We had to put one of our Boxers to sleep last week. Lua was one of our rescues. We picked her up from the animal hospital when she was five months old. She'd been beaten so badly she'd almost died and had had two surgeries on her head. She was extremely timid and fearful at first but developed into a wonderful dog. Despite having lifelong problems with her hips, she was healthy and active until about six weeks ago, when the vet found a fast growing tumor in her abdomen. She would have been thirteen in January.

Many ((((hugs))))
However...I am very happy to hear that Lua lived to be 13. I have heard 8 is the average for boxers and my Mom will be devistated when ours crosses rainbow bridge. Why do the best dogs have such short lives? :(

Got any pix?

Lori,
I've heard that the average life expectancy for a Boxer is 8, too, but all of ours have lived longer. Perry, who was a big, BIG male, only lived to be eleven; we had to have him put to sleep last year because his hips were so bad he couldn't walk. Lua would have been thirteen next month. And Sunny, our other female, will be thirteen in February. She's slowed down a lot, but she's still in reasonably good health except for some subcutaneous tumors on her legs.
I think the 'average' life expectancy of Boxers is reduced a lot because so many younger dogs die from "bloat" -- often caused by poor feeding practices by the dog owners.
I don't have any uploadable photos of our Boxers. ':('

That sure is good news. Not that it hurts any less at 13 than it does at 8. :(

Six Boxers . . . and thirteen puppies . . .'' Gosh, Shelley, that's mind-boggling. Not that it takes much to boggle my mind the week before Christmas.

What a wonderful place she found in your home. Lucky Girl!

i have friends that bought a boxer female as a pup and then 2 months later were given her full brother who was not supposed to live past 6 months of age. four vets said his heart defect would never let him live past 6 months. he is now a year old. completely Unstoppable! isn't it amazing what Love will do?

We're so sorry but glad she had a great life.

It is interesting that it's the medium sized dogs that live the longest. My childhood "superdog" was diagnosed with bone cancer when he was 13 and we had to put him down. It broke my heart because he was amazing. Never had another dog that came close to him.
