Ditto, I always go for nice used stuff...
People always buy then get rid of stuff.
think about how many people that TRY to get into horses, then give up.
all there stuff is like new. ;-)

Erin, I'm in the market right now for a 15" BM saddle, a nice saddle pad -- something with a lot of blue in it, and a cool looking breastcollar. Know anyone? ;-)

I know, I know...I need to get the horse first! :D

12/14/2006:
Almost new Bob Marshall Sport Saddle including custom made sheep skin cover, EZ Ride stirrups and Skito Equalizer pad. The saddle had a horn but has been removed with the pommel wrapped. Other than a small blemish on the cantle, this saddle looks new. The Skito pad is in very good shape just a tad dirty because I can’t fit in the washer and the local laundry frowns upon horse clothes in the machines. All items purchased seperately would cost you close to $1450 plus S&H. I’m asking $1000 including shipping. I have a few more photos if you’d like to see the cover and the pad. I believe the saddle is a 15. I’m 5’6", 145 pounds and it fits me nicely. I can’t take a credit card but I’ll be happy to take the convenient checks they provide around the holidays. Saddle will be shipped after payment has been received. Located in N. Florida. Please contact Chris at clittlefield@baker-harris.com or call my cell at 850-545-4380.

I really like that saddle. How stupid would it be for me to buy it without a horse to wear it?

I don't think it would be stupid - treeless saddles fit almost all horses!
Plus - you can use it when you borrow a horse until then - that way the stirrups will be exactly where you want them and you'll know how to cinch it up properly.

its nice, and very much worth the money,
saddle pad, seat cover, saddle, and the up grade in stuirrups.
but, make sure you dont mind the wrap where the horn was taken off, Iknow I would not care, but you might.

I noticed that, and it bothers me because that tape might start to curl and roll back.

Oh, I get it. They wrapped it w/leather and glued it. Could maybe cause the same problem, I guess. I like the second one, also.

Looks like they wrapped, screwed or nailed and glued that leather on. I don't think that would bother me. There isn't going to be anything messing with that particular place on the saddle. But it may be worth pointing it out to the seller that it isn't particularily attractive and see if they will take a little off the price if you were interested.

You know - they seem to ask a fortune for a used BM regardless of its looks or the shape it's in.

I guess they really do retain their value.

OH - I LOVE that seat cover!! We need one for our aussies - they are just too slick without full seat breeches on.

I have the black one with leather, its not slippery at all, and I have been in some hairy situations,
its very secure.

Sharon, I agree that buying a BM is a good idea. They do fit almost every horse. You want to make sure you buy one that fits you. The one I sold Shelley was too large for my husband, he slid around in it. If you go to their site, they have a fit guide. You measure the circumfrence of your upper thigh and buy the size of saddle they recommend for your size.

To answer your question, I would buy anything used. Bits, cinchs and pads would get cleaned before I'd use them though.

she rode in my 15" and fit fine,
it was Sport Saddle, I know the western 15" is a tad smaller.

Yeah, I saw that measuring guide. I'll have to do that soon. I need to get a saddle of my own. I just loved Erin's -- it's way better than a conventional saddle. It was so comfortable, and you can feel so much more of the horse's movements. I especially like that the horse is comfortable with it.

Well Sharon, if you like the BM but want more of an English saddle, you can get a Barefoot. They are smaller and lighter then the BM, built the same way and just as cushy. And they are sevral hundred dollars cheaper!!! Very nice, well made saddles.

I consider my saddle quest complete now...three different treeless saddles for diffrent uses. I have a very happy hiney!

I do remember seeing the Barefoot, but I didn't know what to make of it. Besides size, weight, "look", and cost, is there a major performance advantage of one over the other?

I'm going to check it out right now.

No. You can use the dressage saddle to show in, that would be the biggest difference. If you are going to be packing your saddle around to different places to ride, the Barefoot is a little smaller and easier. But, if all you want to do is trail ride and need to hook on packs and stuff, you'd probably be happier with the BM. Their essentially built the exact same way, but one is an english shape.

Two things that haven't been mentioned yet are that the Endurance BM is made for people to post, so the stirrups are set a little farther back. If you want to trail ride, but don't want a horn, then you get a trail model and remove the horn, as is done in the picture of the one for sale.

And do NOT buy a Circle Y Bob Marshall. They are VERY high in the cantel and pomel and provide a secure seat, but that horn would eviserate you under a tree. Make sure you buy an Original Bob Marshall Sport Saddle.

The weight thing is a plus, because I'll probably be hauling it around, especially in the beginning. I doubt I'll be showing. Mostly, I'll be trail riding, but I also want to start on some basic gaited dressage.

I feel as if I should actually try it on for size so I can compare it to the BM. Don't tack stores have some kind of wood horse you can do this with? I think I've seen them.

I kind of like the Cheyenne -- it weighs only eight lbs, and I can use either Western fenders or english stirrup leathers.

I, personally, am not a fan of the Cheyenne. It is a Torsion rip-off, and looks to offer no security.....however, the London Dressage saddle looks good. I'd buy that one if given the choice, for the deeper seat. This is just MY preference though, as I prefer deeper seats/western-type....

BM is at the top of my list. Best type of saddles I've ever ridden in.....

I spoke to the Barefoot distributor in WA, and he said that "people say" that the BM saddle is too wide (I think he meant "too long") for PFs because PFs have shorter backs than other horses -- something about the saddle rubbing the horse in the shoulders or somewhere on the sides. I can't remember exactly.

I didn't notice any problems with the BM when I rode in it, so he could be saying this to promote the Barefoot. I happened to find the BM very comfortable.

The barefoot cheyenne IS WONDRFUL!!!!! I have both BM endurance and Barefoot Cheyenne and I find myself grabbing the barefoot every time.I am keeping the BM for the few times that my hubby rides. You need to try one. They have test models too(I think) And I find it very secure.

Now I'm all confused (but in a good way!). How do you try out "test" models? Is it on that wooden horse in the tack shops?

Maybe the preference depends upon body shape of the rider? I haven't a clue.

I'm so embarrassed that I didn't know that  ! Thanks, Erin. I think I'll ask to do that ASAP.

Erin, what do you think about what the guy at Barefoot said about the BM being too wide, too long, or whatever it was? It seemed perfect for Incendio.

ErinC
12-21-2006, 12:07 AM
my saddle has been on PJ, Centeuro, Incendio, and hummmmmmm who else, it fits every one I put it on.
and if it was not to big for C, when he first got here then NO it is not to big for any of them....

maybe the BIGGER saddles that are over 16 1/2" seats might start to get to big , and I would never get anything but a round skirt,,

so ,,no, sorry I think that he was selling you a load of horse dung.

Read this post, check out Joys saddle,
her friend Gail in VT sells them, I would get one in a heart beat .
if I wanted another treeless type saddle. ( If I had the extra money )
I saw Joys in person and I could not believe how well made it is.
