This morning I had one of my colts gelded. The vet was very new at it and it made me quite nervous. He sedated Shadow and it took him 30 minutes to get "his stuff" together, so he had to give him more sedation. My old vet was there, too, giving instructions. I was glad about that, because I was just about to ask the other guy how many castrations he had done.
I had asked the young guy before my vet got there, whether he was going to lay him down and he said "yes". My regular vet came in and he told him to "do" him standing and so it went. At times, both vets had their hands "up there".
Since Shadow was already sedated, I had his mouth checked for wolf teeth. So now, the poor fellow has a bloody mouth, too.
My vet, who has been a vet a very long time and has judged horse shows for many, many years, stepped back, before I loaded the colt into the trailer, and looked the colt up and down, and commented on his confirmation, saying "I like this colt ".
When Shadow was born, he looked real "scrawny", big head and tiny. I liked him, but thought he was nothing special, aside from his great personality and intelligence.
This year, I took him for a walk and my neighbor asked whether I got a new horse. He couldn't believe that this was the foal that he had seen many, many times in the paddock.
For the last few months, I have been watching Shadow and I've started to like his looks more and more. He had already convinced me of his unique, sweet, personality and unusual intelligence...Now, the vet confirmed my feelings about his looks, too.
