And here he is.
HARLY
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/BoydRuss/port.jpg
He needs some groceries, caveleties, and stall time to keep from running off his groceries but give me a few months and he will look like a new man.
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/BoydRuss/Leftside.jpg
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/BoydRuss/rt.jpg
I was worried about him taking down fences to get at the girls.
The girls took down the fence within 30 minutes to get to him. Its the first time I have seen Porcy in heat since Carlos left. Even Pluma got all fired up for the new man on the farm. And no offence to Hollis and Gwen but the girls didn't even get this excited over both of there boys last weekend, But then it was to cold for any nonsence.

Wow...he looks like a Greyhound! When you said "stall time to keep from running off his groceries" I'm guessing he put himself in this condition?
If that is the case, it's going to be an interesting challenge to get him to gain weight. You might talk to LynnG, she has done great with her guy and he stands and gaits and gaits. She got weight on him finally.
Good luck Boyd. I know you'll do great with him. He's going to be beautiful.
Now...about that name????

He definatly has a flare look about him.. He will be stunning for sure!! Already a looker! :D
Boyd R
03-25-2007, 01:48 AM
Carol he is Gaiting around out in his stall. So definitly going to be a challange to put some weight on him unless he chills out. He is really tone like a long distance runner not starved. Beautiful coat and mane so the nutrients are there. At the trainers he was really laid back when allowed at liberty in the arena which runs along the stalls. So I think he will settle in a few days.
Paula.
His reg. name is Espectacular de Regalia #44,246
foaled in June 03
dad is Destinado out of Profeta
Momma is Lorena de Espectacular out of Espectacular out of Kopeki
He is just green broke, he has been ridden but he needs a lot of ground work. Or at least needs to learn to pay attention when being worked. At the moment he is more concerned with the ladies.
As far as Harly goes. Figured it was time for me to have one. It was that or Mr. Happy feet.
CarolU
03-25-2007, 01:57 AM
Well, one thing for sure, you are going to have some awesome gaiting babies out of him! Probably hit the ground in gait! LOL
Once the girls are PG and he has a 'herd' he'll probably settle down.
Okay..now, we need progress reports on a regular basis.
Now...HOW did he get the name Harly??? (I'm sure Sandy is fine with it, afterall HER favorite horse was named Motorcycle! ;-) ) but Harly is awful close to HOG and he AIN'T that. LOL
Have fun Boyd! You needed a new project and he looks like a nice one.

Wow, He is beautiful. He has a gorgeous head. I can't wait to see him with some more groceries. Plus he is young and will fill out more anyway.
I was thinking he looked like a Juan Miguel son, but I guess not. He has that long, lean look I've seen some of his babies have when they were young like your boy.

Bet if you give him his own paddock where he can SEE his kingdom he will quit all the pacing.
There was another stallion, El Santo, that did the same thing. I begged the owners to give him a pasture and a mare of his own. He gained weight right away and was very happy and calm.
JennLM
03-25-2007, 01:53 PM
When we got Delgado he had come from the trainers who said he did nothing but pace and got so very skinny. When he got here, even with mares right next door, he never paced and gained weight. I am sure you will figure out how to get more meat on him
pnalley
03-25-2007, 03:02 PM
We had a stallion here that would pace & loose weight too. We put him in a paddock by himself, with a gelding over the fence. He could see all the other horses. It diodin't take long for him to calm down & quit pacing.
Carol Nelson
03-25-2007, 04:18 PM
SmartPak makes a wonderful herbal calmative called Quiessence. A friend of mine got a gelding that was quite hyperactive and couldn't keep weight on, and she put him on that. It worked wonders in calming him down and he gained weight and muscled up quickly.
I don't know if it tests though...so if you're planning on showing him at all, you might want to check that.
He's nice, Boyd! I can't wait to see him in a couple of months after you've worked your "Boyd-magic" on him! ;-) :D

