Appy... Well, I did it again.... there we were at the PetsMart last evening, picking up some dog food for my Yorkie-Poo Arlo.
There was a "pet fair" in progress.... there were crates full of puppies seized from an out-of state puppy mill. There were Rat Terriers, Aussie Shepherds, Bischon Frise' (sp), Miniature Poodles and low & behold....two Yorkshire Terriers.
Well...I sure didn't come shopping for a dog....but you guessed it...I went home with a seven month old AKC Yorkie...that had been in a crate his entire life. He has never been trimmed, his nails were really long & sharp (I already trimmed the nails) he was filthy dirty, so once I got him in the door...it was to the sink we went.
A short trip to the hair dryer in the bathroom...and a clean dog came forth.
His hair is long and silky.... what is the proper trim for a Yorkie? Is there a website I can go to to see a proper trim? I'm not quite sure how to clip him, I have only ever clipped Poodles, not silky, straight haired dogs...is this a scissor or a clipper job?
One other thing...he has way too many teeth...like double teeth..the permanent teeth coming in right beside the baby teeth.... ( I will get a pic of this). He is very emaciated..you can feel every spinal vertebrae, feel his ribs through his silky hair also. I'm thinking that before he gets these extra teeth pulled...he needs to gain some weight. Before he has to go under anesthesia... He is heartworm free, he has had a rabies shot and the puppy shot series called DHPP... that was on 10/23, right after the seizure of all the pups.
He is a sweet heart, he was acting very sickly and scared last evening. I was up most of the night with him...he was very dehydrated and drank a LOT of water...Today he seems like a new dog. He is trailing after my Yorkie-Poo like they are long lost buddies... (I actually got him FOR Arlo..my Y.P.) So far things seems to be working out real well.
I appreciate any thoughts on clipping & tooth removal. he won't see my vet until this coming week.
PS.... my husband says I watch "too many Animal Cops shows"..oh well.. I have been wanting another itty bitty dog for a year..last night, that dog found me! Now...to come up with a NAME for the little buggar....

I'm not much better! I was thinking "Widget"...but my hubby shot me down on that one...says he needs a more "regal" name....

Big AWWWWW. Can't help on the teeth or hairdo. But the OBVIOUS name would be "Pudding", as in Yorkshire "Pudding". Regal as in British...hmmmm Charles (but I can't stand him), Monty (for Lord Montbatten), lots of Earl's, Duke's, etc., George, Alfred, Harold. Oooh, ohhh, How about some of the "Sirs", like Sir Edmond Hillary, or Sir Paul McCarthy, or Sir Sean Connery, or Bond, James Bond...

Hehehe....That gave me a real chuckle Beth....Thanks! My step son's name is Sean... Or I'd probably go with it! I'm trying for a name that starts with "B", then I'd have an A,B & C dog! Arlo, Cisco & B------?????
BTW Beth...I WILL Get that article up...I've been up with the "dog" and am just really tired today...I did not forget it...just haven't had time...

O.K...you know I HAVE to ask this...WHY? Why do you want another untrained horse? It would be so much cheaper in the long run if you bought an already trained horse. How much training does the gelding need and how close is a trainer to you?
Think about it..think about it!
Surely you can find a trained horse.... bargains in horses are to be QUESTIONED... will he really be a bargain in the end? or will he need months & months of training? At "x" amount of training dollars per month...???
Just a few things to consider..you know I am only thinking of YOU....
;-)
Terry, please read your quote. That is what you told Moniece in her thread, when she was thinking about getting another horse. Now replace the word "horse" with the word "puppy".
There's yer sign!

BOB - yeah, what about Bob? Named a horse Bob once. He had a big long registered arab name, but he did not deserve it, so he was just Bob.

Oh...you couldn't go back and get me an Aussie female puppie could you? I think that will be my next dog.
Nevermind...wait until after Thanksgiving. We're going to PA and I should wait until I get back.
Poor puppy! I'm so glad you have him! He'll have a yard now!

