Beth Worden and I are taking our critters and doing down to Maryland to spend 4 days with Edurne. Only 5 weeks to go, I can't wait!
It's so nice to have something fun to look forward to after this dreadful winter. http://www.jammerbabe.com/flotilla/images/smiles/dude.gif

And there I was hoping you'd all come to Central Canada for Rose Mary's big ride!!!!
But...it still sounds FUN!!!! Beth, Barbara, and Edurne...I'm thinking you should be able to arm twist Coreen, Lisa, and Shelley into joining the group!!!

I know we are riding on the private farm Edurne boards her Paso at, but I think we are trailering to some trails nearby, too. Maybe we could meet for a ride there. 8-)
We will be in the Upperco area.

Sherri is also planning to join us on Sunday (if her mare has foaled), and we expect to get together for dinner as well. Lots of parks around here with lakes and reservoirs. Upperco is in the northern part of Baltimore county, close to PA line. So join us if you can.

Barb - How the heck are the Yankees supposed to have a sneek attack when you tell em we're comin'? That's OK, my horse will still be shedding by mid-April. May have to body clip her. She definately will not be in shape, but we'll try to keep up.
Anywhere I have ridden in Maryland has been gaiting heaven. Smooth rolling hills, sand and NO BIG ROCKS! When I ride the DuPont Estate down there I could leave my ponies barefooted! When that glacier came thru eons ago he left all the rocks in NY and PA - Got to Maryland and left just the sandy, soft stuff.
Yep - I'm ready to go. Hope I can get my rig out by then - got a foot of snow Michael and I have be rearranging all morning. LOL

Shelley, let me check with Edurne on that, she is hosting us, so I have no idea where we are riding, yet.
Edurne
03-19-2007, 11:48 AM
So far, the only ride we have planned as such, is a cross country ride down to where I used to live when I first came to Maryland, beautiful rolling hills and woods (will post some pics later). I believe that Cristi said that if additional riders were to come for this ride, that they can park at an adjacent farm. I will double check that, and get permission.
I rode Primero three times this week, and his breathing was heavy and his heart rate elevated. I have had the vet out to check him, and he is having his cortisol levels checked to see if the Ciprohedtrine has to be increased; he is also having a Lymes test as he was showing the same symptoms that another horse on the farm had last year for Lymes. I don't think it is heaves.... his lungs checked out clear.
Phyllis also has to be started, she has been off for months - and we are in the middle of foaling season and ice.
As far as I know, Beth and Appyday are the only ones with "fit" horses - but hopefully all of them will be ready to "go".
The second ride has yet to be established..... and who will lead the trail.
Beth Worden
03-19-2007, 01:33 PM
Jodi - Chewie (Ursula) is over at Brookfield at Barb Taylor's. She is riding now and coming along real good. Barb has a friend who is very interested in her so...she may not be coming home again. If she is not sold, I will bring her home April 1. That means Lukka is going south. I had to make a decision because the vet is coming next week to do shots and new coggins and while he's at it I need a 30 day health certificate on whomever is going out of state, so Lukka is it cause Ursula is in Brookfield.
Edurne - I'll ride anywhere, with anyone, no problem.
But the MOST important thing is, where is the best place for crab cakes?

03-30-2007, 06:51 PM
Thanks for the suggestion, but you are over 2 hours from Edurne's. My horse is going to spend a lot of time trailering just to get to MD, I really don't wanna add 4 hours to his time in the box. :( Can't you truck over to Edurne's?
Beth Worden
03-30-2007, 08:46 PM
Yes - let's get organized! Upperco, where Barb and I are staying is just south of Gettysburg, PA. There is about 2.5 hours of riding there on the battlefield BTW, but no more. Also 1.5 hours from the DuPont Estate aka Fair Hill and that is a fab place to ride and free for day riders - Gettysburg (Artillery Ridge) charges a small fee for day parking, I believe. If any of you folks really want to meet up for a ride that weekend give your input and we can get a place to meet, ride all day (bring lunch) and then go out to dinner somewhere. Hey, I'm going for the party, dudes. And our Northern horses will be flabby and shaggy so no one has to worry about having to go the endurance speed that I am known for, OK?
edited to add: Gettysburg is a very historic ride and I my husband and I used to do Civil War re-enactments, so I could do a history tour on horseback - for real. Have ridden and walked that battlefield many, many times. Along with Manassas, VA.

WHo is gonna come to my farm and do foal watch that Saturday night so I can go to my 20th yr high school reunion????
Seriously IF the bitc..oops.. 'Mare' foals by then(please go early please go early) I am in for Gettysburg or possibly whatever Sunday ride is happening. I am about an hour and a half (give or take ) East of Gettysburg so I can also put up a few horses even if I am still in zombi foal watch mode...just bring your bedding , feed bucket and hay..auto waterbowls and we will strip the stall when ya leave...

I believe it won't be a problem for Shelley to come to the farm if she wishes for the Saturday ride.
Codorus State Park is about 20 minutes away, Liberty Reservoir is about 15 minutes away, Gunpowder State Park is about 15 minutes away. I like Gettysburg and used to take my daughter up there for picnics, probably under an hour away.
Primero is still huffing badly. He has been on increased cypro for about 10 days now, it can still be increased if needed. The vet said it would take about two weeks to have affect. I don't know how long one needs to evaluate before increasing dose? Does anyone have experience.
Cristi tells me not to worry that he will be fine. I guess I must miss his bucking.
I'm suggesting J&Ps for dinner Saturday night, I'm sure they have crab cakes and for those that like American Italian, it is hearty and good. It is also within walking distance of my house.

