Was at my cattle round-up and you could miss this pair of rocky's, they were almost twins, same snip, same blaze and looked completly alike! They were a mom and daughter.. Go figure.. Beatiful pair..

I talked to Wayne and Jen and told them how much I loved the looks of the Rocky's but never rode one. They insisited I try! Yiipppee!!

After the round up I found them, he said ok take her and see ya later! yep, he was letting me loose w/his horse! My little Kysa rode the other! And away we went down the pasture and around, didnt really go to far but it was soooo nice of him to just let us take them. He said Have fun!

It was very interesting ride, VERY different from my paso, It was rougher for sure. The movements in the shoulders is very animated IMO, my legs were moving alot compared to my paso. I honestly didnt care for it, I really thought I would..

I tried the younger one, it was smoother, but the motion was rough. It is hard to explain, but it was rougher, but smooth? Ahh I cant explain it well..lol

Here are the pics of the horses, no pics of my test ride because no one was around..lol

I have often wondered how the other "lesser" gaited breeds ride. I have a MFT and he sure isn't as smooth as my pasos. My TWH isn't as smooth either.

I have a friend coming the end of October that owns a Rocky. She's looking forward to test riding a paso!

I believe it is the Rockies that now consider a 'atepping pace' an official gait. It is my understanding that a stepping pace is nearly a dead pace broken only by the rear hoof hitting slightly ahead of the front hoof on the same side.

I went on a group trail ride this past weekend and noticed a very pretty black gaited horse in the group. I also noticed that the rider was fairly flying up out of the saddle when the horse did anything faster than a walk. As I didn't recognize the breed, I asked the rider and she told me her horse was a Rocky Mountain Horse. Interesting.

they are very beautiful... love the flaxen manes. The only other gaited horse I've ridden is a MFT - not as smooth as a paso, but a little bigger. I think the larger horses might appeal to taller/larger folks. How tall are these guys?

I rode John's horse, Cruiser, on Saturday (QH). He is the sweetest horse, but I sure felt like I had a workout after riding him for 3 hours. I can ride Listo for 6 hours and not feel tired at all.

I think they were about 15hands maybe a little less. 9yr old mare and 4yr old mare... both were very good, listened very well, just a kiss and they would go!

There are 3 registries for Mountain horses. The RMHA Rocky Mountain has a stricter range of qualities and how high they can break and overreach. The KY Mountain Pleasure Horse has more other gaited breeds thrown in and allow a higher knee action, and also has more color ranges with more white markings.

Many have a more lateral way of going, but ideally should be an even 4 beat gait. They seem to lack flexibility in their necks (as PFs) and breaking at the polls, and often get pulled in with long shanked bits. As in any gaited breed, some are smoother then others.
