Where in Colombia will you vacation?
It is truly an amazing country. I'm so hoping we can return. It's like one would picture the garden of Eden. Breathtakingly beautiful with mountains, flowers everywhere, two beautiful oceans, and very beautiful people also. But it is also very scary. Don't go without a native Colombian that you know personally as a guide.

That Feria is supposed to be amazing!!! I hope you can go and take lots of pictures. For those of you who haven't visited Colombia, Medellin is the land of eternal spring and also the source of many many of our imported flowers.

So, Caliber or someone, what advice can you give to a traveler from the USA wanting to visit and see some horses?

My advice is to have someone with you fluent in the native language. I attended this fantastic beautiful event in 1980, but my traveling American partner with me who knew a little Spanish language, far from fluent, got very frustrated over his lack of being able to communicate well. I didn't know any. It would be a major advantage to help enjoy the event to have someone who could translate.
I did take lots of color slides of the show, which included Resorte III's last exhibition. Resorte IV was there too. Little did I know at that time what historic horses I was viewing, and would come to know more of in years to come ... the Resorte dynasty!

We lived in Colombia for two years and worked there. It is a wonderful country with wonderful people and is one of the most beautiful places on earth - but it is also very scary and you have to be very careful and know what you can do and what you can't do. The absolute best way to go is with a native Colombian. who either lives there or who has family there and visits often.
The three cities that I'm sure would have farms near them would be Bogota, Medellin and Cali. Cali is cow country by the way. Then from one of these you can travel to different farms and other smaller places. But DON'T just rent a car and head out into the hinterlands. PM me and I'll be glad to share some experiences. If you've never lived in a third world country you have no idea what it's like so you must go with people who are familiar with the country. This does not mean you won't have problems. It just means you will have many less and the ones you have will be solved more easily.
Also do not ignore the health warnings. We were sick twice with extremely serious illnesses and we were very careful. Avoid salads, fruit, ceviche (raw fish plus lime juice), Chinese food (not cooked well) ice and don't drink anything that is not in a bottle . Illness will ruin your entire trip. Most parts of Colombia do not have a malaria problem but we wore insect repellent 24/7 or we would have been chewed to pieces. Friends still have scars on their legs from insect bites.
Other than that the cities are just cities - same stuff as our cities - just lots of petty crime and muggings so you don't go around looking American or rich. You wear the same type of clothing as the natives and keep you mouth shut on the buses and in the malls if you ride them and yes we did a lot cause they are so cheap. And no they don't hate Americans but criminals will single out Americans thinking they are wealthy. We never wore jewelry or watches either. They will get yanked off in the cities.
And what in this country is called a bribe for getting your problems solved quickly is just considered a tip in Colombia so you never get offended if it is implied that a little extra compensation would be appreciated.
Andres Mejia, breeder and paso fino judge, has moved back to Bogota and I'm sure has connections with many of the paso fino farms there. It's a wonderful place and we'd like to go back also and probably will one of these days.

WELL,I actually love my country, i'm colombian, and i have been living in bogota since i was young. I´m just 17, a tennager, but i love horses as my father. I can get the information you want about my country and its horses. We have horses all around the country, there are paso finos everywhere, not just medellin cali and bogota, there are also in the atlantic coast like cartagena, and at the east, villavicencio!!
Any thing you want to know about colombia pasos just ask, i'll be proud to answer!
