Lori when I was in Vegas (lived and rode there for four years) I was active in the BLM and wild horse and mustang preservation.Mustangs and feral horses are two differant animals and a whole debate among scientists exisits there. The slaughter is not a good thing but who consumes is not the issue. Human consumption is not any differant than for other animals higher life forms or not  However the roundups and greed abuse has to be checked by involved individals like horse people not phanatics on eitherside.

There IS something you can do about it...2 things actually...get people to stop breeding OR take in all the unwanted horses yourself and give them a nice home lol:
PasoJosieJ
08-18-2007, 03:17 AM
Thats easier said then done I tried to get my father-in-law to stop breeding but he wont even through I know he would never send the horses to be slaughtered.
Heidi

I am for horse slaughter, for any purpose. Once the horse is dead, it is dead. It doesn't care what happens to it, and neither did its' owners, which is sad.
This just means that for people who DO care about their horses, they will do everything in their power to give their horse a dignified end. For the people who don't care?...it will alleviate a lot of needless equine suffering from neglect, starvation or abandonment.
I think horse slaughter is necessary, until it becomes un-necessary.
I can't save them all, or care for them all. The best I can do is care for my own the best I can.

Dont be worried!!!!! the next question will be, and who will be feeding these horses? jejejejejejejejejejejejejejejejejejeje !!!!!
I am very glad to hear Lori that your cousin is concern!!!!!!!!!
I dont need to do any explaination nor try convince nor discuss nor "DEBATE" with anyone in PUBLIC as of why I am againts HORSE SLAUGHTERING!!!!!!!! all I can say is, KUDOS for those that can find other venues than just in plain words send a horse to the KILLER for easy quick CASH!!!!!!!! for me that is being a plain "KILLER"
I am 100% percent against HORSE SLAUGHTERING and is all I can say!!!!!!
AND "YES" we do save horses!!!!!
CALL ME A MORON!!!! CALL ME STUPID, LOVE OR HATE ME, and guess what makes no difference!!!!!
AGAIN!!!! for all of you that loves DEBATES and QUESTIONS!!!!!!!!! sorry!!!! this is my opinion!!!!!!! and let me encorage you to stand infront of a mirrow big and tall and debate and ask all you want to yourself!!!!! perhaps that will make you feel a litle better!!!!!!!!

I feel the same way about horse slaughter I think it is CRUEL AND UNNESSISARY
Pam M
08-18-2007, 03:36 AM
I agree that it's cruel and sad but I don't agree that it's unnecessary. On the contrary, until people stop breeding and start stepping up to take in "extra" horses, it is not only necessary but it can be kinder than the alternative.

There is nothing human about killing a horse and using it for dog food I think that is the worst alteritive
Just a question. What do you feed your dog?
For the record, I'm a naturalist. I believe horses are prey animals and meant to be eaten. I personally feel it is a disgrace to waste so much nutritional meat...for what? Vanity? There are children who go to bed hungry in this country, every night. I'm not sure why Americans are so selfish that we'd rather see hungry kids then face the reality that this is a finite planet, with finite resources, that will sustain a finite number of life forms. It is called Nature...and it's how it is meant to be. JMO

What???? Are you kidding???? Every year there are news articles about people being attacked and killed by lions and tigers and panthers and etc. etc. etc. Are you telling me that you don't think that humans are prey animals too?????
How many joggers get attacked every year by mountain lions...??? We ARE prey animals...

What???? Are you kidding???? Every year there are news articles about people being attacked and killed by lions and tigers and panthers and etc. etc. etc. Are you telling me that you don't think that humans are prey animals too?????
I guess it depends on the humans. Every year there are also articles about humans being attacked and killed by dogs and each other for that matter. So are we prey for dogs too? What about snakes, they kill people. Moose kill people all the time. Rats killed thousands with the plague they gave us. Are we prey to them as well? Cars kill more people than any animals ever thought of as do cigarettes. As Josie said, that's nature. Kill or be killed. Predator and prey. Only the strong survive. Do I feel more like a prey animal than a predator? Get a grip. Not in this lifetime.

Regarding predator vs prey and how 'man' fits in there...
We ARE on the menu (predators; sharks, big cats, bears et cetera) and we are also mortal (prey; moose, deer, hippo and other herbivores).
Yes it is natural. Lions will kill cheetahs and hyenas...predator killing other killable predators.
Heidi

I feed my dogs bread and table food my dogs are just like people
Um, no, your dogs are not just like people, they are dogs. It is you who are treating them like people.
Dog food is balanced to meet a canine's dietary needs. People food does not meet a dog's dietary needs. Unless you have researched home-made dog food and have the proper ingredients, supplements and vitamins, I feel you are doing your dogs a disservice by feeding them in the manner you have stated.
Have you heard of the vegetarians who have tried to make their pets eat the same diet they do because of their beliefs? They have blinded their cats because of the unbalanced vegetarian diet being used to feed a carnivorous animal. I am unfamiliar with how a vegetarian diet affects dogs.
Dogs and cats need to be fed like dogs and cats just like a horse needs to be fed like a horse.

Only animal alive who has no predators- Blue whale.
Not necessarily true...I watched an episode of Blue Planet the other night where a group (pod?) of Killer Whales attacked a mother Blue Whale and her calf. The KWs seperated the two, tired the calf and killed and ate it.
Granted, the KWs appeared unable to harm the adult, but the young were certainly on their "list" of edible sea creatures.

SOCIALISM??????? hummmm we need HILLARY!!!!! CAROLU, dont forget RELIGION and CULTURE!!!!!!! that can also play a BIG roll on HUNGER!!!!!! Lets be NUDE!!!!! mmmmmm!!! is part of being NATURALIST too!!!!!! PICTURES PLEASE!!!!!
Felix...if you want to put it in a religious text, then we are ALL God's creatures and God created horses to be prey animals, and therefore wants them eaten and not wasted.
And if you want to put it in a cultural text, remember that horses originally came from North America. Some escaped to Asia on the land bridge. Those that remained here were eaten by early North Americans. The Indians ate horses as did all the early settlers, pilgrims, and pioneers. It is only a recent fad to be so wasteful.

What about elephants. Seems they may not have any natural predators either.
Lions.
I just watched my DVD of Planet Earth and it showed a segment of a large pride of lions who worked together (weight) to bring down a healthy adult elephant.
I think you may be closest to the Blue Whale as having no/few oceanic predators, since the segment I watched was where the calf expired from Killer Whales hunting it. You are absolutely correct, the young of every species are vulnerable.
I missed everything about Gitano last night, how is he doing today?

the slaughter issue is a hard one, to do it raises serious issues, and to not do it causes serious problems which seem to have no solution, therefore all I can do is take a neutral position on it for the time being.
What we see in this world, and call nature or natural, is actually a severe corruption of nature. I call it normal, as in normal for a terribly messed up world. But what nature was like after it came from the hand of God is what real nature is. I cannot answer all the questions that can arise as to how it all worked, but i do know it was perfectly balanced with no pain or death for any of the creatures, and that all of them were vegetarians. There are little signs and evidences left in nature, and even in the very makeup of the most confirmed predators, that such was the original way of things. Here's a chaptor on it. http://www.preparingforeternity.com/pp/pp02.htm
