I had to run up to Deadwood yesterday to get my registrations done for all my vehicles (3 vehicles, 2 trailers, and a camper - OUCH!) Anyway, I had my camera in my car and the fall colors are so pretty up there right now.

I thought some of you who watched the HBO Deadwood series might care to see the real Deadwood as it is today. It's a very pretty little town with lots of the original buildings there from the 1800s.

Looking at Deadwood as you come up over the hill just outside of the town. About the center of the picture is 'Main Street':

Looking up Main Street (the pointy building on the left is the Bullock Hotel - used to be the Bullock Hardware Store):

Thank you so much for the wonderful pics. Kevin and I have got to make a trip to see it all in person!

Wow! I wish I lived out that way. Around here the only thing exciting is who's moving in next door. :-?

What an absolutely gorgeous little town! But, I have to ask ... what keeps it going? It appears to be a small, small town with no industry on the outskirts. Is it very close to a bigger town in which folks work? Is it a retirement town? Or what?

Cool pictures! Thanks for posting these! I almost didn't check this thread. I'll have to remember your lovely pics might be included in future posts.

Deadwood is very small - about 1400 people. It is a tourist town and also a gambling town (no bet limits). It's like an old west min-Las Vegas - slots, poker, blackjack, etc. They have poker tournaments throughout the year. The stars of the HBO deadwood series visit often and play poker with the locals and tourists. Kevin Costner has a casino here as well as a Tatanka visitor center. He's often seen walking around town.

The gambling revenues actually help pay for historic preservation of buildings all over the state (I'm getting ready to apply for a grant myself, for our old hotel building we recently purchased). Since the entire town of Deadwood is on the historic register, it seems fitting....

It's really a fun place to visit. The Saloon #10 is a must-see if you visit Deadwood, Mel! Let me know when you're coming - I live about 15 minutes away.

Jane - it's about 45 minutes from Rapid City, which is about 75,000 people (still a small city, but the largest around here).
