True-step: Miss Lukka is on my list. She has been naughty lately.

She has got into this habit of pawing when I am feeding. Everyone is haltered and tied up in their spots, then I bring the grain for everyone. She paws during this time and I HATE pawing horses. So...she gets her hobbles on with her halter. She knows immediately that she cannot paw. I am hoping to break her of this because it is one of my very most pet peeves. I DO have another training technique that I will use if she does not catch on quick like.

Ooooh, ooh.....Is it called, "selling her to Abbie"? That's a good technique...I think you should definetely use that one. ;-)

Please don't tell me anymore naughty Lukka stories...it only makes me want to hunt her down and steal her in the night.....I LOVE the naughty ones!

Hello, is that a freeze or firebrand? I just freeze branded all my Paso's, mini herefords and donkeys. Its something I have been wanting to do for years and finally had the brands made.
What made you brand?
Tammi

Tammi - yep it's a freeze brand.

What made me brand? Because I could, I guess. First, I got my brand registered in NYS (number 49 BTW). We don't have a whole lot of horse russelin' in NY, but it DOES happen. Since meat prices dropped, you can't give them away, but that's another story.

I was concerened about the NAIS and thought I would get ahead of the game.

I think I may have to re-brand a couple of my horses because they are not looking "right". I am waiting for the animals to shed and then see who needs another shot. First time for freeze branding so I expected a learning curve.

I think its great! I've wanted to do it for a while now, but can't think up a design....
Soon though....

Did you do this yourself Beth?

Candice - My husband helped. Michael is not a horse person (or cowboy) but he offered and I took him up on the offer. I did the prep, e.g. clipping shaving the brand site. Then I did the "restraining" while he did the actual branding - holding the iron on the horse. THinking the animals would require more attention than the actually branding. The second time around I will not need his assistance because the darn horses wiggled more when I clipped them than when the brand was on them. There is no sizzle or smell of burning hair, etc. The horses did not even flinch. You are supposed to apply with approx 35 lbs of pressure and a gentle rocking motion. We used the minimun (8 seconds) seconds for each horse using the liquid nitrogen. I think that the two horses that did not take well (did not scab up) will need several more seconds. I want to wait until they shed because I want to make sure I line-up with the partial brand they have from my first attempt.

I was wondering about the flinching. What is the material your brand is made of? I've heard different application times depending on if it is iron or brass. Now I'm hearing brass is the way to go? And I saw one site about freeze branding that makes the handle out of wood so it's easier and safer for the person.

I've got my brand design but haven't sent it in for registration.

Here ya go...compliments to Terry Wallace who turned me onto this site, where I ordered mine. They did a great job, and not a long wait.

They did a good job and were fast. I bought 2 sizes a small and large. Small for the mini donks and foals, they said when the foal grows, the brand grows also.
I sedated all the horses and donks, but now I don't think I needed to The clipping was worse than the branding. I didn't sedate the cows and they didn't move or even flinch, obviously they were in a chute, but they still could of moved a bit. I could not find nitrogen anywhere, so I had to do dry ice and alcohol. The difference is you need to hold it on longer.
This is the brand my hubby made. It stands for Fine Step Farm.

Very nice! That's the thing, it makes sense to design the brand around the name of your farm.....however, I don't currently own a farm. :(

Then again, I've already come up with a name for the old future farm, so I guess it doesn't matter....

My question for both Beth & Tammi:
- Did either one of you buy the video when you purchased your brand?
