Here we are in the midst of a full blown blizzard.. ...snow is blowing sideways and it is bitter cold, below zero with wind-chill...
http://pasofyd.smugmug.com/photos/129631621-M.jpg

I put the horses' blankets on cause I knew they would be out in this, and I don't want them getting soaked and cold...
http://pasofyd.smugmug.com/photos/129631540-M.jpg

Rico keeps pacing back and forth, I guess he has never seen weather this vicious...the other two are not straying far from their stalls....if I didn't have their blankets on this is what their whole bodies would look like now..

The ice on their eyelashes is so thick it is hard for them to keep their eyes open... ..and icicles are hanging off their faces....

So far about 8 inches has fallen...the worst is yet to come this afternoon....I hope I don't have to drive to work in this.....

I can see why you blanketed them. I hate sideways snow. We had one storm like this this year, started with freezing rain and went to snow...the snow balls were frozen on their coats.

Poor Rico. He looks awful.

Yea it's yucky down here in MA too. Not as yucky. We only have like three inches or so but it's sleeting now and they are just starting to plow. It was really a rough drive to the barn this morning. It usually only takes a half hour. Not today!! Everyone is in today since it's so yucky.

Nice pics. I love them. And I am sure that everyone is very happy for the extra proctection. :D

14 inches of snow now, 12:30pm, the 'good stuff' hasn't happened yet... ....supposed to get worse with lots more wind...just came in from lugging water....I thought the snow, being so cold, would be light and fluffy....NOT.... it's VERY heavy...I was out of breath after walking 10 feet(usually takes me 20 feet to start puffing.... :-?) ....we will probably lose power later...still praying I will not have to drive to work!!! Guy says no way am I going....

OHHH! Bless their little hearts. Joy, I hope you don't have to go to work. The pictures are a bit scary for me, and I am worried. I guess it is becoase we don't get snow down here. And when we do, it is mush by the end of the day. Stay worm and dry and keep us posted if you can. Take care.

JOY YOU BETTER NOT GO TO WORK.
I just got this off the weather up there in Orwell VT:

""THIS IS A DANGEROUS WINTER WEATHER SITUATION! BE AWARE THAT TRAVEL WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT DUE TO BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WITH HEAVY SNOW AND BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW LATER TODAY. DO NOT TRAVEL THIS AFTERNOON OR TONIGHT UNLESS IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!"

INTENSE WINTER STORM WITH HEAVY SNOW AND BLIZZARD CONDITIONS IMPACTING VERMONT 12 TO 24 INCHES ACROSS RUTLAND...

SNOW WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE REGION AND WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES THIS AFTERNOON AND THIS EVENING. THIS WILL RESULT IN TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 16 TO 26 INCHES BY EARLY THURSDAY MORNING. NORTH WINDS WILL ALSO BE INCREASING THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT...RESULTING IN SIGNIFICANT BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW AND BLIZZARD CONDITIONS AS WINDS GUST TO 35 MPH OR SLIGHTLY HIGHER. NEAR ZERO VISIBILITY IN HEAVY SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW...COMBINED WITH VERY COLD TEMPERATURES...WILL RESULT IN VERY HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT.

Well, Mojo & Amante finally had enough of the winter fun and came in the barn.

Poor Amante had an icicle right over his eye, so he couldn't open it

http://gallery.pethobbyist.com/data/65061Amante_squint.jpg

I'm glad he has his blanket on, or his whole body would look like his shoulders.

http://gallery.pethobbyist.com/data/65061iced_Paso.jpg

He didn't want me near him, but, I finally got the icicle off of his eye.

http://gallery.pethobbyist.com/data/65061icy_Amante-med.jpg

Mojo has much better insulation and hardly any ice formed on him.

It's official.. I'm staying home....
Guy called, took him an hour and a half to go 23 miles to work...none of the secondary roads have been plowed...no one can see WHERE the road is and the ditch starts...complete whiteout here too..can't even see the hill/woods behind the barn...
http://pasofyd.smugmug.com/photos/129671403-M.jpg

You can see that my car is pretty buried...it's sheltered somewhat from the wind by the garage and a stone wall that is all white now...but my trailer is out in 'the open'..NO snow on that..it's all blown off....we have about 2 feet now, some 3 foot drifts right now...still snowing very hard and viscious blowing wind...
I am starting to hyperventilate.... ...trapped....trapped....
http://pasofyd.smugmug.com/photos/129671532-M.jpg

going to go look for some red wine...I know I have some around here for cooking...maybe I can DRINK it...

Love the pics!!!!!!!!!!!! I love storms...as long as I'm not driving. Glad you did not go to work. I have been driving in snow for many days lately and today was different....heavy stuff that pulls the wheels even on my AWD mode. Plus....if this is your first snow, without snowbanks you can't tell where the road ends!!!

