hi, new to paso's owned tw horses, bought an 8yr old dun gelding with plebeyo is grandsire on dam side and carmin out of resorte iv on sire side , he has great ground manners but when you lift the reins he tucks head and has about 100 beats a minute and going very slow, kind of scary to me as i am new to them, feel the power underneath me and likes to go,i heard he may be fino gaited and am worried i am not a good enough rider to get him going as a trail /pleasure type ride?? any suggestions? he is stocky and beatiful head ,may have to trade for more laid back trail type paso? help??

He's a pretty one! My filly is a Plebeyo g-daughter and both of ours (yours & mine) are built similarly, well-rounded! With Carmin, you will have much more 'life' in your Paso than in mine...and your Paso should show exceptional smarts!
It almost sounds like your gelding Finos...if you want a more relaxed gait, have you tried not putting very much mouth contact on the reins? Or does he just tuck his head and "go-fino" when you pick them up?
Is the problem that he takes steps a mile-a-minute but he only moves inches-per-hour?
This could be as simple as you both just needing time to get to know one another. How long have you had him?
If he won't settle down to a trail gait that you are comfortable with, you may need to consider a trade...

yes he feet go mile a minute and moves inches per mile, only had him a month or so, pretty much i lift the reins and he knows to go and bingo ,like thunder underneath you, if i give him his head he seems to want to go faster but out of sink kind of, just seems he is working so hard when im telling him (its ok buddy just relaxe )very kind horse, i can get off him and start walking anywere without lead rope and i can lead him with imaginary rope around ,back to the left ,go by the barn stop and walk and he follows, very smart guy, but yes i may neeed a more of a trail type pleasure horse, anyone want a show horse? thanks
Gee, let me think (thinking hard here) gosh, the only thought that comes to mind is you could give him to me!
Grin!
give him some time to get to know you. if you have only had him a month, let him get to know you and show him you want relaxed and layed back. i bet that boy will figure it out in a hurry!

Me me me me.
Lol He sounds great. I don't know much about fino horses. But I would think he will relax with time. I have a 222 son that can lay back with the best of Qtr. horses our kick in the Brio and compete with Pasos. You will have plenty of offers for a trade including me. Just be a little more selective about what you want. I see so many show horses that won't quite take that National title being sold to people that only want to trail ride but don't have the ability or patience to transition the horse over.

I've got one that may be ready shortly, a week or so physically, a couple a months weight and muscle wise. I'm not sure about exact size but I would think he is 14hh.

I also have a gelding out of Hechizero de Carmin Sin Par ! He is now eight years old. I have had him since he was nine months . He is just now waking up and showing some brio . He also follows me around when I drop the reins . I love those blood lines .

Let me see if I can find it . He was at Greener Pastures . I saw him there eight years ago. He is full brother to Grand National Champion Lirica de J Dos C . There might be a photo of him at Greener pastures .

Sounds like you got a quite well trained fino show horse, (maybe just wasn't quite good enough to place real high in shows.) It's quite posible to train them to calm down and be a good trail horse, but does take some real study in training, and I don't know a lot of trainers that do it. A lot of them are training for show and trying to get the firey fino. I'm sure the best idea is to trade for one that's already a calm trail rider. As a lot of paso folk just love the high energy fino.

All I can say is you have one dang fine looking horse there. Good breeding too. You mentioned Carmen but I've never seen a Paso with any que tal in its lines that wasn't very nicely, tightly gaited. You've also got Hilaches.
Maybe you should try riding him more and let him relax before you consider trading or selling. He might suprise you.

now here is a first for me..a guy with a classic fino horse, that's not happy!!
some folks would complain if they we're hung with a new rope and
burried in a solid gold casket
i'm just jealous....you won't keep him long, if he's forsale.... lucky bumb  ;-)
paso chikkaaaa.

thats a very nice gelding

Well...mrhappypants...you make me very happy because that's just the Paso Fino that we're trying to make more of here...the type you're looking for. Laid back...easy-going...happy to travel down the trail at a nice walk if you want, or pick up to a steady, ground-covering corto or largo at the lift of the reins!
I don't want to say we're trying to breed the brio out of the Paso...just simply make it not quite so obvious, and more on command than spontaneous! ;-)
Unfortunately none of my youngsters are under saddle yet, and if you are a relative newbie, I sure don't recommend a young horse...but what you're looking for is out there...have fun, that horse may be just around the corner!

