The PPR breed lost another fine horse with rare bloodlines. The last offspring of Jaqueline passed away yesterday!

Pedigree of Jaqueline http://www.tesiopower.com/pf/sixgen.aspx?hID=56165

Finesse was a son of Botafogo and Jaqueline. Botafogo is the supposed son of Siboney el Brujo but some say that he is possibly from Cibuco.

Pedigree of Siboney el Brujo http://www.tesiopower.com/pf/sixgen.aspx?hID=24253 Notes: pedigree of La Copita is incorrect and unknown. Estrella is Batalla X Consuela.

Pedigree of Cibuco http://www.tesiopower.com/pf/sixgen.aspx?hID=22352 Notes: pedigree of La Bruja is Batalla X Estrella; Estrella is Batalla X Consuela.

The good news is one of the best young stallions on the island is Linaje d'Excelencia, a son of Finesse out of a Cuentas Claras daughter out of a Brujo de Kofresi daughter.

I'm trying to find out Lori. Rafael spoke to the owner yesterday and there was no indication of a problem. I asked Rafael to confirm the rumors today, which he did less than an hour ago.

Finesse was not in good shape when I saw him March 2006. He was thin and his legs, particularly the front ones, were unsound. I have never been able to confirm through conversations the reason for his unsoundness. Some said it was because he was neglected for years standing almost knee high in his own manure, but I've seen cases of that here in the USA that caused allot of foot problems but not the leg problems I saw in Finesse.

It saddened me to hear Finesse's story and what he endured as a young stallion.  At the same time, when I saw him, his care was good and he seemed in good spirits, relatively healthy otherwise. I liked his phenotype, color, and size. Plus a son of Jaqueline.

I started asking about Finesse about a year before I saw him. First he was unable to breed, then able, then unavailable, then available. But that's a whole other story. Seems to be the theme for allot of stallions standing in PR and advertising shipped semen. I think it depends on planet alignment, moon phase, and wind direction. I've been fortunate to have an interest in a PPR stallion that is handled very professionally with good vet management.

Jaqueline was an inbred Guamani mare and with Botafogo, another rare line that isn't seen, this is a great loss!

Finesse was put to sleep last Friday due to a combination of conditions. He had recently broken a leg as well, so his owner decided it was best for Finesse to be put down. I don't know the circumstances that caused the broken leg or which leg was broken. Given his overall problems, it was probably best.

I keep bringing this up because when "breeders" follow a popular trend instead of what is right for the breed and for their mares, when a horse with the genotype is gone--it's gone!

Right now in PR Labriego and his sons can do no wrong. Lord de Sobreno is another coming up. Yet, I see stallions in PR with rare bloodlines, good phenotype, size, color, gait, disposition totally ignored.

Truthfully, some of this is because Puerto Rican breeders are still unwilling to share their stallions. This yes/no pattern MUST stop!!! Some of the problem is because PR breeders (not Puerto Rico) are behind in production technology. Some is because the stallion owners do not understand how important the horse is. Small breeders in PR that are not showing and have their horses tucked away do not get much attention. The combined reluctance and ignorance is KILLING the breed plus the tendency to look at the "one" instead of the many.

I just got the new PPR magazine issue and saw many rare bloodline horses with stud fees around $300. A son of El Duende, a direct male line to Don Toqui--very rare. An inbred horse to El Relicario and Paloma JQ. A son of Cuentas Claras out of a mare with Toro Negro and Picaflor. I've "found" another horse that has carries Nochebuena top and bottom. He is inbred to Nochebuena 3rd and 4th generation. Incredible!

We in the USA MUST begin demanding PR to participate in preserving the PPR here in the USA as well. PR must face the FACT the PPR is here and will remain here pure or mixed in spite what is happening in PR. The USA MUST preserve some purity for the future.

Worse I hear from EVERYONE, yes everyone, when I start campaigning for breeding clinics, "oh no one will go". This from every person in Puerto Rico and even those involved in the PPR at all levels. Well guess what, for every person I speak to about it and says this, if YOU go, then it will begin happening. The learning NEVER stops and this attitude of not needed, not interested, know-it-all, don't care attitude must end.

Good horses pass away all the time. The crime is allowing the genetics to die with them.