Glad my horses are SMART and stay in the barn....their own decision!! :D

I wrapped the body of my camera in plastic and went outside....big mistake....didn't think I would make it back inside!!! I could hardly walk through the snow..
This pic is not photoshopped...wind is blowing SO hard it's unreal...snow piles up on your coat in 30 seconds..poor Fundador has frozen eyes and now tons of 'cheek icicles'... :(

this is about a four and a half foot drift almost blocking Rico out of his 'shelter'...

Those pictures look like what we've had all winter this year. It has truly been the pits. I haven't seen a winter this bad in at least a dozen years.

I can't even walk to the fence around behind the barn because the snow is so deep, and it crusts on the top. Then when you walk on it, you take a couple of steps and then fall through the crust, landing 2 feet below. Ever try to climb up a 2 foot step without a handrail? Then sometimes the step gets you on the top, and other times the step lands you back down under the crust. And then you come to a DRIFT ... and the step is 3+ feet tall. Rose fell through one that was 5 feet high and could only get out by rolling!

I am REALLY ready for spring!

Ok ..remember that the next time you are tempted to buy 'cooking wine' or 'cooking sherry' at the grocery store -DON'T- Go buy the real stuff at the liquor store...a good wine..a good sherry..It serves 2 purposes..1)better tasting food 2) Emergency stash ;-)

no such luck here. The roads were yucky til this afternoon but it has been mostly rain and rain mix. no real snow. Only like three inches at the most. John is so upset. He loves the snow. I am fine if I don't have to drive or go out in it.

PasoJoy

Abejita, I DO know better... ;-)
My 'cooking wine' happens to be a nice cabernet sauvignon, 'Rodney Strong'....but, I don't drink very often, in fact haven't for years ...I did happen to break down and buy 'Rodney' a couple months ago, and he was VERY nice...so I bought another bottle..but this one is 2003, and the other was 2002...a much better year I guess, cause I don't like this one nearly as much....as a result, it has been sitting on my shelf, partially gone, for about a month...poured myself a couple swallows and it's really not good enough for a 'table wine' anymore.... so it's going back on the shelf for 'cooking'....

We are BURIED... ...Horses are OK, I hope they are still here in the morning, they can step right over their fences...I will have some interesting pics tomorrow for sure.. ..it's still snowing but not as hard, still very windy and some big drifts...here's Guy trying to get to the porch tonight...couldn't get in the driveway with the truck, had to park in neighbors across the road...said he had to stop three times walking to the house cause he was totally out of breath trying to get thru the snow, I couldn't get the door OPEN to let him in, he had to shovel snow away from it.....my car has disappeared....it was TONS of fun trying to feed the horses earlier.. :-? ..I HATE WINTER...

Hope morning finds all horses in their proper places.

Here in Rhode Island we got about 3 inches of snow...but everything is covered with a thick ice. I went out last night before it was solid and tried to break up the crust in their paddock. We shoveled the driveway and it just became a skating rink....so we left the snow in the paddock and chopped it up. Not too much fun about ice.

Yesterday it was sleet/rain...then snow...then more sleet and rain. The boys were in all day. I let them out for a couple of hours when I was home (between the waves of rain) and what does Scooter do? Oh, yes...nice, warm, dry Scooter runs over and rolls in the slushy snow. I was standing right there and wanted to kill him. He stands up and almost instantly freezes into a huge popsicle. I dragged him in and chipped him off and locked him back in....lol I'll see if I can get some good ice pictures this morning :)

I am not sure how I am going to get my guys out this morning. My entire paddock is a skating rink. I spread old moldly hay around the slushy puddles yesterday before it froze, that at least gives them some area they can walk, but I think I can only let one or two out at a time. UGH.

They're coming..be patient, I have only had one cup of coffee... :-? and haven't ventured out there yet....horses are OK, still where they are supposed to be...Guy is trying to figure out a 'strategy' to start plowing us out...dogs had to go to the 'bathroom' on the back porch  ...nowhere else to go and there's 'only' about 6 inches of snow that blew onto it...
Sun is out now....at least it's not still snowing....but still very cold...
I pity you guys down there with all that ice....hope all your horses will be OK.....

Well we got approximately 20" of heavy, wet snow ... this morning it is very cold and the sun is shining. However we expect drifts from high, gusty winds.

Kept horses in yesterday and today. Next problem : starter on snowblower decided to die yesterday ! We can't get much plowed or shoveled, so how to get bedding into barn and pooped shavings out? May pack down some paths with the tractor.

New starter is on it's way ... hopefully horses can go out tomorrow. It is beautiful and I know they'd enjoy it. We have one that rarely makes it a few feet out the barn door before she drops and rolls.

Have to be sure the tape part of the fence is intact and visible. Once the horses walked right over it and ended up down on the road. Don't want that experience again.
