You're not crazy. It happens. I had a bay mare born as red a Capuchino. Beautiful color and as she matured before a year old, the red mane and tail had black roots. Her bay grey daughter did the same. Born very red and before she was a year old, the mane and tail went black.

So, technically she is really bay and is probably shedding out her foal coat.

I would bet chesnut to bay to gray eventually as she looks mighty "brilliant" to me.... looks like a new-born pic there....
Yep, I've had a chestnut looking filly go BAY...the black mane and tail were not apparent at birth..but were in about two months...