03-28-2007, 04:23 AM
Good grief.... the horse is not psycho, he's not starving - he's in a completely new environment and surrounded by mares who have jumped fences to get to him. Even without knowing _all_ the details of this horse's _normal_ behavior/feeding patterns, common sense would dictate a period of time required to adjust to new surroundings which include new feed, new hay, new handlers, new horses..... Since he's _normal_, he's going to react temporarily to this changes....
You've got a _really_ nice horse, Boyd! Have fun!
GregM
03-28-2007, 04:33 AM
He was never big on bolting his feed before, guess he was confident it would be there when he was ready. He does like his hay and grain together, and he prefers his grain spilled out of the bucket on the ground ;-). He likes to play toss the feed bucket, too, I think he got that from Echo. He'll be lots of fun, Boyd, good luck and good fino.

Pretty much acting like a stallion Ed. He's got other things on his mind. Food appears to be an afterthought. Now that he has a heard I think he will settle nicely.

Boyd...if you have trouble keeping weight on him...try giving him Ration Plus. It only takes six drops a day...a bottle lasts a very long time. Its what I had to use on a pacey stallion that could not keep weight on.
That horse looks a good 250 lbs underweight..it will take some time to get it back on him and ration Plus really helps.. it makes the gut more efficient and helps them have a better appetite.
Pasogirlz
03-28-2007, 04:05 PM
I have used Ration Plus in the past as well, and LOVED it. I had great results on a horse that was a hard keeper w/little appetite.
Terry Wallace
03-28-2007, 04:40 PM
NOT skinny? You guys are kidding right? I don't think he'd grade out higher than a "2" BSC in those photos....
Good grief....
Pinto Paso
03-28-2007, 04:59 PM
I second/third Ration Plus - and I agree this horse is underweight.. I brought home an aged SKINNY stallion, hard keeper, easily distracted.. many many people tried to put weight on him and tried hard - I put him on Ration Plus - far more than a few drops (3CC 2X per day) went through a complete bottle then reduced the amount.. this horse in his 20's now is not on ration Plus for quite some time, and is a fatty...
Ration Plus in a probiotic, it increases appetite, reduces stomach upset, helps with proper digestion and use of feed.
Pasogirlz
03-28-2007, 05:00 PM
I think we can agree the horse needs to gain a few pounds (and that we have already discussed how it lost quite a bit in just a few days)....but I don't see it on deaths door either.

I don't think he'd grade out higher than a "2" BSC in those photos....
Enough is enough.... You have made some appallingly uninformed statements by _selectively_ addressing only what you choose to see.
_I_, by comparison, base my comments on knowing what the horse looked like when he left here, his pedigree, age, his eating habits, his feed schedule - brand, type, and amount of feed and hay, his personality, _and_ by observing that what someone mentioned as a 'wasp waist' was obviously a result of his new circumstances which has caused a _temporary_ lack of hindgut fluids and fiber - he is 'tucked up'.
Feed and housing changes can and do throw even the calmest horse off schedule for a few days. The horse is also very young and in a mare-stallion situation which has caused him to 'pace' off some weight.
If you think this horse is a '2' - you need to go back and read 3, 4, and 5 body conditions. I have seen supremely fit endurance horses who would barely qualify as 4's and _that_ description says ribs 'barely' visible. The first word in '2' is 'emaciated'. That doesn't fit this horse at all.
You have jumped on a picture of a horse in a temporary condition and assumed somebody needed your advice (which they didn't).
Once again - unsolicited 'advice' has diminished another member's joy and pride in acquiring a horse they already love.
We know that his weight loss is temporary, that he has already started eating again, and we look forward to watching him mature into the wonderful stallion he will become.
We know how thrilled Boyd and Su are with Harley and we are very happy for them.

See since he is here I think I am a good source for the condition of this horse. His mane and coat are in beautiful condition. Meaning he is getting the nutrients he needs. Underweight? Yes. starved?? no. He is fit like a marathon runner. Also not even 4 yet. Phsyco???? don't know where that came from. He loves human companionship and touch and is behaving as a young stallion just moved to a new home would and frankly much better in my opinion. Now that he has a mare he is eating and trying to if anything hide from Porcy.
At no point did I ask for anyones opinion. I do take in what is said on this BB but form my own thoughts and decisions on my own. If I wanted to know about his past I would research it and decide my own opinions. All that I am concerned with is today and tomorrow and am greatful to all involved to have this awsome guy in my barn. I swore never to have another stud here but he was to good to turn down.
Now if you all can't be respectful of others. Lori you may lock this thread for all I care.

