I really think that the American Paso Fino would sound as silly as the American Arabian, or American Shetland, or any other breed that you can name. We do have American Bred Paso Finos, and we have tried to breed them to fit our needs and likes more than they would have in their country of origin but they are still Paso Finos. We have americanized almost everything that we get our hands on but a Taco is still a Taco not an American Taco just because we may make it a little different than when it was first discovered in its country of origin.

I am not sure on this one. yes I feel my horses are "American" Paso Finos, they are all bred and born on this continent, however most are Columbian, but are not listed anywhere as Paso Columbiano, and today I am not sure what the distinction is except on paper..
Some would argue that there are P. Finos, P. Columbiano, P. Trocha, and we might as well include the Peruvians too as they ARE "pasos" ut have diverged in a distinct faction due to gait execution style (termino) and were bred primarily in a specific area. Well so were P. Columbianos, and if one wants to split hairs, the true P. Fino is the PPR horse even though the corto is exhibited by many horses that would for reasons of heritage fall under another category, including "American".
I think we miss a point: these horses, no matter what country of origin, are about family. Its an extended family, and all parts are important, none are completely separate. I believe the vitality of this whole breed of horse depends on diversity set off with some areas of specialization. We will always have fino-fino horses, corto horses, largo horses, horses that do all three, trocha horses. I think what makes it difficult, on reflection, is the American attempt to be inclusive and exclusive at the same time. We can't survive this dualistic idealism. It would be better to start with trocha classes in the shows (yeah I can hear the "we already have too many classes" folks hollering now!) or to even have events geared to the trocha horse. We could accomodate the number of classes issues by cutting out the 3 year old schooling classes, and since Pleasure and Country Pleasure, and even Western and trail do not even require bits, why have schooling classes in these areas anyway? Why not just start the classes with a 4 year minimum age? That would open up the time slots for trocha, and I really think that if we included these horses on the show level instead of paying lip service to corto and pinning trocha the playing field woud level. Trainers would feel less pressured to make a horse something it isn't, and we would gain more in the public eye for finding a really great solution to the issues that make us look so incongruent to outsiders (and even to some insiders).
As far as using "American" to denote a pleasure horse, or give them somewhere to "fit in" c'mon. Do we need that? We already have the classes, they just need the notoriety and esteem. We already have programs for the non-show horses. They are under utilized! Besides, what would one base "American" on? If it would be truly representative of teh melting pot ideals of being American, then only mixed Col/PR horses would be eligible. If its based on corto and no trocha, then you will stillhave people trying to turn trocha in to corto at the expense of the horse. If you base it on the pleasure aspects, its a moot point - there are already venues in place.
ie: AQHA does not have separate breed distinctions or origin distinctions for different phenotypes within the breed, nor for different disciplines - they are all quarter horses, no? And how many millions are there?

All paso finos are American except those born in Germany or something and they are all American origin so it seems a bit redundant. PR pasos are American, Colombian pasos are American, and all the others too. Made in America! Gotta love 'em!
