Do you have a classical dressage instructor at Camp Kanata? I would love to come and watch you and Pitty do dressage one day!

He does have a nice butt!

Jeany,

I'm the only one at Kanata who does Classical Dressage. Pitty and I started this thing all by ourselves! Of course you'd be more than welcome to come by and meet him sometime. :D

Yeah, Barbara, I wish my butt looked that good too!

Erin, unfortunately I have not gotten the book yet! I am going to, though. Right now I'm having to spend my moola on other horsey expenses. Gotta love the life of a horse owner ;-) I do get a lot of ideas from a great book called "Dancing With Horses" by Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling. Another one is "Thinking Riding" by Molly Sivewright. Both have some great exercises to use daily.

As far as ringwork, I keep it simple. I do a lot of patterns, and although I am not interested in getting tested, I do work the USDF tests. I do a lot of circles, serpentines, halts, walk to canter transitions, straight lines, leg yields, *beginning* work on the shoulder-in, gait transitions/gaiting patterns, working on cueing, weight aids, and collected/extended walk/canter work. I also like to take Pitty out in fields or the woods for a change of scenery. The key to Classical Dressage is to ride in a balanced manner so that your horse carries himself in a balanced manner. In this way you can accomplish simple exercises correctly and with much better strengthenin results. Probably the most beneficial thing I started doing, and the one I got the best results with, was collected walk work. When Pitty started really engaging his haunches and carrying himself in a harmonious frame, his butt began to expand, his chest got stronger, and his topline became tighter. Of course you get very similar results with collected canter. I think the cantering is Pitty's favorite thing to do. We are working on getting a little bit of canter piaffe. Pitty seems to like the slowing almost to a standstill while cantering. Maybe one day we'll actually do a piaffe! Mostly I just do this for his benefit. I became so much better of a rider when I started this.

I do teach Classical Dressage in lessons. Right now I only have one student who's really interested in it, and another who's slowly coming around. I'm working with one student and an Arab, who has a lot of potential but is very hard headed and has little motivation. They do so well together and I've seen a big change in horse and rider after working on Dressage.

Jeany, when you get your horses at your house, I'd love for you to trailer over and ride with me. People do that a lot at Kanata. We have some trails, two fields, a woods paddock to ride in, and an arena. It would be fun to get to ride with a fellow paso person. At any rate, you need to pop over and meet Pitty sometime!

There is a book on doing dressage in paso's. Have it but can't think of the name at the moment. Unfortunately never had an arena to work in.

Dear Carolinians,
We have another friend who does and teaches classical dressage and she is very, very interested in pusueing more with her paso finos which she now rides mostly. her name is Dianne Maurey she is near Stella around Aiken, which I think is South Carolina but she rides at some of the trail rides for Piedmont I think. She may even have a show or tests for gaited classes if she finds interested parties. She does not BB that much but when we see her and Ron at endurance rides we will tell them about you.

And they are really nice people, used to raise Saanen dairy goats and she rode a thoroughbred mule in LD endurance for a while before they got paso finos! And they are retired educators.