Frank has found a new horse. He found Rondiz a nice home and got a quiet, young mare instead. Pics he's sent me look great and I think he is very happy with his new horse.
I hope the new owners of Rondiz are just as happy.

Hi
We have been having a blast on Roni. Sure wish it wasnt the middle of winter cause i want to get out on the trails and see what Roni will be like. He is highly intelligent has has some good training some where in his past. He is for sale if anyone is interested in a big gelding with tons of brio that can fino but has a range of speed to his gait as well.

Just thought i would give a up date on Roni. Took him on a 5 hr trail ride yesterday. WHAT A HORSE!!!! He had a blast. He loves to trail ride. He likes to lead but will drop back and follow. Water isnt a problem. Never spooked never offered to do anything out of line. And he could have went many many more miles. If anyone out there is looking for a flashy gelding that is stout and loves to trail ride send them my way he is ready to go.

This reminded me of when I first got my Paso and had him looked at by a local Paso judge. He told me that he could be a show horse but that he will never fino....
I didn't even know what that meant so I just nodded, wrote it down and researched on the internet later...lol I was hopeful that it wasn't anything serious....lol
Owning a Paso introduced me to a whole new world of terms I had never heard before. It really helped me to go to a training facility and try out several Pasos to be shown what a well trained Paso with a solid gait feels like in each. Then I was able to go back and reinforce what I wanted and weed out what I didn't.
I might be wrong, but just because he CAN Fino doesn't mean he has to. I stopped Scooter from hard trotting by doing plenty of walking and then asking him to move up one speed but refusing to accept the trott. If he trotted I brought him back down to a walk and tried again. When he did the corto we went happily around the ring. Didn't take him long to stop offering the trott altogether.
I'm not knowledgable enough about show Pasos to know what kind of training they have had and to say if they can transition well to the trails. If I were you I'd follow your instincts. If it feels like too much horse for it, chances are it is. When it comes to being safe, I've got nothing to prove to anyone. I trust my gut.
I've never ridden a Paso that could Fino. Can I try him once. Please? Please? Please? lol

Oh, I don't think that Minouri has to go as far as Miami. Middleboro will do, there are a bunch of Fino horses there. Go back to the same training facility you went to, tell Bobbie you would like to try a Fino horse for comparison and to learn more about your breed. My boarders mare will Fino, but I don't reallyenjoy it. It is alot of action, very little forward motion. I'd invite you to come try her, but she is very green and some times you get fino and some somethings something else. I personally can sit a pleasure corto all day long. I also enjoy watching my friends with trotting horses get more and more tired and sore as the ride goes on. But there is nothing like a fast largo. It sounds like you know exactly what you are doing! I have a friend who just bought a 3 yr old filly. The trainer told her to work on gait by doing a lot of corto/walk transitions. But l'll take a trail Paso any day over a show horse.

hi Terri,
Maybe we could make the Middleboro trip together. It has been YEARS since my first trip. But I'd love to go out there again now that I've gotten to know my horse a lot better. Does he let people come by like that? Do we pay?
Thanks for the compliment. I'm an average rider at best, but I'm patient and I trust my instincts as far as seeking out help for what I don't know.
And ppl who are offering to let me try out their horses....careful....you never know when you might hear a knock on the door....lol My butt is a gait connoisseur. It's an addiction, really. I'll be seeking help for it soon.

Yep, we can go to Middleboro. Was thinking about setting up a couple of lessons for my daughter Sometime in Feb or March. Unfortunately life keeps interferring with my horsey plans lately. I'll let you know when I set a time up. I can't speak for Bobbie, but everytime I've been there he has been very generous with his time and horses in order to educate. He let me ride a beautiful buckskin gelding that was absolutely finger tipped trained. WAAY fun!!!!

Welcome happy! Glad to see you here!
Grove Creek Farm has some exceptional bloodlines for purpose-bred pleasure Pasos you might want to take a look at. They are in your general area.... Michelle and Leonard Branson ar ethe owners.... You can Google Grove Creek Farm for the URL
Barb Preiss and Trudy/Dennis Weichers also have some very exceptional Pasos for pleasure/trail available.

I think you are a little confused. I traded for Roni. Frank got a very nice quite mare in exchange for Roni. We love Roni. He just wasnt what his former owner needed. It took a couple weeks to figure Roni out but with someone that loves brio Roni is a great ride. I was just updating everyone on his progress.
