I have held onto this info for a few days now just b/c I wasn't really prepared to talk about it.

La Mina had her foal last week, but something went wrong. When they discovered the foal in the morning there was some inflammation on the little black fillys side. Not sure if she got stepped on or kicked or what exaclty, but she seemed weak and the vet was called.

Vet leaves medicine and says to watch her but he thinks she will be fine. Two days later.....no more little black filly. :(

Orlando was devastated to call me with the news. He dreaded it. I knew right away something was wrong. :(

Anyway, Good News is Mina is doing fine. They are bringing her back to the Miami facility this weekend. We hope to have her in shape for the Grand Prix at the end of March now, but we will see.

ohhhh Lori, so sorry. You must of gotten to close to me and my little black cloud.
Glad the mare is doing good. Geez, and it was a black filly to boot. Waiting is bad enough but when something goes wrong it is heartbreaking.

You must of gotten to close to me and my little black cloud.

Actually, I have my own little black cloud when it comes to foals. :-?
My Arabian mare has only ever had one foal, and it had some sort of freak defect in it's back feet. When it was born, the back feet were like J's but backwards, so the foal was walking on it's ankle w/it's hooves flipped upwards behind it. The vet said the bones appreared to be calcified like that. She said we could see what happened but didn't recommend it. I couldn't bear to watch that foal struggle and I made the decision to euthanize it. :(
Then, when I tried to rebreed a few years later, come to find out my mare had fibrosis and endometriosis(sp?) w/only a 10% chance to sustain a pregnancy. :-? So no Arabian foal from my life long friend Princess.

My last breeding experience (why I quit), I lost the foal, born six weeks early and not ready. The unexpected delivery tore the mare out, between her ******l canal and her rectum. It took me 10 months of surgery to repair it (she was a grade mare who already had ring bone because of neglect as a foal, and couldn't be riden). She tore out again. I ended up putting her down. Before this I had lost two foals. When I lost Sugar it just about killed me. Breeding is a pretty risky decision. And when you're a Jonah, it's even harder.

So, breeding Zar is the scariest thing I've ever done.

I"m so sorry Lori. It breaks our hearts. They do take part of us with them. All we can do is picture her, PIstachio and all the other loved but lost babies up in the greener pastures playing and having a great time.

Oh gosh, Lori...I am so sorry. So right...the best way to get over any loss is to keep busy...both you and Mina! There will be others...but you never really forget the ones you had only but for a short time. :(

There is nothing sadder than a little foal being euthanized or dying of natural causes. I am so sorry to hear this news Lori. My heart goes out to you and your beautiful Mina. You must be devestated.

She is a great mare and I'm sure you will someday get a wonderful foal out of her...

I'm so sorry to hear the bad news about the filly but I'm so glad your mare is doing well, I can't imagine how awful it is for people who lose the mare and the foal during birthing. I lost one of my geldings last Fall and went through a time where I wasn't going to do any more breeding with my Mares because of the risk involved; I was so afraid of losing another horse if there were complications. But I've realized that a person can't live their life worrying about things that could "possibly" happen when the positive outcome of things is so "wonderful!"

My thoughts are with you.

We are thinking of maybe doing embryo transfer. That way we could both get a foal of our choice breeding, and continue to show her. Plus I don't think it would hurt for her to take a year off from carrying a foal. Her first filly is coming 20 months now. I don't really know yet.

Glad to have you with us.

When my Arab mare lost her foal, years later I consulted w/The Pet Psychic....that's right....the one from Animal Planet....in person.
I broke down when she told me that my mare wanted to know where her foal went. She said my mare acknowledged how I had stayed w/her and mourned w/her for hours in her stall, and she thanked me. I was pretty speechless as to how this woman knew everything she did.
