View Full Version : Lois York in a VERY bad accident - UPDATE
Barbwire

I got a call just now from Laura York, Lois York's mother. Sunday night, Lois and her daughter Meghan were in an accident with their truck. Laura told me that neither one of them had their coats on and Meghan was on the road for over 45 minutes in the cold until help came. They are both in intensive care now.
Lois had a severe head injury and her arm is badly damaged. She will have surgery today to do some grafting on the arm. She was on a ventilator, but is off of it now.
Meghan is still on a ventilator and will also have surgery today. Her back is in pretty bad shape.
Laura has requested that if anyone wants to phone her, they should call after 10 PM. Please PM me for her phone number. She is over 3 1/2 hours from the hospitals that Lois and Meghan are in, and she will not be able to see them until Saturday.
Please keep the York's in your thoughts and prayers and offer them all the positive energy you have to spare. They are in for a long recovery, and they are going to need it.

I just got off the phone with Laura. She wanted me to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers and wishes everyone a Happy New Year. She will call me tomorrow with the addresses for the hospitals that Lois and Meghan are in.
Meghan was in surgery from 9:00 am - 6:15 PM today. Her left arm was broken, and she had two pins put in it. Bone was removed from her pelvis to fuse bones in her back. Vertebrae 9, 8, 7, 6 and 5 were broken, but her spinal cord was not severed. The doctors do no expect her to walk. She is still on a ventilator, but is expected to be off by the weekend.
Lois went into surgery tonight a 8:00 pm and is still in there. She has no broken bones, but he head injury is bad and she had to have parts of her face stitched and glued back together. Her right arm was so swollen from being pinned under the steering wheel, that incisions had to be made to relieve it. Her left forearm had quite a bit of skin removed, and the doctors are doing skin grafts on it. The rescue workers had to use the jaws of life to get her out of the truck. Meghan was found under the truck.
Lois' head injury has left her in and out of consciousness and she still does not know about Meghan. She has no feeling in her fingers, but they don't know if that will improve once the swelling has gone down.
Laura told me that the kids at Meghan's school, as well as other schools in the area are raising money for her, and her mother's bills.
Please keep praying and thinking about the York family. They are wonderful people and really need all the support they can get.
Heidi

[b]I also got off the phone with Miss Laura. I got much the same info Barb did and the only other thing to add is, they were not wearing coats which in Megans case could have been a good thing.
after losing control on a loose gravel country road, hitting a culvert and flipping, it seems that when the truck finally came to a rest upright. Megan slide down the bank under the truck and was underneath it. A Positive, warmth from motor helped but at the same time the cold from the ground kept Megans back chilled enough to cause less swelling.
Lois was in side and had to be cut with jaws if life as her arm was pinned but no broken bones.
accident happened around 7-8 pm and they were not found for 45 minutes when a farmer went to investigate lights in his pasture.
she also said she would call back with address info.
Lois is at Ottowa Civic Hospital and Megan is at CHEO aka Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ottawa. Miss Laura says she has set times to call about 6 times per day.[b]

Talked to Laura this morning. She has been calling the hospital(s) every 4 hours and had just got off the phone at 6am when we spoke. There is really no change in either Lois or Megan’s conditions. They did do surgery on Lois’ left arm last night. There will more surgery and grafts later on. The head injury is the problem. She has not been totally conscious since the accident. Megan is being kept in a controlled coma until they can fully access the back injury. Lowest vertebra is C-9 there is damage to others, but the spinal cord is NOT severed – good news.
As it stands right now, Laura is going to see both girls on Saturday and Sunday. Bear in mind that Laura’s 88 year old mother lives with her. She also has to work for a living and things are most likely tight financially, so this is an extra whammy she did not need. Laura will talk with Lois’ Aunt Vicki, who is “on the ground” at the hospital and lives 10 minutes from Lois and Megan (Laura is 3.5 hours away). Laura will find out what is needed and relay this to me Sunday evening. Until then, flowers, etc are really of no use because neither Lois or Megan can benefit, so we will sit tight until further notice.
If any of you would like Laura’s phone number or address, please PM me.
This is a mother’s (and grandmother’s) worst nightmare.

Well, the news on the spinal cord is great. She will still have a lot of problems with the fuzed vertebre, but at least all her bodily funcitions will continue to function. Thank God for this!!!
As for Lois, only time will tell on her head injury. The brain does have some recuperative abilities and can change pathways (especially women's brains). Also, once the swelling goes down, they should have a better idea how much real damage there is.
I'll keep praying for both of them. Lois especially, head injuries can be very life altering.

