Santana was mentioned on another post about Contrapunto Segundo.

I thought I would also post it here. Some people were surprised that I coowned Santana since he was a yearling.

Thinking about him again has made me very sad. You sometimes don't apreciate what you have until it is gone.

Anyway.. this was my reply.

I bought half interest in Santana when he was a yearling. That never changed. It was such a loss for all of us. I didn't keep hardly any of his children, never thinking that we would loose him.

He was such a sweet boy. I bred him here his first season. Generally Debbie and I would switch him out once or twice a year. I didn't want my babies as early as she did. Her winters are so mild.

Santana had his stall that we used for him every time. He would come in after being gone for months and just walk right in. Just like he had been out in the paddock for a couple of hours.

He was very sweet and so easy for me to handle and breed. The biggest problem that I had with him is that I am short and he was a big boy.

I don't know if you ever get completely over a loss like this. He was so young and could have produced so many more babies. We just have to be thankful that we have what we have and do our best to continue to produce quality grandchildren.

What happened to him? I missed that somewhere.

He sure was beautiful!

Susan, knowing how our Canela is, Santana must have been the sweetest boy. My heart aches for you.
Canela does not have a mean bone in her body...she is big and she is beautiful. Everyone who comes to our farm remarks on her sweet disposition, color and size. She has a smutty dun coloring with the dappling like his. She has two blue eyes. Her dam is Sangria de El Dione, who belongs to Pam and Ray Knisely of Ft. Pierce, FL. Her dam, Sandy, is the Pinto mare in the team of Paso Finos pulling the carriage that has opened the Grand Nationals ceremonies several years in a row.

Here is Canela de Sangria, five year old Santana daughter, we've had her since she was a yearling. She is pregnant with her first foal here:

and here is her daughter, Pequena Flor, now a yearling herself. Her sire is Pegasus Dos de Estaban:

Both are homozygous.

So sad

I was with a friend of mine at Nats last year when we saw Debbie and she told us she had just lost him. I almost started to cry myself and never even knew the horse. But I could tell from her how much love she had for him.

If he was anything like his son, Arrebol del Mistico, then he was a real sweetheart. My dad has Arrebol de Mistico (we call him Rojo), and he is a very personable and sweet horse. He is a red roan and he has a "to-die-for" mane! I am so sorry for your loss of Santana del Cardo.
