This is my brand new filly!!! She wasn't due for another two weeks at least. In fact Fresca had her in the pasture with the yearling Peruvian colt  as I thought I still had time to move her. She sure didn't feel like she could have a foal yesterday.

Can anyone tell me if this filly's grandmother (Faraona de Potrillos) is gray? Fresca's papers say her mother is bay, but Fresca was still listed as bay when we bought her and she was very gray. I just want to know if her gray is only from her sire, Monarca de Besilu or if she could be homozygous for gray. I would really like it if this filly had a chance of keeping her red color :D

I have your mare's half sister. Clarissa del Cabildo.
Her filly born in July, looks alot like yours. :)

Your filly is very beautiful. I have been told that gray will start out with a very dark/bright colored foal. Your filly is a really dark chestnut. My guess would be she will gray. I did have one born out of a gray mare that was the deepest red shade. She did not gray and really surprised me. I remember Stella seeing her photos and saying she would definately gray because of the deep shade of red. So you can never tell. Look at her eye lashes, do you see any gray in the lashes? Sometimes that will give you a clue. You should know in the next couple of months. The ears is usually the first thing I notice going gray.
Good Luck with your filly.

I know you probably know this, but be careful around the water. At that young age, they will lay down/fall down just about anywhere. They can drown very quickly before you know it. Just a heads up to keep your baby safe.

She is so adorable. What a beautiful color and so striking against her mom. I hope she keeps that color! But if she grays, she'll be beautiful like her mom too!

What a sweet little baby! I love the red color. :D

Now is my turn to throw in a bit of safety advice, and I only offer it out of concern, so please don't be offended. You might want to take the halter off the mare. I have heard that babies can get a leg hung up on thier mom's halter and the results can be disasterous.

If she goes gray it is okay :D but I don't have any just chestnut horses, lol. They are all palominos and cremellos,

I wouldn't have had her near the creek but that sneaky mare popped her out early without showing any signs the day before. We stayed all day and watched her so she was okay.

I don't leave halters on horses usually, but the vet was coming and she was supervised. I promptly removed it after the vet left.

Thanks for all the comments.

Gorgeous pictures! Precious filly! The picture of the mare and foal is darling! Congratulations!

I'd look for grey hairs around the eyes. Sometimes one can find them under the baby coat. I don't know how it is overall, but I've heard that chestnuts grey faster than some other colors. I've noticed it with a few, too. In fact, I've registered one or two chestnuts as a grey before six months of age. One filly already had some dapples! My bays didn't grey nearly as fast! One maybe was three years old or more before he had a grey hair.
