Some of you may remember me posting about a mph we took on in September, underweight, totally matted tail. He has been here four months now and has become one of the family. I had my doubts early on , he is very herd bound, which is something I can not stant. But, we have been working on it and he now will pay attention to me instead of the other horses. He is great with kids, my daughter and all of her friends prefer to ride him, he next reins great, stops great, and 'trots' whenever she asks him. He has put on a lot of weight, he is rounded out in the hip, shoulder, his head does not look like a skull anymore. But, I can still see the outline of his ribs. He is very barrell shaped and looking at him, to cover the ribs he would be huge. Will these ribs always show? I will try to get a picture of him with out the saddle, here he is with my daughter up, in her new saddle and gear that Santa gave her.

Tracey, he looks to be in good weight right now, no /\-shape to his hip and nice filling out of the butt and legs.
I have found adding fat is the best way to get weight on the top line. (the horses like it too! LOL).
GOOD JOB!!!!

My bad! I should have said I was going to slap him for being a boy that doesn't like horses.

Ribs might be sprung due to a parasite load or he may be resolving that.
OR he may be getting more athletic than you realize. When I met my husband, his mare was trim but by no means skinny. Big QH butt, round back, well muscled, trail hard, and yes you could just make out her ribs. There has never been anything skinny about her though.
OR you may be getting foled by a winter coat - it can make a butt look round when its not quite really.
OR he may be getting fat in a butt to front order - butt fills in first, then ribs, then shoulders and neck. This isn't uncommon.
Give him time, and make a true assessment after he loses all that fuzzily wuzzily hair