How awful, I wonder how she got thrown from the truck? Seatbelt malfunction??? A dear friend of mine was in a car accident, they still don't know how it happened, but she went off the road and struck a HOUSE head on with her old volvo sedan...suffered a terrible head injury...she was in a coma for 6 weeks...Dr.s said there was no brain activity...we brought her stuff she could smell, and her husband, who is a musician, played songs for her...I took a pillowcase and stuffed it full of 'slightly soiled' hay from my stall and brought that to her too...she loved her horses so...one day one of the nurses noticed she was doing this funny movement with her hands..they thought it was some kind of spasm...she continued to do the same action for a couple weeks...we would visit her and see her doing that movement, and one day one of my friends and I were sitting there and my other friend said, 'you know what???'...'I think she's riding...see she is holding the reins!'...
Dr.s didn't think she would come out of the coma and they were on the verge of transferring her to a facility that cares for these kinds of injuries...
and she woke up..
After a couple more weeks in the hospital on the road, finally, to recovery, we told her about the weeks we came to see her in her coma, and told her about the movement with her hands...'I was riding my horse' she said....
She suffered some nerve damage and went through months of therapy and although she still walks with a noticeable limp she can still ride her horse.(she has a 'mounting stairway' to get on her 16h Morgan/Belgian gelding and he stands there as still as stone while she gets on him...)
There is hope for head injuries!!!

Please do not send flowers without checking! I've had to take flowers home from ICU with the patient unable to enjoy them. The nurse only showed them outside the door a moment. With family members spending free time at the hospital, the flowers just died without much enjoyment by anyone. Thoughts and support mean so much at that time though!
Of course, I'm praying for the family. I'll try to get information on contacting Laura. She cretainly needs all the support, that she can get.

Thank you to the ones that are in contact. I know from personal experience that it is nice to have a network that spreads the word, so the family isn't having to deal with 500 calls to find out whats going on.
Cards would be something that would be very supportive for both of them, and the family as well and can be viewed when the time is right. I pray that they will be recovering at Gods speed.

Spoke to Denise Boorman today and Laura last night.
Meghan is 12 years old. Today they are going to try to get her off the respirator. They are also going ot remove the feeding tube.
Lois knows Laura and one of her sons. At this point she stil has no recollection of many things recent. Knows nothing of Meghan either and they are not mentioning that for now.
Miss Laura has requested that I work with Denise on the funds if anyone chooses to help out. Much needed. Denise works for a bank and arranging things on that end. I will be opening a paypal acount from this end that way if anyone wishes to help they can. Then I will notify Denise once a week and send whatever is there.
As soon as I have the account set up I will post the information. I will be gone till sunday night so it should be set up no later than Tuesday I hope.

UPDATE - Saturday, January 27 10AM:
Just spoke with Laura York this morning. She is hanging in there.
There has been some excellent progress with Lois. She is walking around, able to converse, is comprehending very well considering her head injury. Her arm is doing great – she can move all fingers. It’s her left arm and Lois is left-handed, so she will work extra hard in re-hab to get mobility. She will be moving to a re-hab hospital this coming week if there are no set-backs. In the next few days she will be able to visit Megan (in another hospital).
Megan is being weaned off her pain medication. They had to do surgery (again) on her arm last night, but she is doing well. Laura told me that she and Megan had an actual phone conversation! Megan is surrounded with pictures of her family, friends, and of course her horses. The prognosis is Megan will not walk, but miracles do happen and now that Megan is conscious her doctors will be better able to access her condition.
Laura tells me Denise (in Canada) and Leila in FL are working on a plan to get an account going for Lois and Megan so that we can send contributions. Thank you ladies for getting this sorted out.
Laura wanted me to make a point to thank you all for your cards, calls, and prayers. She says she will wait to have her nervous breakdown later at a more convenient time! LOL

Good question Sandy. I was wondering the same thing. If it depended on the employer, was a government program or a combination or none of the above???

Without the usual income, a person can go into debt or bankruptcy. Of course, there may be cheaper housing, but how are they supposed to pack and move in ill or injured conditions? Loved ones may also go into debt, trying to help with finances to take some of the load off the patient to help the person to concentrate on healing. Additionally, the emotional toll may hinder making the best economical decisions.

Yes, but THANK GOD it is one less thing to worry about! I have good friends who lost everything -house, cars, savings for son's college, years of vacation time - to medical bills. They went bankrupt and live in a trailer court now.