E- Sounds like a plan!!!!!!!!! Very cool. I am SO glad Barb invited me along and that I have got to take over. LOLOLOL
It sounds like a bunch of riding near you and I just as soon stay put once I get my horse settled in a place. Plus, I would stay away from Fair Hill - they have a big TB facility on the grounds (Barbaro trained there before his demise) and I want to avoid (possible) EVH areas.
Of course - You ARE guaranteeing excellent weather that weekend, right?

It is one hour to Gettysburg. 45 minutes to Codorus (which is actually a lot closer)!!!!. Are you thinking that is too far Barb.....? Liberty which has a nice resevoir is only 15 minutes.
Currently just walking Primero for about half an hour as he is still puffing - he has a nice round hay belly :( and the grass is coming in :( :(
Dinner at my house sunday evening (Jim promised to put something, preprepared in the oven for us).

If you decide to do Codorus let me know..thats only about half hour for me and unless Preggy mare looks real super close I can probably make Steve foal watch for a few hours..(is this Sunday or Sat?) and I could probably even bring a horse for you Edurne if Primero isnt up to snuff..

she is gonna hold ....do you have an idea of time frame for codorus? My farrier had to reschedule me to this Sunday , but I can probably make Steve work (he says he needs the money so if he brutzes I will remind him of that) Do you need me to bring a horse for you or will you make that decision after Saturdays ride?? I have to figure out who can go (as in who isnt on the farrier list Unfortunately this is the big trim list and most of my ridable horses are on it....I know Primy isnt and she is not in shape but she is the energizer Bunny goes goes goes..Adagio isnt.. I need to test ride him as he just came off an Adequan course..Tempe He is the cute grey gelding you met up here he can go..he's a hair skitzy at times but as long as there are no cows ..lol
Let me check with Steve tomorrow .I am making him work Saturday night so I can go to my 20th year high school reunion..unless I chicken out...

Hope to evaluate him Friday evening..... last time a I rode he faded on the third two minute trot, but the walks in between were short. Hopefully by Friday the meds will have had more affect..... and I guess Primero will be doing long walks. I don't know. He's in his muzzle. Poor boy.
p.s. Tempe is as cute as they come.... he must be Primero's cousin re cows.

I imagine most the horses in the area are in the same condition (or lack of as the case may be). When I took Zar on her first trail ride of the season, she did fine until her Go-Go gene ran up against her Eat-Too-Much-Hay gene. She pooped out on the second to the last hill. We've gotten in quite a few rides since and she's lost a lot of weight (she's on a hunger strike). So, starting to look real good.

One of my "show horses" for this weekend is OK for wind breathing) and riding condition but her "shape" is not exactly as it should be - poor girl just could loose the post weaning baby belly in time but I'm taking her any way - she has worked hard, enjoys the activity and needs the additional exercise...

It gets so hot here in the summertime, that we don't take the horses out of the stalls (there's a big fan in each stall) between 10 AM and 4 PM. It's just way too hot and sticky.
But you guys have it 200% worse. There is no time of day, you can come out and play, when the weather is bad.

Primero would have been fine had it not been for the Cushings flare up. No I don't think that we will probably do the original ride planned..... but I expect our visitors will have fun and see some gorgeous countryside. He is not too out of shape - this breathing problem is not caused by that.
Cristi has spent many many years conditioning horses and she will/has a very good idea of what Primero can handle..... also we will never be that far away that we can't send a trailer out for him. Greyhound also has been out of work since February.... so it will be a start out for him also. I have no idea how much riding Beth and Barb have been able to do in the past few months.
Codorus is flat riding..... and perhaps I will be riding the wicked Tempo.

Abejita - Let's set a time - maybe not too early as you may have a 20 year old hangover, and we will have a few stalls to do before we can leave. Do you know the trails ?
Shelley - sent you address - hope it's not too far. Same goes about timing - we have stalls.

I dont drink and drive so no hangover..one beer or wine with my meal and that will be all Gotta be on my toes around you guys anyway ;-) (also will have to come home and wake up every few hours to look at preggy mare although I am beginning to think she might just go almost a year like she did with her first 4 years ago.... I was hoping that was just a maiden mare thing,,be kinda cool if she foaled on the same day.. May 8th..)
I have never ridden at Codorus I know where the one and only parking lot for trailers is though as it is right off the road I take to get there. It will take me about 1/2 hour to 45 mins tops to get there (those back roads are a little winding so with the trailer gotta go slow. ) and I dont care if you say meet at noon or 11 or 9 ..whatever... My schedule is open you guys are the ones with work  Farrier gets here at 9:30 so horses wont go out so no stalls to do..

Appy my rig is a dark blue flat bed dodge pullinh a white featherlite 3 horse. There is only one parking lot you are allowed to park trailers in right? Thats what my resident park goer/birdwatcher told me (Steve)

Just checking in to let you all know that Beth, Lukka, Amante, and myself have made it home safe and sound. I would post more, but I have to apply stuff to my sunburn. I'd love to show you a pic of it, but I don't think cowboy ed's heart could take it. ;-)
Oh, just wanna give a shout out to the most gracious of hosts, Miss Edurne. Beth & I had a wonderful, wonderful time. Thank you for opening your home to us and making us feel so very welcome. I am so glad we pulled this off, it was the trip of a lifetime.

I just got home about an hour and a half ago. I am whipped, but Amante seems in high spirits and is playing with Mojo as we speak. It's good to be home after being gone for 6 days. :D
I'll go through my pics and post more later, for now it's nap time.
