Judi and I went to the meeting of our local chapter of Backcountry Horsemen tonight and joined. It is more then a trail riding group, they do service projects to keep trails open, marked, and mapped. They improve campgrounds and camp sights, and have a big educational program to teach people how to use the wild lands wisely and not harm them. They also help organize letters and campaigns for the Right to Ride.
Here is the national website. There are 17 state chapters, and then people can join at large.

But, you don't have to be a member to learn. Go to the Resources page. There are some real nice pamplets and books there.
They have two rides/month planned in our county. I'm really looking forward to some nice local rides. A lot of 'old timers' in this group to learn from too.