Motor - I will ask Laura next time I talk with her, I DO know that the day AFTER the accident the hospital hand made a reservation (Laura's word) for Lois at the re-hab facility. Apparently the Canada system prepares in advance for these things. I do know that if Lois OR Megan for that matter, were in hospital here in the US they would have been out on their ear by now. Their system seems much more obliging. Early release from hospital is sometimes bad, but sometimes good, too. It just depends on the support system waiting at home. Also, Laura mentioned that both Lois and Megan are getting psychological counseling while in hospital. Just try requesting THAT while laying in bed here in the states. Do ya think your insurance companies plan for that contingency? Not!
Andres V
01-28-2007, 08:11 PM
I ask a friend from Canada - it is a disability pension plan from government. Not have to fight like with Social Security and is not for employer. Little girl will be disability pension probably all of life. Is not a time or expense limit for medical care. It is good that most expense will not bankrupt family. And God speed for recovering.

That is really good to hear. During a time when you're having to deal with catastropic injury the last thing in the world people need to worry about is finances.

Please be aware, that a person can still go bankrupt with disability in the USA. It is not enough at that time. I hope, that they get better. If the Canadian system takes care of everything, They may need a trip away besides the phychological help. Things this catestophic can bother a person for years to some extent.
As for early dismissal from the hospital, please talk with your doctor if you feel, that you or a loved one needs more care! I know of a case, that the doctor refused to release the patient when the insurance company wanted him to do so. The patient would not be alive today without his refusal, and the insurance company paid.

Update from Laura (via Denise Boorman)
Quote:
An Update on Lois and Meghan - the accident.
Both Lois and Meghan are recovering slowly but everything is proceeding as well as can be expected. Lois has shown some memory damage and will be having psychological care for a year or two. Her arms and hands are beginning to heal and the physiotherapy has yet to begin. Meghan sadly is paralyzed from the waist down and likely has some memory damage. She will need full time care but is bright and speaking to Laura on the phone. The other day Meghan watched a movie involving a horse and she was able to tell Laura the color of the horse. This was wonderful for Laura to hear. Both Lois and Meghan remain in hospital in Ottawa and Laura is receiving volumes of assistance from the Social Workers and Psychologists. They all have the very best of care and we know this is a long, long road to a recovery, but Laura is very happy about the positive turnarounds of the past few days. Laura wishes to thank each and every one of you for your caring and positive thoughts. She cannot express enough of her friendships of the past 30 years - other than to say, "Thank you so very much, everyone." Take care all of you and thank you also from me, Denise Boorman.

Thank you for posting the update, Camilla. The Yorks are lucky to have a friend such as you during this difficult time; keep up the good work.
Leila, thank you so much for all you are doing, especially for making it possible for people to make donations via your Paypal account. I know my donation wasn't much, but I hope that it, combined with the donations from other people here on the board, can help in some small way.

The last I heard is Lois is out of the hospital and Meghan is still in. Meghan's back is still being evaluated to see if she will be able to function at all. The arm she injured is doing quite well and is almost completley healed.

A she spoke with Lois on the phone and here is what i got
Lois is awake, alert, and very much 'with it'. We had a perfectly normal conversation and she remembers everything leading up to the accident, but not the accident itself. She said she remembers coming round the corner and thinking 'shoot, that's glare ice". John found the truck. She goes out to visit Meghan every day, and she is learning how to use the wheelchair and to take care of her daily needs. She will likely be in hospital a couple more months, but already they are all (with their grandpa's help) planning on getting back to the horses asap. John is at home looking after things there and is with her quite a bit.
Lois is undergoing physical therapy on her hand, she said she banged her head up pretty good and they stapled her back together, had a graph taken from her leg to cover her arm, she said the leg hurts worse than the arm. She is getting anxious to go home but they've told her she still needs her head to heal from the staples and to get her fingers working again properly, but it is very encouraging. I told her she picked a hellova way to get out of doing horse chores..lol. I'm heading back in June for a visit and she said we'll have our tea, I said I'll bring the rye instead and she said 'now THAT's more like it"..lol.e is her update

My Mom had to have a skin graft after a surgery, and she said the same thing - the area on her leg where the graft was taken from hurt more than the surgery site......
I'm really glad to hear that everyone' spirits are up, and that everyone seems to be progressing. There is nothing better than Hippotherapy!!! I'm sure everyone will be glad to get back to the horses!
