Ok have this new saddle. I have to buy a new girth for it. I was never educated on size of girth to use.

Could some one show me pics of a correctly fitting girth? It is for a columbian saddle....

I always thought it would be a hand lenth down from the saddle on both sides when cinched up, but dont know if that is right...

Thanks all!

I think the best way to fit, would be to measure under your horse's belly. You would want the cinch rings to be above the elbow area and into the sort of fleshy area above/behind the underarm.
Ack. I don't think I described that correctly.
I guess if the cinch rings fall between just above the elbow and a hand or so below the saddle rings it should be okay...you need to have enough room to tighten/loosen the cinch for various horses or a younger horse's changing body as they grow.
*I just looked at a horse photo and if you locate the point of the shoulder and go back to the ribcage on a horizontal line, that is about where you'd like your cinch rings to lie.
Measure from the center of the belly, in the cinch area, to just above the elbow on one side (see above), then double that measurement and purchase that size, or purchase the next inch-sized increment up.

Terry Wallace: Do you have any pics of how the girth should fit on a columbian saddle??

I do not have a photo....that I can think of at the moment.

I like my girths to be about 8" below the saddle ring...on ANY kind of saddle... I want the girth rings well clear of the elbow area and well above it... no matter if it is my Colombian, Dressage, western, Paragon patrol, or Aussie saddle.... I prefer a neoprene covered girth to any other.
