I was asked to post this:

The Key West Police Dept has a mounted police unit. It is headed up by Lt Alan Newby. Lt Newby has an idea to start a citizens' auxiliary mounted patrol unit (no guns). You would "ride along" with the law enforcement officers and their mounts.

To qualify, you need to attend training. Geiser Equine, in Ocala, has a school that certifies mounted police officers and also auxiliary riders. They told us they didn't plan to schedule a class until March, 2007. But, after sufficient whinning, they said they would schedule a class in December if 10 enrollees could be found.

Class would be three days-Sat, Sun and our choice of either Fri or Mon. Horses can be stabled at the Geiser facility during the training. Cost is $350 for the three day class.

This class would be excellent not just for Mounted Patrol wannabe's, but also ANYONE who takes a horse outside an arena to ride in public-on trails, etc.

If you would like to attend the clinic or join the Key West Mounted Patrol....let us know. 8-)

We need 10 enrollees to schedule this class-already have 3. Also, the class could be held in Miami-Dade-Broward- but then 15 particpants are required
