RALEIGH, N.C. -- A Raleigh family known for helping underprivileged people despite their own difficulties will be getting some help thanks to a popular television show.

The ABC television show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" will tear down William and Linda Riggins' two-bedroom, one-bathroom home in the Mordecai of Raleigh, then spend the following five days building a new one in its place. Their house is said to be falling apart.

The Riggins have three children, ages 6, 4 and 3.

A spokeswoman for the family says William Riggins is legally blind. He was a tailor before losing most of his sight. Linda Riggins is a social worker who's been limited for some time because of severe arthritis in both hips.

Yet, the two are involved in a local ministry which helps underprivileged children and which encourages empowerment for low-income families.

Demolition of the existing home is tommorrow. There is a lot of area BUZZ about this. Area contractors have donated their services.

Has it come to your area? The show is suppose to be doing an Extreme Home Makeover in every state. That is such a nice thing to do for people who need it!

They did one in Atlanta last year. The family's home sewer system would back up into their basement EVERY time it rained...
They built them a beautiful home. I remember the little boy (the youngest son) wanted to be a heart surgeon to help people and he got the most wonderful theme room. The other brother got a beach themed room. I loved the downstairs living/kitchen area...it was just beautiful.

Extreme Home was up in the Philadelphia area last year. Of course Philadelphia being the wonderfully friendly city -- cough cough --- that it isn't ended up giving the show, actually I should say the neighbors of the homeowners, gave the show a hard time because of the noise, and the traffic etc.... Talk about the city of brotherly love.....hmmm

I do enjoy watching it. I think Ty is a trip!!

Some friends here won "America's Ugliest Bathroom"...and it was, bronw 1" tile over every surface.
They got a beautiful new one with new tile and all the gizmos. But the people who they bought the house from, the people's whose pride and joy was that ugly bathroom, were sure PO'd with the national attention. Everyone in town knew who did the original.

Here, I found the article: http://www.americanstandard-us.com/trade/newsroom_detail.asp?NewsID=102

Maybe that is why they have been broadcasting on the news which streets are blocked off from traffic for this event.

Interesting, I first knew about it here earlier last week, overhearing the "table of men" discussing it, at my breakfast spot in town. They are always discussing "world affairs"...or at least "solving" local issues and politics. ha
