I got my husband's blessing to take in a young black male Lab from the shelter to foster and place in an adoptive hime. Poor little guy was out of time, and I haven't fostered in a while. I am ready to get back into it. Anyway, at the last minute, this boy was adopted from the shelter. So, the next day, I found out that the shelter had two 4-month-old black Lab males that had been there for a month. I went to see them, and they were adorable and tested nicely. Then when I saw that PTS (put to sleep) was written on their card, I decided to take them.

I brought them home today. They are wild and crazy Lab boys, but they will calm down after a few days of routine. While I was picking these boys up from the shelter, my friend called to let me know that she was in another county at a shelter picking up 7 Labs that were out of time. There was one that looked like a mix, and Lab Rescue could only take Labs (hey! they have to draw the line somewhere!). Would I take him? He's been there longer than anyone which often means the shelter staff really likes his personality, but it also means that a date with a lethal injection (or maybe gas in that county) are drawing nearer. So, guess what? I am now going to have three young Lab males to foster.

Please have a kind thought or prayer for me as I tell my husband that my one pup has turned into three and that we will have three extra stockings hanging here for Christmas!

Glad to hear there are others out there like my husband. I am sure they will give you hours of enjoyment. Thank you for saving them.

OMG! I hate to tell ya but labs don't settle down til they are like 7 YEARS OLD, they MIGHT quit chewing by the time they are 4.

BUT you may have a great relay race team, just need a height dog like a JACK RUSSEL - they get along great with labs,

MWAAAHHHAHAHAAAHAHAAAAAAA.

BTW we NEED pics. I love labs. (no I am NOT taking one!)

The good news is that people love black Labs! My brother adopted one from the shelter...talk about a big, precocious spoiled pup! :D

I will get pictures soon and they will be posted as referrals on www.labrescuenc.org I will post them here too.

Yeah Coreen, I have a 7-year-old Lab who still acts like he is three, and he was a real stinker when he was three! Even with a CD to his credit! It was like he could behave in the ring when it counted, but when he was home, all bets were off. Probably would have helped if his antics didn't make me laugh so much! My 4-year-old female has calmed down a bit more than my male, but she is a dedicated chewer. She's not terrible, but she will grab something to chew up often enough to make you think twice about not putting your shoes away!

These foster pups are typical Labs and I imagine that they will be perpetual puppies. The wildness I was referring to is a crazy "OMG! I can't believe I got out of that place! You are my favorite person in the world, and I am going to keep jumping and flinging myself at you until I feel I have worshipped and kissed you enough!" They are just wild to have space to run. They were both out in the fenced yard today chasing each other and biting little trees that still have leaves that blow in the wind. They were pouncing, running, wrestling, and just making me laugh. It's the best paycheck for getting them out -- just watching them love the minute they are in. They are great teachers for those of us who forget that "right now" is all we really have and that life is a celebration.

These guys remind me of Crash and Eddy, the two possums in Ice Age II. But I decided that the name Crash (however appropriate) might hinder his adoptiveness! The girls have named them Comet (after the reindeer) and Cole (after Carolina Hurricanes player Erik Cole).

BTW, my husband has already guessed that there is a third dog. He was meeting the two boys when he noticed a guilty look on my face. He started looking around for the third dog while I was laughing and swearing there wasn't a third foster dog in the house. I wasn't lying...the third one is at the vet getting neutered, vaccinated and heartworm checked. He finally looked at me and said, "Is there a third one coming?" BUSTED!

Good point! Next time I will point out that I don't do horse rescue!

These guys will hopefully have forever homes soon. But you are right...Tony's pretty understanding about my need to do rescue. I am gonna keep him.

My husband gave me that book last Christmas. It made me laugh and cry. Mostly I laughed. I never had a Lab with the Marley personality, but I have had some of Marley in each of my dogs.

So good of you! Bless you!

Here in MN there is a shelter closing, the city gave the contract to another shelter and the new shelter WONT take in the exsisting animals so they will all be PTS by next week if not adopted..

I am angry that I cannot go get one to love. I take care of a quadraplegic in his home, I live in a down stairs appt, but he will not allow me to have ANY animals.. Sucks... Someday when I get my ranch, I will only save animals from shelters, would NEVER buy a dog or cat from a breeder, too many need savings and love...

aaahhhh

((((hugs)))) to you and your new puppys!

Isn't it just the hardest test in the world to say "no"?

It will all work out Jeany... of that I am sure.

Its like when I walked into the Petsmart to buy some dog FOOD, and left with a sick, skinny, anemic, flea & lice infested Yorkie that I was not sure would even live through the night...

And now....almost a month later...he has gained two pounds, had his surgery to remove five teeth, had a two week round of antibiotics and is like a different dog... a Happy, happy soul... yep, he is here to stay.

Sometimes it is opportunity knocking, even though the timing might not be *right*....

Its a test of life.... it happens all the time.

Its like when I end up taking horses that I wasn't even shopping for....
It is so hard to say...."no" ;-)
