Yesterday we trimmed the feet of one of our horses. Back feet had grown pretty long. She seemed like she was a bit under the weather, almost like she was colicing but not seriously. Gave banamine. Brushed her worked on her mane and relocated her closer to the house.

She seemed to be fine all night and all day today. Went to Inverness to the dance and i went to check as I usually do before coming inside. I went into her pen. She seemed ok maybe a bit jittery. I chalked it up to me coming into her pen in the dark. But then I noticed she was going to lay down with me there.

Not normal! Brought her out observed her. Offered her feww peices of feed. She was kicking at her stomach so we have given banamine.

But the kicker is , her stool was fine normal firm and moist, no diareah. This evening i noticed soupy diarrea,

Question? would giving her the banamine cause that. Ellis is walkign her now. and the temp is dropping so i had better go relive him.

Like usual i kow some remedies but in an on the spot situation they escape me so what I need to know is what are some of the things to do to relieve diarrea?

Will check back after walking her for a few. Don't think I need a vet just yet but will be watching her close. Long night ahead.

Jasper had diareah and a mild stomach ache a few yrs back. I called our vet and they said to give him Pepto Bismol. I really cant remember the dosage now that they told me to use.

Is there a front coming through? We noticed symptoms like that with a couple of ours.. and I contribute it now to worms. After we gave them a round of pancure, we've had no more episodes of the mild colics... (knock on wood)

Prayers coming from Ky.

why not at least call the vet and talk to THEM..that way they will have you in their radar..so if she does start to crash and burn they might get there quicker..plus if there is something going around in your area they will know and could possibly head off something...

I agree with Sheri - Call the vet and talk to them! They may wanna come out and it might be worth it to let them.

Also you wanna keep fluids in her. Take a big syringe and mix water and electro lites and start pumping them in. Chances are there must be an inflamation some where in the intestines. A tube of probiotics might help. You could try some Apple Cider Vinegar. a couple oz in the water you are pumping in. When my mom was having similar stomach issues, she drank some and felt better quickly. These are just ideas, I am not saying you should try everything all at once.

But the fluids are the most important. If she get dehydrated because of the diahrrea you could then end up with an impaction.

When Mico was sick with colitis and at the vet hospital, all they really did for him was to pump fluids in using IVs and keep giving him banamine for the pain. They only offered him alittle hay to much on, nothing else. It took 10 days (he ws very sick) and he lost a lot of weight, but he came around.

Abejita & Terri I guess I forgot to mention I did call the vet and at the time of my post she had not returned my call. She finally called back around 2 am didn't sound happy . Since vet said it was ok to, I did worm her and she has plenty of fresh water. I also gave her some probios. But I did forget about the electrolytes and am going to do that right now.

By 4 am she had seemed calm and had a couple solid poops by 5 am so that is a good thing.

I did not make myself clear that i was asking for suggestions while waiting to hear from the vet. I told her all I had already done and she said I had done everythign so far other than oiling and she said we could wait unless she got worse.

i put her in the yard area next to my bedroom and i have a door directly out of the house so i can be inside now and watch her at the same time .

I was simply asking for suggestions while waiting. She paces a lot and after a quick check just now another solid pile in a different location and i say that because the first two are gone. She paces and therefore breaks them up. That is the way she does in a pen away from other horses. So seems her piles stay broken up. A good thing unless I am trying to watch them, :)

Kaopectate works wonders for diarrhea...I gave it to my colt for six weeks when he was young. I use the caplets and crush it into their grain with a little molasses and brown sugar.
Your mare was colicing, Leila...but it sounds like she is on the mend now that her poop is normal. If nothing's changed such as feed or hay or quality of your hay (good hay is so hard to find this time of year) I'd attribute it to lack of drinking water...or a change in the weather. If this weather we're having here has hit you yet...that could be a result. I am amazed that none of mine have coliced....yet. I'm heavily salting their grain, and keeping those water buckets clean and the ice broken.
Good luck...hope she's ok by this time.

There are many reasons a horse can have a mild case of colic. It isn't always an impaction. So, they'll poop fine. I've never heard of banamine giving them diarehea, but many horses will get loose when they're stressed. That is not abnormal.

Sounds to me like you did everything right. I don't think oilling her will do anything. That only helps with impactions. I've had horses get a spasmatic colic, where muscles spasm and cause it. The vet can administer a relaxant and end it.

Keep an eye on her. She may be over it fine now. Many times - actually MOST of the time - you never do learn what causes it.

I just had one do something really similar Leila. Just a mild colic. I gave her banamine and made her skip dinner and she was fine the next day. I attribute it to the weather - it went from mid-40's to 75 back down to mid-30's. I had several get really sweaty and uncomfortable when it got so warm and then the temps dropped so fast. It's a bad time for colics when the weather is crazy.

Have to ask how much pepto do you give them ? The last time Venus coliced - (they thought it was gastric ulcers but had to put her down 5 days later due to liver failure) - they gave her 660 cc's of pepto ! It did work - but ,that is a lot to get into a horse ! Tubed her -
She also had banamine .
And a change in the weather came bring on colic in some horses .

heheh tell your vet that if she wasnt happy about a 2 am call then she should have choosen another profession ...

Oh you are right Liela, I didn't realize you had called her. And Sheri is right again, 2 AM colic calls is part of the profession. That is why they get the big bucks! :D

It sounds like she is doing better. You take good care of your animals. There are some people who probably wouldn't have even noticed a problem till it was real bad. Good for you for knowing your horse so well.

When Nieve developed the runs for an unknown reason my vet had me give her Pepto 2 x per day for about 7 days. We (read my husband) gave her a whole bottle at a time.

Now that I think about it that is when she went from sweet to a holy terror about medication.

She allows my husband to do anything to her with a nominal fight, but anyone else does so at their own risk.

I cant really remember the dosage exactly.. but I do know that my mom gave her filly about a cup once... and she took it well.

Jasper.. was another story altogether. ;-)
