I have yet another story on Apache and his role with Cuentas Claras.
Rafael Arbelo, Pepe Lopez (owner of Aramagedo), and Wilfredo Bertron were on a 3-way conference call. Pepe asked Bertran about Apache and Conquistador as sire of Serpentina. http://www.tesiopower.com/pf/sixgen.aspx?hID=9456. Pepe was interested because he has several excellent breeding stock from the Cuentas Clara lines.
The story:
Apparently the owner of Esperanza wanted the mare bred to Conquistador. Now Bertran and Escalera were friends so Escalera thought Bertran would have no problems with using Conquistador with his mare. However Bertran claims he never used his pinto horses for breeding with good paso mares. He insisted to Pepe that he only used his pintos for fun and pleasure and never to breed paso finos. So, without telling his friend, he served Esperanza with his stallion Cibuco.
I asked Pepe if Escalera was ever told of the deception, and he didn't believe so because as anyone can see, the mare Serpentina was registered with Conquistador not Cibuco as the sire. However, Bertran insists he never bred Conquistador to Esperanza.
I've asked that this be confirmed in some way and we are working on that. However, I'll admit that I believe this story for a several reasons. First, Bertran would have gone against ALL beliefs about pinto horses in that time period. Second, Bertran was very traditional in his views and never considered his pintos as paso horses but more as a pleasure type pet; I was astonished that he would go against his own beliefs. Third, pintos were not registered in the Federation stud book until the Ramey folks started falsifying pedigrees when importing horses to the USA. Fourth, Apache is not "active" in the paso fino pedigrees with the exception of Cuentas Claras and Ramey horses; his influence disappeared abruptly as do the pinto genetics indicating false pedigrees. The last pattern is typical when papers are falsified.
So, once again, the mystery with Cuentas Claras continues.
