Some very sad news.. Cowboy came in limping from the pasture and had a small wound on his leg that was bleeding. Vet came out and took xrays.. and his leg is broken. Our vet seems optimistic that he will be ok.. with stall rest, antibiotics.. and then more xrays in 3 weeks.. He said nothing was displaced. I think from the information my mom told me that it was a comminuted fracture.. which is described as looking kind of like a shattered windshield.

He is such a sweet little guy.. Sometimes life seems so unfair. Here is a recent pic of him in happier times..

Aw, I am sorry to read this. He looks young, so I bet he heals fast with no complications. My fingers are crossed for him.

Yes, if he is young, he will probably heal with no problem. A client has a Rojo Tejas son that literally cut his tendon in two as a six month old (wire fencing)...after much stall rest and a soft cast...today as a three year old, you would never know he had been hurt. He is a normal active three year old colt!
Just follow to the T what the vet tells you to do! God bless!

Oh...that is hard to read. I pray that he'll heal quickly and completely. You might invest in some stall toys for him, he'll go nuts after a while of confinement.

Poor boy. He looks so sweet too.

How is he doing? Is the leg swelled up...is there a support wrap or cast on it? Is he confined to stall? Standing or sling?

Keep us updated... Hopefully...he will be fine.

I have a neighbor here who's 9 yr. old Paso gelding fractured his sesamoid bone in three places (hirline fractues)...and that horse is FINE now...he was treated with a support wrap and stall rest...

(((hugs))) Thanks for all the prayers, and good thoughts.

We are not sure how it happened. The first thing I asked my mom when she told me it was broken was would he need a cast.. and she said our vet didnt mention one. She had asked if Cowboy would need a support bandage and he said no. One of my dads friends came over and mentioned the sling but I think judging from Cowboys personality.. it wouldnt go over at all.. and he would probably injure his leg worse.

He is confined to his stall. Our vet had said we could put him out in the round pen but I think my mom decided to leave him in his stall for awhile. I told her maybe we could take him out and hand walk him and let him graze a little, if the vet thought he could stay in the roundpen that shouldnt hurt him.

I hope he recovers totally from this. Its encouraging to hear that you all know of horses that have recovered well from injuries like this. My mom and dad were heartbroken at the news. He was such a little active fellow before.. always running full blast.. and prancing around.. so happy.

Listo was in a cast for 6 weeks, then a soft wrap for a week last winter (stalled the whole time). Even at 10 years-old he did not like being stalled. But, he healed perfectly (I did a breed demo with him 1 week after soft wrap was removed - he wow'd the audience with his energy!).

Your boy will be fine! Prayer to him (and you!)
