This is Contrapunto Segundo. CPII, as his friends call him, is one of the few remaining direct Contrapunto sons. He is now 21 years old and still looks 10. He is pure white and sound as a dollar. He will run laps in the front paddock when we put him out. Just for the joy of being alive and the wind in his face I guess. I am going to try and use him as my avatar.

This picture was taken about 1993. Carlos Conde was working for me then and this was at a demonstration that we put on

I have had him the longest of any of my stallions that I still have. I imported him when he was 5 months old, after buying him at 5 weeks. He was that funky chestnut, going gray color that they go through, thin as a rail from the importation and fuzzy as a bear the first time I saw him in person. I thought I had really done it. Buyers regret can be a terrible thing. As he shed off and grew up it became apparent that he was beautiful!!

Now, after all these years, he was definately a good decision and his daughters are excellent producers for me. I have a son of his that I am using in my pinto breeding program.

He is a special horse.

Yes Susan, I remember one of the first times I visited your farm and you had so many beautiful stallions. You had Santana and you know pintos are my favorite. You asked me which of your stallions that I liked the best. I really surprised you when I said, CPII. He still is a favorite of mine and normally I am not a gray person. He is so refined. His presence just screams LOOK AT ME---I AM SOMETHING. We own a yearling grand daughter of his and WOW is she gaited. She is palomino going gray. I told our partner Debbie just yesterday that I really liked this filly. Here is one of his grand daughters.

Yes, Susan had half ownership of SANTANA. I must say he looked his best when he was under Susan's care. He was at his prime when I saw him. He won at World the next year.

That was such a devastating loss to the whole Pinto line of Paso Fino when Santana passed, as it must to have been for Susan, whether she still owned him or not, and for Debbie King as well. I felt the loss all the way over here.... :(
We treasure our Santana daughter...

I bought half interest in Santana when he was a yearling. That never changed. It was such a loss for all of us. I didn't keep hardly any of his children, never thinking that we would loose him.

He was such a sweet boy. I bred him here his first season. Generally Debbie and I would switch him out once or twice a year. I didn't want my babies as early as she did. Her winters are so mild.

Santana had his stall that we used for him every time. He would come in after being gone for months and just walk right in. Just like he had been out in the paddock for a couple of hours.

He was very sweet and so easy for me to handle and breed. The biggest problem that I had with him is that I am short and he was a big boy.

I don't know if you ever get completely over a loss like this. He was so young and could have produced so many more babies. We just have to be thankful that we have what we have and do our best to continue to produce quality grandchildren.
