vs Fino.... Thankfully, she acted interested and ate up the info, DVDs, and magazines. She was really shocked at the way they moved. She could not picture it from a written descriptions. She hated the tail jobs upon first review, but I think the nicer ones grew on her. She really seemed to like the fino horses, but is interested in checking out the largo horses too. I have so much to teach her. :D
On another note... Tara and I are working on getting her here to the states....to learn about Pasos...or maybe to stay even longer. 8-)
Anyway, took the train to see Jen. She took me out for dinner for my Roo steak. And the next morning, we went out to visit her horses.
She has a lovely Anglo Arab named Bugsy Malone. Solid Black...all 16.1 hands of him. He has had some dressage training and won a few blue ribbons already. 8-)
Jen broke her leg a few months ago, and has not ridden him since her accident (w/another horse). So Bugs was very tolerant for me. I have very little english riding training...as you can probably see.

The best part of my whole trip was when Jen and I rented some horses and rode along the cliffs overlooking the ocean. 8-)
The funny thing is...that when Jen rang them, she said she wanted something gentle for her b/c of her leg injury, and something spirited for me. But it sure seemed both our horses were about the same speed....slow.

The birds pictured were all in enclosures at the park we visited but all of these birds we see everyday in our back yards. The cockatoos love to sit on our fences and sharpen their beaks and the rosellas and the lorikeets (the real colorful birds) cluster on our native bush sucking on the bloosms. In australia, we refer to our woodland areas as BUSH or Bushland.
The Deep Sea Bugs are sold in our resturants under the name Balmain Bugs. the are beautiful. A bit more tender than lobster and easier to shell than crab. A real meat bite!

A very special guest...Chris's Nan. She has a had a few mini strokes recently and we didn't think she would make to the the ceremony. But Tara and I were evil and kept asking her and tempting her to be there. I am so thankful she made it. A very special lady indeed.

Monday I had my flight home. But first, Jen took me down town to get some pix, souvineers, and lunch before I left.
The Harbour Bridge.

And this concludes your tour of Oz Land.
Some interesting observations I made....
Although Australia is up to date in technology....they seemed about 20 or 30 years behind in morals and way of life. By that I mean I noticed a lot of stay at home moms, a low divorce rate, a general feeling of family. Lives seemed to move at a slower pace. The air was SO clean and smelled of spring. The flowers were in bloom and each breath reminded me of Gardinias. The water was exteremly pure, and could be drank right out of the faucet w/o tasting like chemicals. Even the milk seemed more pure and less additives used.

The plane ride there was easier than the plane ride back. You are all excited on the way, so not much bothers you. But on the ride back...you are just thinking out tired you are and how you have to go back to work.
