I have some questions about headgear that I just purchased today. ( Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, Lori.)

Is this adjusted the right way on my colt? Do ya think the color will clash with the rest of his tack? Is he supposed to sleep with it on?

I thought he was a bit young for braces, too, but his front teeth jut out so much there is a real danger of them being damaged if he gets hit. He also has a lot of crowding and 16 more adult teeth to come in, so the braces will help make more room.

He has to wear the braces and headgear for at least a year. There is also the possibility he will need a second set of braces when he is 12 or so. He only had to wear the headgear for 2 hours today, as it's his first day. He was hollerin' to have it off after only 20 minutes or so, and by the 2nd hour he was freaking out. Eventually, he will have to wear it for 12 hours at a clip.

Yep, we are in for a looooong haul, wish us luck. :(

OMG - what have you done to that child!!! He'll forgive you when he's 20, but not until. He is kinda cute, tho.

u know what would take the place of those things?

A natural whole food diet, free from processed food, seperated foods, refined foods. And plenty of sunshine, vit D supplement helps with that if the climate is too cool for a lot of sun exposure.
Fraid that kind of lifestyle is rare now days though.

Did ya know? when u buy whole wheat flour, or whole wheat bread. what yer getting is not really whole wheat. It's had the germ removed, the bran left and it's called whole wheat. If they left the germ it would go rancid in a few days after it's ground, gets a strong flavour, and would taste really bad after a few weeks. Has to be kept in freezer.
The only way to do the above diet is to own a mill, get whole grain, (usually best to get it in bulk from wholesale suppliers) and grind them and make our own breads as they're needed.

How would that straighten his teeth? Just curious.

Cute Guy!
Both of my kids had to have braces. My boy's front teeth looked like they should belong to a rabbit and had a space between them. My girl had to have a bunch pulled, because she her second teeth came in behind her first....she never had a "hole" in her smile....just two rows of teeth.
It was expensive, but these few thousands of dollars were well worth it....when our regular dentist came out to the waiting room after the braces were removed....and said: " Your son's teeth are perfect. He has a 'movie actor's million dollar smile!"
Just make absolutely sure that he brushes his teeth all the time and keeps the braces VERY, VERY clean....It is VERY important or he'll have dark spots on his teeth once the brackets get removed.
It might be a "pain in the neck", but the end results are well worth it.
And the time goes by pretty fast. Those braces were on and off in no time!

I feel so bad for Garrett. He begged me to have the braces off this morning, they really hurt him. They said he would be sore for 1-4 days after each adjustment and to give him Tylenol for the pain. I gave him some last night, but he said it didn't help. My poor boy. :(

Rueben the problem is caused because dad has a small mouth and small teeth and mom (who has a big mouth ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ) has large teeth. Being the victim of such heredity myself and having to have 8 teeth pulled to make room for the rest I can vouch for the situation. Both mom and dad have perfectly straight teeth but I got dad's smaller mouth and mom's big teeth and they just don't fit. Yes all the great food you espouse is wonderful (and we eat as much of it as we can find) but it isn't going to make big teeth smaller or a small mouth larger.

Are kids allowed to take ibuprofen? Because I would take two an hour before I went to the orthodontist and would have no problems with pain. Suggest that he suck on ice chips (no chewing allowed). This will help also. They'll be off before he knows it but in a kids' time frame it is really hard. It is amazing how much he looks like you!! Lucky kid!

I have had years of orthodonistry both as a child and as an adult, including head gear, bionator, rubber bands, removal of teeth to make room AND maxilofacial surgury to break my lower jaw and lengthen it.
I recall the first 2-3 days after adjustments were difficult and I'd suggest you helping him by giving him softer foods to eat, nothing that requires a lot of chewing. I don't think I ever took ibu or tylenol, I just lived thru it.
I know it isn't fun.

I wore braces for 5 years. Don't know why I didn't have to wear headgear...that would have put the icing on my unpopular cake! :(
They hurt. Yes they do. They chew up the inside of your mouth, they ache after adjustment and mine kept falling off. They pulled 2 of my teeth, and the gaps never filled in, so now some of my teeth are shifting and making more gaps.
It was worth the pain, because I had teeth I could have eaten corn on the cob through a picket fence with. But at the time, they hurt.
