He's a lot better this morning. My husband and I took turns checking on him through the night, and this morning he's really more like his normal self. He followed me around like a puppy during feeding, and then "helped" me muck by grabbing and pulling on the fork at inopportune times, causing everything to go flying. Topped off his morning routine by racing a few times around the pen, stopping periodically to kick up his heels, and now has finally settled down to eat his breakfast. ':D'
After a while, I'll go back down and put his halter on him. Leila was kind enough to call me last night, to sort of walk me through everything that happened and help me try to figure out what went wrong. Talking to her reminded me of something that may or may not be significant. When I first called the vet's office, I got the after-hours answering service, and I had to wait about 15 minutes for the on-call vet to call me back. After I talked to the on-call vet, the first thing I did was put Capri's halter on him (silly me, I thought she'd want to examine him so it would be best if he had his halter on). When I put it on, I could immediately tell it was too tight, which it hadn't been the day before, so I had to take it off and adjust it. I even mentioned to my husband that the halter was suddenly too tight and that I wondered whether he had any swelling around his ears or neck. That was one of the first things that I mentioned to the on-call vet when she arrived -- but she just shook her head like it wasn't anything significant and very quickly gave her opinion that it was West Nile -- which drove everything else out of my brain for a while. I didn't even think about the halter adjustment again until last night . . . but now I'm wondering whether he did have a swelling and it's gone down, in which case I'll have to readjust the halter.
