At my boarding stable the lady who owns it, some of the boarders, and my farrier tease me about my horses names. Do any of you get this too? The lady at the stable can't say Mayoral so she calls him Buddy, and Poeta has turned into Poe. She says they need simple names because she is a simple person lol. I say come on learn to say a new word, it won't hurt you! :D

No, most have barn names as did my Arabian. People would have thought I was crazy, hearing me yell, "I Am Alive" when I called him! I imagine, that the first time, the neighbors might have come to learn about my near-death experience.

My husband can't even pronounce the one's name. How can I expect others to do it? Most people just stare at me when they hear their full Spanish names. They're more than happy to call them by the barn names. Some horseman have asked what their barn names were.

Most have enjoyed learning their Spanish names and meanings. I tell I named the horse as I did. With the exception, they have stories attached to their names. The one exception was to describe a marking.

I'm sorry, but yes, if someone does not have the linguistic capacity to say the word "Mayoral", aside from having a real learning or physical disability, of course, they are simple. Not something I would personally point out about myself, if I were her.

Actually when he was at Helen Frost's stable her help couldn't say Mayoral either. Yes it's easy to say it pronounced english. But it is pronounced different in Spanish it's máe.ya.ral. Heck Helen had to teach me to say it, and I practiced it all the way home lol. But Poeta? It's just Poet with a "a" at the end, how hard is that? LOL

I was wondering about those names. Poeta really does seem simple. It's just another letter. I have some with 4 and 5 syllables for the first part of the name.

For the first time I have problems with people not being able to pronounce my horses name... and it is his barn name. I call him Michico, pretty simple in my oppinion, but not everyone thinks that. The most common is Chico, and I'll say "Oh, you mean Michico." ;-) Sooner or later I get everyone to prounounce his name too.

Yes.
But it is not just the Spanish names. When I got the last gelding I purchased...Fantasy's Shenanigan... no one could remember his name. My mother called him Chandelier.
The horses I have now have nicknames or shortened versions of their real names that are easy for everyone.

Yep, all mine have nicknames....and they change, depending on what we/they are doing at the time or did recent...

Sweetheart
Missy
Prissy
Goodboy

often gives way to

PeaBrain
Muttonhead
PigPen
Monkeybutt (that's Rosie's)
QueenSh!t (Zar)

My favorites are the anouncers at Open shows...often can't get the breed right PaySo FeeNos or PaaSer FeeNers - you get the idea!

Shoooott I don't even call them by their registered names. I do have fun at horse shows with Two (Contrados de Poker). When I register I allways try to get a number like 2, 22, 222, and I list his name as Two. the show secretary goes "WHAT" I then tell her she can put his real name if she prefers, Contrados de Poker. They allways reply "Two it is". And then the fun begins with the announcer. " And taking first place is 222 on Two" "HUUUHHHH"

Well, Mom's mare is named pretty simple...Candee...that's what it says on her papers.

Now Tequila...well, his name is really Tempestuoso Capuchino. (a mouthful-9 syllables.) I named him Tequila because if you weren't careful you'd find your a$$ laid out on the ground wondering what hit you. Sometimes I just call him T for short since it fits both his real name and barn name.

We named Echo, Echo de Classico. But most of the time I call him BRAT or Butthead.

We don't use their proper names either. Ladybug is Orgullos Dama translates to "Proud Lady" which fits her. She is a red dun, so the Ladybug comes from her color. Lightningbug is La Sorpresa de Mariquita translates to Ladybug's Surprise. Which fits since we did not know that Ladybug was expecting, so, Surprise  And Lightningbug came from the time of year she was born, July, Lightningbug's were out and it stormed that night, plus Ladybug=Lightningbug, stick with the "bug" thing ;-) So know one has too mcuh trouble, except when we call Lightningbug "Baby" or Bumpkin ( have no idea where that came from) just a nickname.

It doesn't matter WHAT I name a horse, someone always calls it "a fag name". It's my area, it's the mentality of the people by which I'm surrounded, and it's ingrained that all horses should be named Duke, Buck, Lady, Princess, Rebel, and so forth.

Creativity is discouraged sometimes, and it's very hurtful and disheartening when all you want to do is bestow a worthy name upon a worthy friend.

(It's been a shitty day.)

Among the many cool things about living in New Mexico is that nearly everyone speaks Spanish. Most of my neighbors have English as the second language...... they all grew up speaking Spanish and their English is liberally sprinkled with Spanish words. So when I tell them my mare's name is Amapola, not only do they not make fun of it, they know what it means. ("Poppy", most likely she was named that because she is a very red chestnut.) Most of my neighbors are not familiar with Paso Finos, but if you talk to the older people they will tell you about "andadura" horses they used to ride as kids. I guess those horses are all gone from the area now.

Now, my Anglo friends sometimes have a tough time with the Spanish words, but since they live here most of them at least try to speak the words correctly. Our valley and river and so on all have Spanish names. I wince when I hear them pronounce Cebolla "Say-Bowl-uh" but they do try.

Everyone who's into horse here speak spanish either as a native language or just know spanish seeing as all the trainers speak spanish, and they are all used to spanish names allready, no problem there. However Marinero did get called Marinera a few times by the farrier because once he came to shoe him and I just braided his mane with color elastics and he said that geldings shouldn't have that. But he stopped with it after a few weeks

These are the names of all the other horses at my boarding stable.
Star.. Arabian
Fancy.. Quarterhorse
Bill.. Fell Pony
Patches.. Spotted Saddle Horse
Prince.. Arabian
Dolly.. Saddlebred
Blaze.. Quarterhorse

I don't like cowpony names, like all the others I like unique names for my unique horses. :D I guess I'll just put up with all the teasing lol.

Oh and by the way I also don't use my horses full registered names to call them by of course. I just call them Poeta and Mayoral.

Monty

Monty is the barn name and most people aren't aware there is another name unless I tell them or someone makes a comment. Montenero Animado = Animated Mountainman.
And no one here can tease about the name ! Onna Fire (on a fire)Percheon mare,Terynron ( Celtic) aka JR( got that name when he was a foal because he raced around like Dale Earnhart JR)! And Cody BLM Mustang.
Other family's horses are Buddie = Native Illusion ( App),Dewie(App sometimes called Dewbert!) and Silver = Silverado - SIL names every animal after Chevy products !
