Anybody here using the 12" Mustad (blackened) hoof nipper? I think I will get a pair so I can trim with one hand.... they are $59.00 here.
Anybody here satisfied with that brand?
Thanks for responses!

UPDATE.... Went and got a pair last Friday...they cut GREAT!
Very nice size... easy to use...
Economically priced....
I also bought my first set of Kerkhardt aluminum shoes...very fancy...actually look like "chrome".... those I bought for ARTWORK!
They are sooooo very light...it won't weigh down a wall hanging like an iron shoe does!
Have you got pictures of those new nippers and shoes, Terry?

Terry, my husband bought me a pair of BudNippers for my birthday, on your recommendation! I haven't tried them yet...it has been too wet and cold. I hope to give them a test run Saturday. I don't know if I have enough strength in my hands to do one handed trims although that would be the optimal way for me, too. I know I can't with the Bud's, but if thos others work out for you I may try them later.

I bought the 12" St. Croix nippers, and I love them! Its worth it to spend a little $ and get some nice tools that cut your work in half...no pun intended. ;-)

Here are my new Mustads next to my old, worn out nippers...
The old nippers have seen better days..the jaws no longer meet. My husband is going to recondition those and give them "new life". The old pair are hand-made customs given to me by a certified farrier friend about five years ago..... I have used the heck out of those and can't wait for them to be reconditioned...

Coooooool pic, T! Thats how my old nippers looked too....I gave them to my friend, who's fiance was supposed to "recondition" them as well. I don't think he did yet, and I keep telling her that it will save her life to use those instead of rasping till the cows come home.

Terry,
those look like a pair of GE nippers. You can send them back to GE to get resharpened. There are also some places that will do that who are a bit cheaper if you call the AFA they are usually advertisers.

They aren't GE nippers..they were custom made here, BUT..thanks for the tip... if my husband doesn't get them done soon...I will consider sending them in... :D
One NEVER has enough pairs of nippers!
Jamie...what kind of rasps are you buying these days? I looked at a really nice rasp over the weekend at a guy's place who had TW horses...
the rasp was wider & had larger teeth than any I had ever seen. It also had a molded blue handle (non-removeable)..and now I cannot recall the name of them...the name was molded into the plastic of the handle...are you familiar with those?

Maybe it was this one?

I haven't purchased rasps in a long time, since I rarely shoe anymore, it's better for me to be on top of the horse rather than under it. When I was shoeing professionally, used Save Edge rasps. They were lighter and seemed to last a bit longer than the Simmons or the Bellota. You can also have them resharpened.

I use Save Edge.....was using Heller Legend's, but they started to have too much "bite" to them, so I switched back to Save Edge.

Darn... I cannot remember the name yet... its not the one Jamie posted, but rather has a rounded, medium blue colored plastic molded handle..very comfy to the palm of the hand... a relatively thin metal, but wide with "darn good bite"..like three or four swipes and you are DONE!

Well that sounds nice! :D
Maybe I'm using the word "bite" wrong...what I mean is that the rasp gets caught/stuck for a second, so you don't end up getting the smooth violin stroke all the way through. Its so annoying...
