I was looking around the internet at halter bred QHs. How do they get them so muscled up?

Actually, I have one in my barn right now...she's a pretty little thing...red dun, she's a breeding stock paint. Her daddy's an Obsess to Impress son, out of the Impressive line. She's here to learn the basics of halter...she's only 11 months old.

i just got a really nice QH stallion. he has good muscling. i will try to get some pics of him soon.

just remember, there is something for everyone, and there are also extremes in every breed.

Pretty filly - make her a riding horse. Some of the things done to these halter horses you don't want to know. At least the ones that PIN in the class. Hey, I LOVE a good QH to ride once in awhile. It keeps me honest. Whenever I get complaining that one of my gaiting horses are rough, I switch with a QH buddy and realize I better quit my bit**in'. Contrary to what some people believe, the QH is not buckie or prone to "blowing up". A broke horse, is a broke horse. The ones you may have observed were not broke horses.

Hey...she's not mine. She's simply here for training. And Shelley, halter or not, I had a young farrier out here to trim her the other day, and he's falling all over himself to buy her.

I don't care for the extreme muscling of the halter horses, but I sure DO love the muscling of the working QH's. I grew up with the breed and I've owned many of them. They are nice, honest, and hard working.

I guess I consider the muscling the same way I do with humans, I don't care for the Mr. Universe body building at all...but I sure salivate over 6-pack abs on a well built guy!

In fact, I prefer PFs that have nice big butts and good muscling.

I have no idea, Shelley....since she's not mine, I'm not selling her, and I'm not particularly interested in QH, I didn't even ask....
she's only here for some simple training to learn the basics and then she will go on to a professional QH trainer.
We specialize here in starting PF's to trail...and I'm not even sure why they brought her to us in the first place...other than the fact we are cheap!

Oh gee...something else to worry about??? Well, she's been here a month and a half...on the same feed...and hasn't dropped dead yet, I'm fairly certain she won't in the short time left here...so I'm not going to worry about it.
Frankly I just spent four days getting one of my own through a colic episode so I'm not looking for something to fret about right now...sigh... ;-)

Hmmm.... well.... I bred the working type QH for 17 years.
I loved them then and I love them now. A good horse is a good horse.
We used to take ours to the halter classes in the morning...win & at least place, and then ride them all afternoon.

I've now owned Pasos for going on ten years...and I will still say to this day... you would be hard pressed to find a Paso that could work and be as versitile as a QH, and mainain the same degree of level-headedness. I'm working on trying to get a couple of my Pasos to BE as versatile as a QH...

I'd like nothing better than to have a Paso that could keep up with or exceed the abilities of a QH... Ever notice that my Pasos are sturdy, with bone & good feet? There is a reason for that!

Do I need to put my flame suit on?

Mel, they keep them stall and feed them sweet feed and also give them injections. They will let them in the arena for and hour a day. Well, that is what the people do that I us ta work for did.

Appy, I know halter horse people that use steriods on their horses.

Terry Wallace
03-19-2007, 04:35 PM
When we had our QH... nobody used steroids... this was in the 1970's & early 80's. Its was muscles from being worked and good genetics.

No "Impressive" blood in our herd... mostly QH (SkipperW) & TB(Three Bars)

I used to love seeing the new foals with their big forearms and gaskins...
They are a LOT different looking than Paso Foals which always look "whimpy" to me as most have no forearm and little gaskin...

I wouldn't trade that Paso gait for more muscle though... I find that Pasos muscle up fairly well...you just have to work them consistantly to get it.

A friend barrel races an Impressive line QH but no hypp thank goodness.

Terry you need to check out the Florida Cracker horse (I consider them a paso fino with mustang sturdiness as they have paso fino genetic makeup with the toughness of generations of being feral in the sloughs of florida) if you want something that has gait but can go all day and is a "thinking" horse. If I had lots of land I'd have a herd of them. It's just not easy to get one that is already trained that is breeding stock. They keep the good ones. They are totally amazing horses that have been used for cattle work in flroida for generations and then turned back out for the rest of the year to live on their own as they have done since the Spanish conquered Florida so they seem to me to be more adjusted to dealing with humans even though most of them haven't had human contact.

I've got two Impressive bred Apps now, and I had an Impressive bred AQHA. All are N/N, luckily since they were family before HyPP was public knowledge. They are all extremely athletic. And the AQHA was by far the most athletic animal I have ever had the pleasure to throw a leg over.

Halter horses are at one end of the extreme. All breeds have thier own extremes.

I personally love a good horse of any breed.

Oh boy...you want ancient history? The QH's I showed as a kid were Doc Bar, King stock. and Dun Played and Challenger. Reiners! Yep we reined on the East coast some. We had a show class called the "Stockhorse Class." You had to do figure eights, roll-backs, sliding stops and "dry" rope and that horse had better double-time backwards when you stepped off and grabbed the rope. We also had an App stud and a sprinkling (pun intended!) of those around. THen there were the draft/TB crosses for "hunt" classes and I even had a TB show jumper that was a very special mare. Ah...those were the days. My papa thought we were nuts to "ride" trotting horses. He was from the old country and served in the Imperial (Russian) army. He culled the gaiting horses out of the auction for riding. As a kid I rode the gaiting horses at home, but there were no shows (in NY State) to show a gaited horse, so we showed the trotting kind. If you are going to deal horses you have got to get out and show, so that's what we did. We kept the "good stuff" at home for our personal use. ;-)

It has been a lot of years since we dispersed our Paint breeding program, but I was surfing the other day and came across a son of our original Paint stallion (one of the first, if not the first to be imported to Western Canada). There were plenty of QH back then but Paints were not well thought of (no wonder it seems like I've done this before LOL Pinto Paso Finos, what was I thinking)... Anyway, this son of Eternal Payday seems to be making his mark just like his sire did...
http://www.wardhansonpainthorses.com/images/facemanatreno.jpg

Here is his write up
Our herd sire, Mr. Faceman, was campaigned in both Canada and the U.S., earning his APHA Championship. He has 16 Grand and Reserve Grand Championships to his credit. He is now retired from the show ring and his career consists of breeding mares, moving cows, and giving rides to kids that come for a visit.
We consider ourselves to be very fortunate to have found such an incredible herd sire! He has a wonderful disposition and a huge heart, which he consistently passes on to his foals. He is pretty easy on the eyes as well. He is very correct, with a stunning head and neck. You could say he turns a few heads when he goes to town!

Over the years Faceman has earned a reputation for being an all-around horse. Now he is proving himself to be an all-around sire as well. You'll find Faceman babies competing and winning in Halter, Pleasure, Reining, and now on the open Hunter Circuit.

Yes please..Here is a write up I found on Painted Eternal

Painted Eternal was sired by the AQHA Leading Sire, Eternal Sun who was sired by a thoroughbred stallion whose dam was out of a daughter of Man O'War, one of the greatest race horses in the world. Eternal Sun's dam is an own daughter of Silver King. Yellow Jo is an own daughter of APHA Champion and multiple Champion sire, Yellow Mount whose ancestry reads like a who's who of foundation bloodlines that are so popular today
