I was looking for some geneology info, and did a web search. Interesting or not, I found out our US President George W Bush is related (distantly 12 generations back) ... to John Gallop (our original US ancestor who arrived in 1630), and Emily Dickerson -- the poet, is related to John Gallop 9 generations back.
Surprisingly I thought George W. bore a resemblance to my Dad in the face, before I knew this info. haha. I'll have to take a look at Emily Dickerson's pic now.
haha. Now wait until I tell my dad...who is a devout Republican.
here's the generic generology website home: http://www.rootsweb.com/

Not myself...but my husband is related to Mary Queen of Scotts and William Wallace that Mel Gibson played in Great Heart.
My mother-in-law is a "geneologist" and has volumes on the family history.

Harry Houdini was my paternal grandfather's cousin. The English pirate Sawkins was a pain in the neck to the Spanish Armada and was hung, was also a paternal relative in the family tree. Lastly, my paternal grandma's uncle ran with a bad crowd of Romanys (gypsies) and was hung for being a horse thief  Don't know much about my maternal side.

I have been researching my genealogy for a few years now (here's a hint for those who want to start tracing..Newspapers..I got lucky that my teeny tiny small town of New Oxford PA has many of the newspapers from its early history forward online- Filled in MANY blanks for me)
I am not really related to anyone 'famous' I guess the most would be my Hochwalt ancestors (Dayton OH area)
Albert Hochwalt wrote many book on hunting dogs (AF Hochwalt)
Another Hochwalt was one of the scientists that was involved with the beginnings of Monsanto (sp?)Labs and there was another, Monsignor Frederick Hochwalt that was involved in Maryknoll and wrote articles on religion in education..
I have found many interesting stories and 'skeletons'
My G-G Grandmother was illegitimate He 'father' instead of marrying the woman he got in trouble ran off to the gold rush of 1849
My grandfather and grandmother were well known for their 'bathtub gin' I remember many stories of parties and the like...
Found quite a few civil war veterans
Other ohio relatives were very much involved w/the pre -prohibition brewerys ..
It is so fun to run across a tidbit doing research..

On mother's side - related to John Glenn, the astronaut; Devil Anse Hatfield (Hatfield and McCoys); and Capt. Andrew Hatfield (revolutionary War); Bob Barr (Congressman)
On my dad's side - he was one of 5 brothers - who was one of 5 brotherss - who was one of 5 brothers whose dad dropped them off along the Ohio River (according to family history) - hoping some of them would escape hanging for horse stealing and cattle rustling....

The only ones I could find of any note were Charles Dickens (the writer) on my dad's side and Trent Lott (the politician) on my mom's side. But my mom's father's grandfather sounds interesting...according to family history, he discovered that his son-in-law (my great-grandfather) was cheating on his daughter (my great-grandma) and planning to leave her so he tracked him down and shot him dead! She was pregnant with my grandfather at the time. I remind my mom of this when she accuses me of having a bad temper..."I get it from your side of the family, you know!"

If you want to look up your geneology, come to Utah!!! I'll plant you in the Geneology Library and you can find all you never wanted to know. LOL Seriously though, the Mormons have researched family trees back to before the Pilgrims. Whenever your family croses with one of their families, the ancestors are all traced for you.
Having Mormons in my family (mother's side) that side is all researched. Goes back to CPT John Jamison who was George Washington's physician. My aunt did my father's side, which goes to Thomas Nudell, who was hung in New York (probably by the same people who hung Sally's forefathers!) for being a Tory spy. My father's family was awarded land along he St. Lawrence river in Canada for their loyalty to the crown, and then traveled across Canada to settle eventually in British Columbia.
I also have relatives who fought on both sides of the civil war.

Also related to Roger Conant, founder of Salem. Mother has traced us back to a Norman Duke in 1066. Probably a conquerer's child resulting from a 'victory celebration' with a reluctant female participant-?...
Not a famous person, but my grandfather and his family missed their ship to America. The ship they missed was the Titanic.
Smithsonian has their boarding passes that mother and her brothers found in the attic of grandparents house after they passed away.

I know on my dad's side we are related to Meriwether Lewis...the Lewis of Louis and Clark.
My mom's family is from Sweden and on her side we are related to the Viking Eric the Red.
My dad's cousin is Lee Meriwether the actress. She was Batwoman in the old series.

From the reasearch I did several years ago I am related to Nathan Evans who was a general in the Confederate Army and his brother Robert Evans who was a surveyor in the Union Army. Talk about splitting up families and brother against brother.
My grandfather was from Wales and was a coal miner
Both my parents were born in USA
Anymore that that I'm not really interested because none ofem are alive anyway that I can talk with. :(

Yeah ... well ... as an adoptee and (now) an orphan, there's just not all that much to say. I do remember, though, as a child being quite put off by all the talk of my ancestors. (My adopted quadruple great grandfather was the first white man to sail down the Ottawa River, and the man who founded the City of Hull, PQ.) At quite a young age I distinctly remember thinking, "But they aren't MY ancestors!"
Since then I've discovered that there is both English and (some) native Indian blood in the veins of this green eyed red head.

Hey Bob - what part of Wales was your Grandfather from? My mother's father was a coal miner in Wales before they came to America. We have some cool old pictures of him with pit ponies and lots of other dirty men. The stories my mom tells about mining are unbelieveable. His last name was Edwards.

That's too weird Sally, my great grandfather was Welch, a coal miner too. He discoverd coal in Utah and went to Whales and converted several thousand Welch immigrants to Mormonism and brought them to Utah to work the mines. Several towns in Utah, inlcuding "Wales" was founded by him.
<snip>
My mom's family is from Sweden and on her side we are related to the Viking Eric the Red.
<snip>
Sweden doesn't have registers that far back... Sweden (and Norway and Denmark too) started their registers of born and dead in the early 16 hundreds (1608 in Sweden if I remember right)
I'm 100% Swedish, (with a tad of Same LOL) my uncle followed our history back until late 16 hundreds when a relative was caught steeling the church silver on a trip to Finland. My uncle decided that we might not want to know the rest. LOL

Elaine,
we are a family of toeheads (not unusual in Utah). What is unusual is that we are Irish, English, Scottish, Welch, and Cherokee. Sooooo, where did the blond(e) come from? We attribute it to Northern European rape and pillage! What do you think? LOL
Considering the fact that in the larger viking trading places in Sweden we have found an abundant of certain British coins that are very rare on the British isles, I'd say it's a pretty good chance. LOL

Not related to anybody famous that I know of, but my maternal great great grandfather and his brother fought at Petersburg Va for the South. After the war, they started walking home to NC, met a couple of girls in Smithfield VA, married and settled down, my great grandfather becoming a 'wheelwright' according to the census.

on my mom's side I am related to Martha Washington (Custis) but her and George had no children, she was a widow when they married. We also have some Confederate commanding officers/Generals in our family Bible. I'd have to see it to remember the names. It is with my mom or one of my sisters.
