very cool, I sent the link to some of my barn kids to demonstate that you don't have to rely on the reins to communicate with your horse (ie, yank on the mouth!).

Maybe someone still has the bookmark, but there is girl who does Feestyle without a bridle on her horse at all.
Have you thought about dealing with this a different way, getting in a clinician to teach them leg and weight cues? I find most horses (well, Pasos anyway) learn them in 3-4 tries. Then work on them with the kids, then have some contests with the reins laying on the neck, like distance backing without reins, or serpentines without them. I think the kids will find it fun....and the horses will thank you.

Those are the kind of things we have been doing, particularly in the round pen. I just want them to see the finished product and that it can be done!
I also have a big dopey qrt horse that the minute you drop your reins, he drops his head and saunters back to the barn - 10 year olds have a hard time turning his bulk around. We are working on that and I see huge improvement.
And then there is the Hilaches bred Paso who waits for the opporunity to take advange of a young rider focusing on seat and legs, to go from zero to sixty in 1.3 seconds. We are working on that too. :D

I saw that article in some magazine with the bridleless reining. It was amazing.

Interesting moments? yes, but it does teach them to keep their heels down.

Ok, so I clicked on the link and started to watch the video, but something on the right hand side of the page caught my eye, and I clicked on it right way, and did not watch the rest of the reining demo.
This is what lured my away from watching the horse  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2IoNygc-K0

The spit art or the reining?
Two words I'd never expected together spit and art
