I really don't like posting this type of personal information, but my family really needs some prayers right now. We are trying to remain strong, but the last two days have been devastating.

In March 2006, I lost my grandpa. Even since then, my grandma has been depressed and just not herself. Two days ago, my grandma came down with the flu. My mom called me and stated that she had normal symptoms and grandma was going to bed.

The next morning we tried calling my grandma and there was no answer. We called her neighbor and they went next door. She was in bed, just tired and weak. So we decided to have her go to the hospital to get fluids and to rest.

At the hospital they decided to admit her. It took over 12 hours to get a bed, by the time she finally got a room, she started to get worse and was having trouble breathing. To make things easier, they put her on oxygen.

Her condition continued to get worse. At 11:30 pm her condition got so bad they had to put her on a respirator. Finally after arguing with the nurses and doctors they FINALLY called in infections disease, a heart specialist and all the big name docs. I do not know why it took so long.

Yesterday they gave her basically 48 hours to live. They determined that the flu settled in her heart and caused her heart muscle to fail. It now has about 20% function, they have installed a central line, have sedated her and basically said to get family there if they would like to say goodbye.

It has been such a sad past few days. Family is now coming from out of town. We are doing our best to keep the Christmas spirit and remember the good times, but it is VERY HARD.

Grandma is not too old, acted just like anyone. She was in my work dropping off knitted winter scarfs just a week ago for us to sell in the store. She was fine.

If you can please pray for my family, and especially my mother I would greatly appreciate it. My mom is loosing her dad and mom in not even 12 months.

This is hard for all of us. Thank you for thinking of our family.

I am so very sorry, Matthew...I will pray for your Grandma and your family. I have heard of that happening before years ago to a young teacher in her forties. A fluke thing...but it happens. God bless...you are in my prayers.

Lots of prayers and good thoughts. A sister of a friend of mine was affected by the same virus in her thirties. She had two transplants. Not a comfort, but just that a virus can settle in the heart and cause very grave consequences. May your family enjoy peace in this troubling time.

I am so sorry. Your family will be in my prayers.

We lost my husbands mother a week ago to cancer. I know how hard it is to deal with something like this during what is supposed to be the most joyous time of the yr. ((((hugs))))

Matthew this is terrible news, any time. It would seem that she just really misses your grandpa, and hasn't got the desire to go through a christmas without him. This is a really sad time in cardiac and intensive care units, lots of folks that would really rather spend christmas with their departed beloveds. It sure doesn't make it any easier on the ones that are in no way ready to have such a holday marked by a passing.
Monday is the celebration of the birth of Our Lord, if your grandma decides to go to Him, then she's picked a reverant time. I pray the God wraps His arms around her, you, your family, and brings you peace and hope no matter what.

UPDATE:

Thank you everyone for your prayers. The past 18 hours have been very uplifting. It still just amazes me what the power of prayer, the human body and modern medicine can do.

My grandma is still in intensive care, however, around noon, she awoke and was able to start communicating with my mother via a pen and paper since she was still on a respirator and can not talk.

The doctors are still baffled and do not know exactly what the outcome of this will be, and what type of recovery she will be able to make. However, for now she is improving and for this my family is very thankful.

In addition, my mom's sister was also able to make the trip today and arrived from out of town. We are very thankful she was able to get a flight and be with her mom and her sister (my mom) during this time. It makes these tough times much easier when family is around.

Once again, THANK YOU for all of your prayers. It has been VERY HELPFUL to read all of your kind words during this time. The last several days have been a roller coaster and although we are still on this ride, it is very helpful to read your kind words.

Thank you again and please keep my family in your prayers.

Merry Christmas and God Bless!!!!!!!