Yorkies and other small breeds are prone to extra teeth. I had one Yorkie in class and the woner said she refused to eat. The next week she said the same thing so I opened the dogs mouth and behold tons of extra teeth. I sent her from class to the vets. A good thing I did, turns out she had an infected gum from all those teeth and had to have emergenct surgery. It took her months to recoop and the owner used to stop me in the store so happy I noticed.
If it is not an emergency (no infection, eat/drinking ok) I suggest waiting until spaying/neutering to have them removed. The less anesthesia the better for dogs.
If the puppy is having a hard time eating soak the food a bit in lukewarm water.
Psst Carol we just had 1 week old puppies.. Newfoundland/Great Pyrs.
I can't give you any advice on the grooming, sorry.
Huge warning, if the puppy has only had 1 set of shots be VERY careful. Until they have had their second they are not immune to catching Parvo or Distemper. You can easily bring it home on your shoes via someone else bringing it into the store on their shoes. Do not take the puppy anywhere until that second set which follows 3-4 weeks later. They should have a total of 3 sets, each 3-4 weeks apart. I give all my own shots so it's much easier (minus Rabies a Vet must do).
As far as gaining weight there is some stuff called Nutristat which is calories in a tube. I have had lots of experience with underweight dogs up to 100 pounds underweight. Between nutristat, Satin Balls and Pet Botanic sausage it really works getting weight back on.
If you have more questions feel free to PM me. (Or ask here)

CarolU...the Aussies were so darn cute...none had been taken while we were there...two were left.
OF COURSE I would get you one...I don't know what sex they were because I didn't pick them up or look at them closely.
Email this lady.... anacurry AT hotmail .com and ask her.... she is heading up the adoption...the adoption papers are short, sweet, and not real demanding.... PM me for her phone...be glad to go pick one up for you...tell her to email you pics.
If you are serious...PM me...I'll go TAKE pics if need be....

Just saw this..it is winter time..I would just use your 10 or 15 blade to clean under the eye corners where they drip..you can let the head grow and rubber band it or go ahead and clip it out of this eyes....crotch clip and under his/her tail and around his feet..
In the summer I like a schnauzer clip on a yorkie
on the second set of teeth you should be able to tell which are the baby teeth..daily take your thumb nail and try to flip them out..if you catch them loose then pluck them..this is common in small breeds...
On Yorkies I like to cream rinse them after the bath leaving some in the coat to make them easier to comb..
and pluck ears like with your poodle..did you get the powder?
I think you should name him Bear.... ;-)

I know diddle about grooming except my Poms need it
This post is the reason I LOVE this forum.
Most of us are the type that will take an animal in, give it a better life then could have ever been hoped for and say: how could I walk away? It (horse, dog, cat, goat) NEEDED me.
We are all (that means most of us) hit by the "thunderbolt" the
"this animal needs me"
God has a place in heaven for us!

He is adorable.....
the pointed baby tooth try to pluck it out with your thumb.

Appy...those teeth are very well attached...not at all loose..and they hurt him to touch them... I will let the vet pull all that are needed...under sedation.
The pup is sickly and weak, but already getting better.
He is so timid from being in a crate and not knowing what to do with "freedom".
He reminds me so of Harpo...a miniature poodle my husband bought me on our second wedding anniversary. Harpo had been in a crate at a puppy mill for his first five months...he acted the same way....baffled by being out ofthe crate...I had Harpo for 18 years...I still miss that dog! ;-)
This new pup won't leave my side, has to be right with me.... I have a crate for him (Arlo's old crate) but he cries and cries if I put him in there at night..so...well....you guessed it...he sleeps on the bed, with us...right next to Arlo!
I might just name this pup Woody, but I also like Braxton...or "Brax" from the site Beth sent me too..we are still deciding...I do Like Pippin Too Mona!!
Thanks everybody...

Awww, he's so cute, poor little guy. I hope he does OK under sedation... :(
One of my terriers kept her baby teeth like that too, took a long time for them to 'come out', I probably should have gotten them pulled, but she is OK now.
Good for you Terry for rescueing him! :D

Sheri,,that is exactly why I'm thinking "Woody" will be the name of this pup...I just can't find and "B" names I really like...and Woody seems to "fit" the little twig of a dog.... I need to put him on my UPS scale and see what he weighs..Tomorrow morning he goes to the vet....
Then his name will be "Terry's little money pit" Hah! :D
