This is a short clip and the first time I've tried this. I took these pictures and video while riding Zar with my Christmas present. I am pretty pleased with the results and will probably take you all on a few rides this summer now.
The first picture is the Onaqaui Mountains (don't fell bad, I can't pronounce it either), then is Betty on Sadie on her FIRST trail ride with us. Sadie is just getting the idea (almost) that she can walk. She walked fine on the way back, that was 7 miles later. The chestnut horse is CJ with owner Judi.
The last picture is Big Hallow. We plan a ride up there later this summer.
It's short and no music. So should load fairly quickly.

Well, today was an experiement to see how it would turn out. I was afraid it would be like a drunken woman with video cam on a Rum boat (and YES that was a BAD video!!). But I was happy.

Looks so much like out here right now, how neat! Must be neat to be in the middle of nowhere.

That is why we LARGO. LOL
Although that tape was shot at a trail walk. Next week I'll do one through the cedars. That should be better, now that I know how they work.

I enjoyed that - I'll have to get out and see the country sometime! I have barely left New England.

Well, Zar was in "Trail Walk".... I think she/Sadie were having a 'mare' thing about who had the cutest hiney, and CJ was back there judging.
CJ keeps up most of the time and led some of the time...we trade places to train all the hores...but these were all taken on the way out and the girls were in a hurry. CJ lives there, so he already knew there was no reason to hurry. LOL

What kind of camera is it? I am looking to buy a new one, and need something simple to operate. Would you recommend yours? It looked like from the video that is sure takes good clips--no shake--I realize you are on a Paso, so that helps also

This camera is an Olympus Stylus 750

The good points about it are that it is small, simple, light weight, does video (which I needed to work on gait), is shock and water resistant, and it has image stabilization on stills (pretty important when riding!!!). The videos are high resolution and you can (with additional software) pull stills from them that are good quality. The computer menu is easy to read and choose options on a good size LCD.
The only thing I don't like about it is that it uses only the LCD as the viewfinder, which you can't see when it is very bright outside. So you have to 'guess' if your subject is in the picture. I would like to have both the LCD and a regular viewfinder.
I think it is GREAT camera for riding.

I'm envious of the vast openness and beautiful scenery you have in your back yard. We have some beautful scenery (but nothing as dramatic as the mtns. on your video) here in Upstate SC, but have to drive to Parks for any type of isolation and good trail riding. Thanks for sharing the video with us.

Wow...I remember when 5.0 megapixel was state of the art! Cool camera, Carol...and I really enjoyed the video! That's some gorgeous scenery there...I can see why you really don't want to move to Texas. ;-)

You might like these pictures from our St Patrick's Day trail ride. This was near Stockton, UT. Although "Trail ride" is a little off. We went cross country most of the time.

Another picture from that ride. As you can see, Zar's Go-Go gene ran hard into her Eat-too-much-hay gene. She had quite a workout, lots of hills to go up and down. (yes, I've been taking smiling lessons from Shelley!! ;-) )

While I could leave this area, I could NOT leave the west. Millions upon millions of acres of Federal land, and you can ride in all of it (except watershed), any time. Amazing.

Do you have to watch the ground much out there? Here in my area of Florida you have to pay attention that you aren't about to end up in a gopher tortoise hole.
My husband tried to avoid one once, ended up going over the top of where it was dug out and him and the horse both sunk into the ground up to the horse's belly.

We don't have tortises or ground hogs here. In an irrigated field you'll find gopher holes, but, unless REALLY thick, they aren't normally a problem. The only BIG holes you'll find out in the desert are rabbit or badger holes and they are always located under a sagebrush and are pretty visible. To be honest, I've riden cross country here for years, used to run cattle and they went all over. I've never even heard of a horse breaking a leg in a rabbit hole. I have heard and seen several bad accidents with old fence posts and old wire though. A bad problem around here is JUNK and old wire. Seems to be the mentality that 'out of sight' is 'out of mind'...at least the mind of the dumpers. And not just horses. I've seen antelope, deer and elk entangled in wire.
That is a nice thing about BCH, we have service projects and clean trails up. That doesn't really help the cross-country stuff though.
