We have a mini that has foundered-very mild, being treated and doing well-she also has a history of diarrhea. I did a search and couldn't find anything on homemade diarrhea treatment, anybody have any ideas? We currently are using a paste we get from the vet and it's really expensive.

Thanks

I am not sure about home remedies only for diarrhea but I have had great success (horses, goats, dogs) with using probiotics.

I recommend Ration Plus - it is inexpensive, and easy to administer.

go to
www.rationplus.com

I cant say enough about how animals respond to Ration Plus

Get some Kaopectate in the caplet form...dose according to the adult human dose requirement for a mini, I would think. Crush your caplets into the grain, add a dose of Fastrack or other probiotic, and mix well with molasses and brown sugar. Works like a charm and the generic form at your grocery or Wal-Mart works just as well...
I had my Paso colt on Kaopectate off and on for six weeks and never hurt him a bit and it worked well.
Another thing...for allergies in horses, go to Sam's and buy the generic Benedryl ...400 caplets for 3.88. You can give up to 10 caplets a day for large horses (we have our QH on it in the summer for reactions to fly bites). Start with 4 and if that doesn't work, increase to 6, or 8 and up to ten.

Thanks so much everyone....we found the kao stuff at Tractor Supply and started Prissy on it today. She seems much better and the farrier will be out tomorrow morning to work on her feet. She's the sweetest thing in the pasture and it sure is hard to keep her put up and away from the herd. We did put our two Welsh boys in the front part of the paddock so she's not totally alone. Again, you all are great and really know your stuff!!.

We've had success with kaolin, and probios but be very careful with peptobismol. It has an aspirin like chemical in it that can be very irritating and cause bleeding if the horse has ulcers.

Both worms and sand cause diarrhea so you need to find the source of the problem because all kaolin does is stop the gut from dumping too much water into the manure. It doesn't cure the cause. Feed psyllium for sand and do it for several days. For a mini a cup is probably fine. Be sure to add it to some dry food and then you can chase with some wet food. But don't wet the psyllium. It turns into gluey gel. I'd also worm her since that's probably the number 1 cause of diarrhea.

One other warning. A friend used to work on a thoroughbred breeding far and was really big on bran mashes. Every time she did one her young colt got terrible diarrhea. A bran mash is a drastic change in diet. The easiest way to make a mash is to use their current food and add warm water and a little apple sauce or apple chunks. Don't use something totally different and throw off all the bacteria and stuff in the gut.

When in doubt.. ask your vet. Mine recommended it to me as a temporary treatment for a case of diarrhea. I wouldnt want to pass on any information that could inadvertently harm your mini.
