During the last 5 months I have developed a friendship with the Master Breeder Wilfredo Bertran. Mr. Bertran is responsible for breeding the most important PPRPF horses of our time and perhaps of all times. He bred Kofresí, Don Toquí, Carabalí, Cibuco, Cuentas Claras, Candelaria just to name a few stallions and famous mares such as Galanita and Cucululu.

He is 80 years old and when I first met him at his humble apartment in Florida he told me it was a miracle he was alive due to his heart condition. However he opened his mind and heart to me and for the last 5 months I've been speaking with him almost daily. I consider myself privileged to have such a tutor about how to breed good horses.

During this time I have accumulated enough material for an article that is due in the upcoming issue. Today (Nov 15th., 2006) he told me he may not live to see the article since he has to have immediate heart surgery (the Doctor wanted to do the surgery tomorrow), but Mr Bertran said no because he wanted to call some of his friends first. The surgery will take place the 28th of this month.

I would like to ask for your prayers for the recovery of Mr. Bertran.

Because of his breeding success this man touched our lives. Just look at just about any pedigree of a PPRPF horse and you’ll see his animals there. I feel very fortunate to have his friendship but at the same time I am very grateful for his contribution to our breed.

Keep him in your prayers and let’s hope he gets to see the article and have many more years helping us to be better breeders of the horse we love.
