THE HORSE IN THE PUERTO RICAN CULTURE
An spectacular exhibition at Museum of the Americas, at Cuartel de
Ballaja in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, about the presence of the horse in
Puerto Rican art and culture that will be open until May 28, 2007.
From the 16th century to the present day the horse has captured the
imagination of Puerto Rican artist in both the fine arts an the popular
arts. This exposition presents the equestrian theme in all its great
diversity. These galleries contain works about the horse from art,
literature, sports, music, advertising, and crafts.
The Puerto Rican School of Equestrian Arts presents this Exposition
part of its mission to explore and disseminate the historical,
educational, and cultural aspects of the equestrian arts in Puerto Rico.
“The horse has been an inspiration to our painters since the 18th
century, and continues to be go through the present day.”said Jannette
Figueroa, exhibition director. “The horse as the primary focus of a
landscape is a recurring theme: whether in the country side, on the
ranches, in the sugar cane plantations, in the town, or in the
city””. We also see the horse as the inseparable companion of man, whether
the jíbaro or the landowner.” “The horse is an integral part of
our traditions and history, and is present in aspects of political and
religious life as well.”
“This exhibition which is excellently displayed, presents the
presence, importance, strength and beauty of the horse as an aesthetic
ethnic entity.”” The public will see uneven but interesting renditions
of horses in paintings, drawings, graphic art (specially posters)
sculptures, santos de palo (specially the Typical Puerto Rican Three Kings
riding horses) and other three-dimensional discourses. “The exhibition
succeeds at exposing different generations of artists have capture the
horse in their historical moment, wrote Me. Manuel Alvarez Lezama, an
art critic and professor at the University of Puerto Rico.
The Puerto Rican School of Equestrian Art invites you to appreciate
these cultural manifestations and to enjoy their forms, colors and
textures. We hope that the exhibition will broaden your understanding about
our horses and allow you to explore new dimensions of this fascination
theme.

NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR ANIMAL AGRICULTURE
The Annual Meeting of the National Institute for Animal Agriculture
(NIAA), in Sacramento April 2-5, provides a unique opportunity to learn
about the latest science, technology and industry issues for animal
agriculture professionals from California and surrounding states, as well
as, an opportunity to tour the School of Veterinary Medicine at the
University of California-Davis.
Dr. Alex Ardans, Director of the California Animal Health and Food
Safety Laboratory System (CAHFS) will provide visitors with a tour of the
lab. CAHFS provides diagnostic support to safeguard the health of
California’s livestock and poultry industries and to protect the public
health from animal disease. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
and the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory (CAHFSL)
successfully used environmental air-sampling technology to be the first
globally to detect poultry pathogens, including exotic Newcastle disease
and avian influenza virus, from naturally infected flocks. The
air-sampling method has the potential to cut the time for detecting avian
influenza from the current three to 12 days down to as little as six hours.
The tour will also include a visit to the Large Animal Clinic at the
Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital where guests will get a flavor of
the equine and livestock clinical patient care services. Finally, guests
can explore Valley Hall, the newest classroom building, wired for all
the current educational technologies, and view the research and wet
laboratory buildings under construction immediately adjacent to the
hospital.
Symposium registration is available online. You can register for the
symposium until March 21 for $195. You can also register onsite for
$225. Everyone registered for the entire Annual Meeting is admitted at no
extra charge to the symposium.
Attendees can register for the entire meeting or for specific days.
For registration and more information visit www.animalagriculture.org
<http://www.animalagriculture.org/> .
NIAA’s mission is to provide forums for building consensus and
advancing solutions for animal agriculture and to provide continuing
education and communication linkages to animal agriculture professionals.
TIME IS RUNNING OUT
Stallion Service Auction 2006-ONLY FOUR DAYS REMAIN BEFORE BIDDING
CLOSES AND THE 2006 STALLION SERVICE AUCTION BECOMES HISTORY. Open bidding
for a stallion breeding through the 2006 Stallion Service Auction
closed on March 1, 2007 with 35 stallions having received bids! Currently
only foals from these stallions conceived in 2007, and foaled in 2008 are
eligible to participate in the 2009 Breeders Sweepstakes classes. From
now until March 31, 2007 owners of STALLIONS offered in the 2006 SSA
that HAVE NOT RECEIVED A BID, as listed in the PFHA website
(www.pfha.org), may now "buy-back" a breeding to their stallion(s) for a "bid" of
$200 each stallion. This is the last opportunity to establish eligibility
for an offspring of the stallion (conceived in 2007, foaled in 2008) to
participate in the 2009 Breeders Sweepstakes. In addition to
establishing eligibility into the Breeders Sweepstakes program for the stallion's
offspring, this bid provides the stallion owner with a free entry for
one of his/her stallion's foals into the Breeders Sweepstakes class.
This $200 is a small amount to pay for the opportunity to compete for a
portion of what is expected to be a total purse in excess of $33,000
which will be paid to the top six finishers in the Breeders Sweepstakes
classes in 2009. So, stallion owners, if you offered your stallion for
breeding through the 2006 Stallion Service Auction, and your stallion has
not received a bid, now is the time to close the loop and ensure
eligibility. For a list of stallions that have, and have not received bids,
and additional information, visit the Association WEB site
(www.pfha.org) and click on "2006 Stallion Service Auction". Your bid can be called
in or mailed to the PFHA.

REGIONS AS COMMUNITIES
In our task forces's efforts to collect information that can be put
together in the form of a binder and added to a region's website if they
desire, Regions as Communities is requesting ideas, information or
articles for review that might be included. Our budget was approved to
continue this important project and we are grateful for the validation of
just how important this project is to the future of the PFHA, it's
regions and members.
This binder is currently planned in two parts. The first part is how to
create a successful region. So we are anxious to hear about things you
have found successful, things that dont work or specific problems that
you have had and maybe even resolved.
The second part is devoted to the new Paso Fino owner. Anything from
nutrition to trail riding to keeping your paso safe, choosing the right
stallion for your mare, what is the difference between pleasure and
performance, where are the trails in your region, what is trocha?; anything
that would be helpful to the new owner and ultimately help to keep them
engaged and seek us out for information. Much of this information is
regionally specific.
We already have many ideas but want to make this as thorough as
possible. If you have an article that you have torn from a magazine or
journal, please send it to me at the address below and I will contact the
author for permission to use excerpts or research and rewrite a shorter
version. This project is expected to take at least a year. After we have
assembled all of this information we will be working with the regions if
they so desire to help implement these ideas. Our committee is made up
of 5 people who are volunteers and one a liaison to the association. We
would appreciate anyone who would be interested in helping us do the
leg work. If you are interested and can donate even just an hour a week,
or have a secretary or assistant in your office whose time you could
offer, we would be most grateful. It is our ultimate goal that all of
this information is available to each and every member.
If you are sending anything via email regarding this project, please
send it to JSigridOlson@aol.com. If you are sending something snail mail
please send it to the address below.

Thank you for your assistance with this project. Sigrid Olson, Chair