Woah Sandy!! I don't think Boyd needs to blamed at ALL for the condition of that horse! He didn't get that thin in the 3 days Boyd's had him! He looks to me like a horse that has paced his weight off for some time.
But, I agree with all the above, I have faith Boyd will get him in shape in no time. TLC, RationPlus and a LOT of groceries and he'll bloom again!
Good rescue Boyd!!!

First he is no rescue, second, I think he is aware of his surroundings and is not quite sure about them yet. Third, He is a young stallion and is not quite mature yet. It will take him a little time for him to get us to his surrounding and since Boyd has only had him for less than a week. I think he looks pretty damn good. Boyd's horses mostly stay in the pasture with access to the barn, and from what I have seen He takes very good care of them. I think he takes better care of his horse than he does himself. No one need to worry about or tell Boyd how to take care of this horse. He has plenty of experience in that area with room to grow. I have all the confidence in the world that Boyd knows what he is doing.
Now, lay off Harly's weight! :rant
Oh, and Don took very good care of Harly when he had him too. Nuff said.

Im not in the breeding business. Hopefully we will get a fino Pinto next spring. If he turns out to be that something special than maybe you can work your majic with hin in the ring. And who knows. For now him and Porcy are in heaven. It is amazing how she never gets to close to the other horses. keeps her space but with stallions she is at home and runs the show. I have enjoyed watching her today heard him all over and never lets him out of reach.

Well, truth is bailey, I can't see 90% of the photos posted becasue they are blocked.
Second, I'm not a believer in judging a horse by photo or video. Yep, it helps but it's not what I rely on for the final verdict.
Third, I'm always pleased with a paso goes home to a happy home. I don't give a rat's donkey butt what they look like. I love my breed and I love those that love 'em. The rest will work itself out. I don't have to like 'em all to be proud of 'em and their owners.

The bottom line is "spectacular".
Here's a horse that is related. I've seen with my own eyes the production of Yahuba and her son Alazan de Plebeyo.
http://www.pasopedigree.com/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4056
The breeder of Alazan has an inbred colt using Yahuba and half-sister (not sure but sister or half-sister, can't remember) that I think will be another genetic gem.

You know...nobody was "JUDGING" this horse! I didn't read ONE word about his conformation. The horse is thin...paces his groceries off. So???? Every post has been suggestions to help Boyd get his weight back. That's NOT judging the horse!!!

Right Carol, I believe you. No one was "judging" a horse maybe Boyd but certainly not the horse. That's what I like about this forum. If it ain't the horse it's the person, right Carol? How soon we forget. Call 'em "suggestions if you want to. I guess it's fair play. Why be so sensitive? I thought your posts were few of the decent ones.
Let's hear it for raining on another guy's parade especially AFTER he posted about the goals he had for getting the horse to the "approved" state of forum health. And AFTER he posted his "thanks" for the "suggestions".
Just go check out the comments under the conformation forum about THIS thread. I'm not alone.

I simply relayed my experience with a horse that was distracted to the point of being skinny "infering" that Boyd's was not as bad - underweight not under fed... and what helped the horse I acquired - my post also related that others had tried many ways to get the same results not that anyone had neglected or abused - simply that it was HIS condition and how it improved.. I think many wanted us to be jumping on Boyd - fueling the fire, everyone knows he has not had the horse long...

Where are the pics of the emaci8ated horse? Were they removed?
I can't see a rib or any other bones protruding. He looks lean and drawn up a bit in the flanks but hardly skinny. ( unless of course you're comparing him to so many neglected obese horses on the verge of foundering that so many folks on here are proud to brag about...)
A real looker Boyd. He'll definately be turning some heads. Congrats.
