From today's PFHA e-news:

BETSY MOTE REMEMBERED AT THE CAROUSEL CHARITY HORSE SHOW
The Paso Fino Horse Association members dedicated their participation
in this show to our friend and fellow Paso Fino owner and avid
competitor Betsy Mote. Betsy recently died after a freak highway accident when she and her husband John ran out of gas. Still a vital, young woman, Betsy was struck by another motorist while she was still a vital, young woman with many plans she had yet to fulfill.

We have all known Betsy to be a huge supporter of this breed, a woman
who found new meaning in her life when she discovered and learned to
ride Paso Finos. Her daughter Shaina and Betsy have been fixtures at our
events for seven years, won many ribbons, brought in many youth riders,
ridden in parades, exhibitions and volunteered for many events and
shows. We will all miss her. We want to send our love and support to her
family: her husband John, her son Johnny and her daughter Shaina. There was a moment of silence for Betsy and her family. (All the Paso Fino participants in the show work arm bands in her memory.)

I didn't know her personally, but did see their family was very active in showing and PFHA on the regional and national level. It is a major loss to their family and friends.

Having any incidence on a busy road...running out of gas or a flat tire is just plain dangerous these days.

Betsy was a warm and wonderful person. You didn't often see her without her dog, Elvis, a very nice Chinese Crested, usually being pushed around by her in his stroller. She was a tough competitor in the showring but always gracious, no matter what her placement. She will be missed by the Paso Fino community.
