I was cleaning out my mare's stall today and when I tossed a scoop into the bucket and I heard a loud noise. When I saw what it was I was astonished! It was a stone about the size of a baseball! I have never heard of a horse being able to pass a stone, neither had my trainer, her sister, or mother. We all only knew of stones being removed surgically after the horse had usually coliced numerous times. The mare had never coliced or changed attitude at all. I was not sure if it is this new food I have her on that helped push it out (Safe choice) or because she is fed flax seed which is good for digestion or what! But wow am I blessed because surgery would of been impossible for me to send her for and without that I would have lost her due to impaction colic.
Please if you could pray for my mare and THANK GOD that the stone passed and that she may have no more!! AMEN!
Has anyone else heard of this before?

Likely an enterolith...did you save it? You could saw it in two with a tile saw, or diamond blade to see...it will look like rings on a tree trunk section..... Or...send it to me and I'll saw it for ya if you want to know....

Hey Terry yep I kept it. I wanted to show it off to my barn friends lol.
My trainer said that once they cut one open at a barn she used to work at and they found some pieces of a hay net! That got me excited about opening this one to see what mymare had gotten herself into. Now I know what tools I need. If I don't know anyone that has those appropriate I will let you know! :D
Hey who knows maybe there will be a purl or dimond inside

Enteroliths can form again - and some horses are more prone to develop them. Antares died of an infection triggered by enteroliths... he died on the operating table... there were several the size of softballs... I didn't own him at that time.... No colic while I had him - no indication of any trouble. I had never heard of 'enteroliths'. At the time, I was told that he had 'gall stones'...
I would check with your vet to see if there's anything he can to check to see if she has more... many times they will 'grow' in the stomach and can cause significant loss of weight and worse....

I would think an abdominal sonogram would show any significant stones.
Boy that is a blessing, what a mess that could have been!

Here is a photo of an enterolith. Not PasoPerson's but it gives you an idea what they can look like.

Is it possible it is a real stone that was buried in a hay bale???? I often get strange things that were picked up when the hay was baled...

Ya gotta get that sawed in half! I'd sure like to see what started it....!
Do you know anybody with a water-cooled tile saw? Or someone with a demolition saw?

You might want to read this additional info - it does say to be suspicious of more possible enteroliths

Interesting article..thanks sandy! So does anyone know what is needed to cut the sucker? Maybe if I bite it! LoL just kidding.. I would crack my teeth...and it came out of my horses rear end..... :-?
The article said that vinager helps level Ph levels...there was a paso at my barn many years ago who had stones that were removed and they were white and hand a BUNCH of little pores in them. The vinager was EATING the stones....just not fast enough! Thanks again guys for all your help and prayers!! Pray that she may have no more stones!!!

How about putting it in a vise and going at it with a reciprocating saw? If you can't find a tile saw..

Home Depot used to have tile cutters in their shops - they charge 50 cents a cut .........

Yes there can be stones in a hay bale, but horses will normall lip around them and leave them. I find LOTS of stones in my feeders from hay.
I would keep this horse on a high fiber diet...lots of grass hay. You might also metamucil her (1 cup/day for a week) and repeat every few months. You can buy the Walmart brand, it's a lot cheaper. And mine prefered regular to flavored.
That picture is amazing...but it makes pooper hurt just thinking about it. ;-)
HOLY MOOLLLLYYYY!!
Thats crazy! I was reading at one of the sites that the ball is formed with Alfalfa and well water.. wierd....

I don't know what could of caused it or how long it have been in there. I got the mare in 2001 and I purchased her mostly becuase she would around 300 pounds under weight, abused and neglected. So who knows what she was eating when she was given no feed. Probebly all kinds of wood or even dirt. But now she is my health happy girl who gives lessons to little people and my trail horse.
